Title: Christmas Edition of Wolfenstein 3d?
Post by: magicbay on May 15, 2011, 08:32:44 am
I was just curious to know if anyone here know anything about the Wolfenstein 3d christmas edition and has mapped this christmas version yet?

Any info on this game and how to obtain the full version of it would be very helpful.

Thanks.

Is it not just a graphics swap? Or did they actually make all new levels?

I used to play the hell out of the original Wolfenstein 3D and its sequel, Spear of Destiny, but I never knew there was a holiday version of it.

*searches around the net for a while*

The only thing I've been able to find is a fan-made Christmas patch which you can find at this page: http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/graveyard/801/patches.htm (http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/graveyard/801/patches.htm). Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be any official information about such a version unlike, say, the various Holidays Lemmings versions so it probably doesn't exist.

I think it was a patch version of the game but didn't realize it wasn't a full registered version of the patched version.

Still, I'd like to know if this patched christmas version would be worth a mapping and adding to our site?    If it's not worth the effort, atleast, I'll know it's all for not.

If the Christmas version is not an official version (i.e. not involving the creators, or the owners of the franchise at the time), then I don't want to put their maps up on VGMaps.

I recently had to turn down maps for a fan-made 2D version of Doom.

The PC section would be too cluttered if I allowed for fan games and hacks.  (There are already some maps in that section that I want to research if they ought to be there.)  It's simply not worth the effort for me to have to put them all up, and because it's so easy to modify PC games, there would be a lot.  If I allow this good hack but not that not-so-good hack, what is the line of distinction?  Logistically, the easiest distinction would be to not allow any hacks/mods/fan games at all.

Be careful not to put fan games and indie games in the same basket.

Even if you do accept stuff from fan/flash, it should be in another category.  TSR lumps everything together and it just bloats the PC section.

i agree on all fronts but atleast i asked if it was possible to map it.

now i know that fan-based stuff isn't allowed here.

thanks yall for letting me know it's not possible to submit fan based stuff like the christmas edition maps here.

Ah, yes, that is true.

I would probably allow the original PC version of Cave Story if someone were to map it.  (Why haven't I played this yet?)  The game has since been ported to DSiWare and WiiWare, which certainly helps.

But I wouldn't put up hacks and mods.  I've dabbled in RPG Maker long ago myself, but while it was interesting (at least for experimenting on my own, I rarely bothered to even try others' games), I'm not opening that can of worms by hosting that sort of thing.  As I said, I should go over the PC section carefully, because I may already have stuff there that doesn't fit my criteria.

But hey, if you want to run your own map site and have maps of hacks/mods/fan games/etc., go right ahead.

Because of shareware (back in the day) and downloadable games, it's unfortunate I can't just say the game has to be a boxed game to qualify...

For the PC, boxed games are becoming a thing of the past.  I'll still buy a few with boxes, but I've really warmed up to Steam over the years.  I guess you could make the qualifier games with "commercial" releases.
