Title: 20,000 maps!
Post by: JonLeung on July 20, 2012, 11:15:10 pm
Shortly after 11:00 PM (Mountain Time) on Friday, July 20, 2012, VGMaps.com put up its 20,000th map!

TWENTY THOUSAND.  That's a lot of maps.  VGMaps now has tens of thousands of images.

Sometime this weekend I'll be able to reconfirm exactly which map it is, along with other stats about all of these wonderful maps that you guys have submitted over the last 3727 days.  If you like numbers, it might be interesting stuff...hopefully at least a bit more than the slightly lacklustre "10th Anniversary" spiel.  Stay tuned to this topic!

Thanks to everyone who has ever submitted a map to VGMaps.com!

Milestones:

20,000th map: Brave Prove (J) (https://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/PSX/index.htm#BraveProve) (PSX) - Tower Of Earth - L3 (George s)
10,000th map: SimCopter (PC) - Level 4 - River Rail (DarkWolf)
9000th map: Super Mario All-Stars (Super NES) - Super Mario Bros. - World 8 - Area 4 (Zeric)
8000th map: Bubble Bobble: Part 2 (NES) - Map (Will Mallia)
7000th map: The Little Mermaid (NES) - Stage 1 - Sea Of Coral (Will Mallia)
6000th map: ActRaiser (Super NES) - Kasandora - Act-1 (Rick Bruns)
5000th map: Lufia II: Rise Of The Sinistrals (Super NES) - Lake Cave (Rick Bruns)
4000th map: The 7th Saga (Super NES) - Kingdom Of Bilthem (KingKuros)
3000th map: Alien Syndrome (NES) - Round 6 (KingKuros)
2000th map: Aunt Arctic Adventure (Amiga) - Level 39 (Grizzly)
1000th map: Pokemon: FireRed/LeafGreen Versions (GBA) - Route 01 (Jaromaru)

Totals:

20,000 maps
6833 MB (average = 0.34 MB per map)
1275 games (approx.) (average = 15.69 maps per game)
41 platforms (average = 31.1 games per platform)
3727 days (average = 5.37 maps totalling 1.83 MB per day)

Comparing with this topic when we got 10,000 (https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/index.php?topic=771.0), not only are we getting the maps 1.5 times faster, but the maps are on average 3.8 times larger in filesize.

That's a lot of maps! I'm actually kind of surprised that PC games has the most maps, but I guess it makes sense given the number of old PC games.

The top five most popular platforms (which make up 74.13% of the maps) don't surprise me, though before checking the numbers, I too wouldn't have figured on the PC...I would have thought the Super NES would have more.  (At one point the Super NES had about 300 more maps, before Peardian combined several Super Mario RPG maps together, so it goes to show that the sheer number of maps isn't the only indication of how much content there is.)  Quickly scrolling through at a glance, there are many PC games with a lot of maps, like all thoses RTSes, so I think it just has to do with the number of maps rather than the number of games (of which there are obviously more, but I think on VGMaps.com there are more Super NES games represented).

Speaking of PC games, if I had more time last week, I would have put up Richard V. Grant's submission of seven maps from Leather Goddesses Of Phobos! 2: Gas Pump Girls Meet The Pulsating Inconvenience From Planet X (PC) maps (by the way, that likely would be the longest title), but just before I had a chance to do so, he emailed me and said he wanted me to hold off on putting them up as he had an idea to redo them.  So if I had been quicker and actually put them up and didn't take them down, then one of his Dark Seed (PC) maps would have been the 20,000th.
