Title: Peardian's custom model stuff (lots of images)
Post by: Peardian on January 19, 2013, 04:09:33 PM
So, what do I do with my free time when I'm not mapping? Well, besides loafing about and occasionally drawing or playing games, I like to mess with 3D models. I've toyed around with the idea of making my own since the beginning, but only in the past year or two have I actually made them the "proper" way. Considering almost everything I model is based on old video games that weren't in 3D to begin with, I figure I would post some of my creations here. Enjoy!

Try for a hole in one!

I made all of Course 1. Sadly, I stopped before getting to Course 2 because of all the new custom pieces 2-1 needed.

I should do more with these.

How many Sonic fans do we actually have around here?

No, that's not my house in the bg.

Messing around with "HD" stuff.

These are just some of the random one-off models I've made. But, since late 2011, I have been working on a very specific set of models. Introducing: my Brawl-style models!

Yaridovich, heavy spear-wielding fighter
Released: Dec. 23, 2011
Updated: Jan. 13, 2013
This was my first attempt at a Brawl-style model. Looking back at him, this was very evident, as he lacked a lot of detail. (Old Version (http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/4445/yaridovichteaser.png)) So, I recently updated him to the version you see here. I also made alternate colors (http://img857.imageshack.us/img857/9800/yaridovichalts.png) for him. In case you don't recognize him, he's one of the big bosses from Super Mario RPG.

Axem Rangers, tag-team speedy fighters
Released: Jun. 25, 2012
These models took me several months to put together. For all the effort I put into designing and creating them, I am rather satisfied with how they came out. (Again, in case you don't recognize them, they are bosses from SMRPG.) I put a lot of thought into how they would work as actual Brawl fighters, even going so far as to plan their Final Smash. In fact, that's what the next one is...

The Blade, sentient fortified airship
Released: Oct. 14, 2012
I spent another two months making what amounts to a background prop. Since the game doesn't really give any good view on what the Blade looks like, I took the liberty of redesigning it. The model itself is about the size of the Halberd, and has about as many polygons as Delfino Plaza. Since a single picture doesn't really do the model justice, I made a couple of Youtube Videos (http://youtu.be/YCXBWOM3MC8) to show off the details. (http://youtu.be/-c6gcXsDHAI)

Vivian, timid shadowy helper
Released: Dec. 2, 2012
I bet you thought they were all going to be from SMRPG, huh? Due to Paper Mario's flat style and cutesy proportions on everything, making a competent 3D model of her was a challenge. In case you're wondering why she looks lower-poly than the others, it's because she's only meant to be an Assist Trophy. She isn't really cut out to be a full-fledged brawler.

Bowyer, arrow-flinging monster
Released: Jan. 5, 2013
Bowyer is probably one of the most well-remembered bosses in SMRPG, partially due to how frustrating his battle was, but mostly because his battle introduces Geno. Rather than try and shoe-horn him into the position of a fighter, I decided to leave him to what he does best: pelt you with arrows (http://imageshack.us/a/img571/6062/aerobrawl.png) and disable your controls (http://imageshack.us/a/img525/8162/buttonparade.png).

Drill Bit, kamikaze minion
Released: Jan. 13, 2013
I couldn't make Aero for Bowyer and not make Yaridovich's minion, now could I? And did you ever realize just how cute this guy is? It's all there in the sprite, albeit hard to make out.

Saw a video on Youtube that someone custom made Booster's Tower on Minecraft. It was pretty nice looking and gave the layout awhole new perspective.

I looked up the video, and it definitely was impressive. And that video led me to a TF2 recreation of the tower. Seems people give Booster's Tower a lot of love!

No other comments? I'm kinda surprised.

So, what have I been doing with my time this past month or so, if not making maps? Well, I was making a map of a different sort.

This one is intended to be a Brawl stage, and is intended to act as a modernized composite of the different elements in Bowser's Keep from SMRPG. It kind of went against my mapper instincts of making it as accurate as possible, but I think it turned out better this way. I even used a few elements from Super Mario Galaxy to make it feel as modern as possible. Best of all, someone from Kitty Corp Meow Mix is helping me out by turning it into a real working Brawl stage hack.

I think these look great, Peardian! Alas, I'm one of those rare schmucks who never got around to playing Super Mario RPG, though I do plan to play through it one of these days.

I also really liked the 3D items from Super Mario Bros. 2! You should do more of those too. :D

Yeah, I enjoyed making them. I should try making more sometime.

So, why haven't I been making maps lately? Partially because I was trying to get the Bowser's Keep stage implemented as a hack (it hasn't happened yet), but the other big reason is that I was trying to finish THIS guy.

Apparently, people love Mack. Of all the SMRPG bosses I've made, this one got the biggest reaction.

I can see why. Despite knowing nothing about him, he still comes out as visually impressive and evil.

That does look awesome. I take it that's a boss in Super Mario RPG?

It should almost be mandatory for everyone to play Super Mario RPG!

It's a Mario game, from the Golden Age of video games, and it's by Square while they were at their best.  What reason could there be to not play it?

RPGs aren't really my thing--I prefer Mario as a platformer. :P

In fairness, SMRPG is on my list to get to one of these days. After all, while I don't normally like RPGs, I did give Mega Man X Command Mission a try and surprisingly ended up liking it a lot more than I thought. Perhaps the same will be true for SMRPG as well.

Oh, looks like I forgot to post this here. I finished these at the beginning of the month. Remember Cat Girl Without Salad (http://www.wayforward.com/blog/2013/4/1/get-ready-for-wayforwards-latest-epic-adventure-cat-girl-wit.html)?

Also, working on this led me to playing Mighty Switch Force! 1 and 2, which I really enjoy.

Took me almost three months to complete, but I finally made a new custom model! And this one's background is pretty relevant to this site, too.

So, see these maps? (http://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/SuperNES/DonkeyKongCountry2-Diddy'sKong-Quest-World.png) Anyone who collected the old Nintendo Power Player's Guides and got this game will know that Rare put in the original, high-resolution renders they used to create the world maps for the game. With the help of those renders, I was able to bring to life...

THE FLYING KROCK!

(http://imageshack.us/a/img594/1245/dii1.png) (http://imageshack.us/a/img703/9013/e6v3.png)
(Click for bigger pic)

And as an added bonus, I even recreated the cockpit interior, as seen in K.Rool Duel (http://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/SuperNES/DonkeyKongCountry2-Diddy'sKong-Quest-FlyingKrock-KRoolDuel.png).

Enjoy! I have more map-related projects in the work, though I'm hoping to finally kick myself into starting Majora's Mask as well.

Awesome! That was a really neat moment from arguably the best Donkey Kong game of them all. :D

Glad to see you back, Peardian--and definitely looking forward to Majora's Mask.

Impressive reconstruction! On another note, I can't believe I've never even played any of the Donkey Kong Country games all the way through.

It took me five months, but I finally finished Antasma! And don't worry, there's no spoilers here if you haven't played Dream Team yet. You fight that big scary version of him in the tutorial battle.

I haven't had a chance to seriously looking into 3D modeling programs, but I can certainly see the appeal with the rise of 3D printing.

I think I'd be happy if I could design cubes and stick them together to make larger forms, because then I would be able to, at the very least, make voxel sculptures, you know, like 3D interpretations of sprite/pixel art.

D'oh, I completely forgot about updating this thread! I've definitely made some stuff in the past half-year.

A recreation of the Butter Building stage in Kirby Fighters Z.

Orb User (and family) from Super Mario RPG
This one actually comes in three designs: classic, modern (a la Super Mario Galaxy) and Subspace Army

Super Carrot from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Blocks from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

and then the big one...

Heavy Mole from Kirby's Adventure!

Introducing... Heavy Mole DX! It's an original redesign based on the "DX" and "EX" bosses from recent Kirby games like Kirby Triple Deluxe.

Lastly, I've made turntable videos of all of my models so far (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t5CphXLBzY&list=PLnM-rtVJ9OUsReXmiwL95q0ebguEw7Hz3) AND uploaded most of them on Sketchfab so you can view them up close in full 3D (https://sketchfab.com/Peardian). :D

Finally, I can show you the model I've been working on for the past two years! This is pretty much the main reason I haven't been working on any maps.

I tried to integrate as many details from the game's area maps as I could, down to the pathways that wind between the trees and placement of the giant bee hives.

Wow, someone loves the Mario RPG and Donkey Kong Country games!

As do I, but somehow I passed on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze when it first came out, I think I was busy with something else.  Then I ended up getting it as a digital download from when Club Nintendo was ending.  I played I think the first two or three worlds and never got back into it, always distracted by other games when they came out.  I told myself I could at least play a couple stages a day but that didn't seem to work out, and every time I boot up my Wii U the icon stares back at me, as if pleading to be played, but Xenoblade Chronicles X shouts back at me louder.

And for some reason I didn't pick up Mario & Luigi: Dream Team or Paper Mario: Sticker Star.  I've been meaning to since Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is coming out very soon.  I asked for both for Christmas - not that I can't afford them money-wise, but I thought I would leave a couple not-difficult-to-understand-or-too-expensive items on my Christmas wish list (since I am notoriously hard to buy for since I USUALLY (except these instances) buy everything I want for myself within the first week of release), however I did not actually get these under the tree, and even if I did my queue is full of other games, so I probably won't get to them until my birthday in April.  Maybe I could ask for them again for my birthday?

Not enough hours in a day.  And even so, I should have put these games higher on my to-play list.  I suppose Peardian's going to think I'm silly as a Nintendo fan for not prioritizing these Mario and Donkey Kong games especially in series where I have enjoyed all other games within them and (at least in Donkey Kong's case this time,) critically acclaimed.  What's wrong with me here?
