Title: Multi play anyone?
Post by: Trop on April 02, 2013, 08:37:37 pm
I've tried this before and it didn't work but I thought I'd try it again.  Does anyone want to do a kind of multi play where we all play the same game only individually?  Kind of like a book club but with games?  I saw a bunch of Super Metroid hacks at romhacking and tried a few.  Some are pretty good and since I'm sure everyone here likes Metroid I thought we could try one of those.

Sure, it would be fun. Whichever hacks we all agree on, let's just hope they're not the kind that requires the player to have mastered the single wall jump with pixel precision because that group of people doesn't include me.

Not Cliffhanger, Pantheon, or Revolution EX then.  I was thinking Stardust or Mockingbird.

I hope you can use this Multi play as a opportunity to map the Magmoor Caverns in Metroid Prime Pinball, that is if your Multi play is compatible with NDS.

I just want to be clear that it's not the wall jump technique itself that's a problem for me. I've seen way too many hacks of games that are aimed almost squarely at those players who have completely mastered every techniques possible and in some cases, where you have to know and exploit every bug in the game's engine to progress at all.

So in short, I'd prefer a hack that's actually fun to play instead of a punishing, frustrating one. It's amazing how rare that can be.

Actually Will all the hacks I listed are SNES only.

I wish I'd saved Oxide for this Terra it was easy and fun.  The author of Stardust says it's on the easy end so I vote Metroid Stardust.  Anybody else?

Alright, Metroid Stardust.  Let's hope it doesn't suck.

Looks like you need to do mid air morphing.  You know how do to that right Terra?  Just go into morph ball the moment Samus hits her head on the ceiling.
And Ahh! the damn Chozo right off the bat! Nowhere to hide!  Oops, looks like this game might be harder then I thought.

Haven't had the time to start yet. As for the mid air morph, I'll give it a try since it's necessary to progress.

As for the hack being hard, I absolutely expected it. Seriously, extensive hack for this game are never balanced like the original but always aimed at giving more challenge. Am I weird to want a hack that's inventive and immersive yet not that much harder than the original? I feel the same way about most DLC content for games like Fallout 3 and the Mass Effect games.

Another way to do the mid air morph is to morph while still going up.  Most of the easy type hacks I've seen are just that; all the do is set the game to easy type.  I've gotten a little ways into it and... I've already fought Phantoon!  This hack is crazy!  There are power ups everywhere and most of the corridors are designed like anything but a Metroid game.  There was one spot requiring a wall kick jump but if you don't want to do it here's a jump code: 7E0B2DFF

I can't seem to find a ROM that works once patched, and I really haven't had the time to try each one to see if they would work once the intro was over. Can anyone tell me which exact ROM I need to use?

If a headerd rom won't work try a headerless.  So unlike most Metroid's this game is lots of little rooms instead of big rooms.  It reminds me of Metroid Prime 2.

You got it going Terra?  I'm stuck near a power up.  There's a missile I can't grab since it's above those blocks that break if you step on them.  Anybody know any way of breaking those blocks from below?

I'm starting right now. I've been away all afternoon and only just got back. I found the right ROM and patched it correctly *and* it works; I'm just a bit pissed since I'm pretty sure it's the same ROM I tried last night that would work. Anyway, I'll report back once I've played through it a little.

First of all, I kinda miss the simplified controls and slightly faster gameplay from the GBA games; which, I'll admit, has nothing to do with the hack but I felt I had to say it.

First impression after 2 hours? It's alright as far as hacks go, but as I suspected, it's pretty much just a whole bunch of rooms stuck together instead of a well thought out adventure where areas flow naturally from one to another. Of course, in that respect, the original Super Metroid is pretty hard to beat.

Regarding the tricks needed to complete it, turns out the mid air morph is the only technique I had mastered on my own from playing the original game. I actually didn't even remember it until the old reflexes kicked it without even thinking about it.

The Phantoon fight is pretty brutal thanks to the enclosed space, and I just found the Spring Ball after going through a few rooms without it where it would have made things much easier.

In terms of progress, I currently have 4 energy and 1 reserve tanks, 40 missiles, 10 super missiles, 25 power bombs, the grappling hook, the gravity suit and the spring ball.

*EDIT*

Is anyone encountering some isolated instances of corrupted graphics? The first room with green space pirates and those mushrooms has a layer of small black squares in the foreground, and going back to the morph ball room after a while shows a corrupted background.

Yeah the bad graphics are funny right?  So Samus parked the ship underground, makes me wonder how the inevitable running away from the exploding planet is going to go.  Isn't funny how upgrades are everywhere?  Speaking of graphics I just got past Spore Spawn and there's a cool dark room in which you can only see what's reflected in the water below you.

Just beat Mother Brain.  Escaping the planet is much harder in this one then in any hack so far, I got out with three seconds left.  Watch out for the gold Chozo it's the toughest fight in the game.

Haven't had time to continue playing today. I left yesterday after finally acquiring the Speed Boots and I'm no longer sure where I'm supposed to be going. I used them a couple of times in the obvious areas, but I feel like I now need to go back to a much earlier room and try them there.

There's a speed boost wall in the second area of Brinstar (past the wave beam lock wall) that leads to Spore Spawn.

I already beat Spore Spawn but I haven't found that black room with the reflection in the water. I'll have to double back and check everything tomorrow.

It's connected to the black and purple room just beyond his.  You bomb a spot in the floor just in front of the save room to get down to it.

Well anyway I'm sorry Stardust turned out to be a flop.  I should have picked Eris instead, I'm halfway through and it's spectacular.  There's even A Chozo dining hall.

Don't be sorry. If Eris is great, then I might give it a try too.

Eris is like an entirely new game, only problem is all the mid air morphing.  There's wall kicking too, don't feel guilty about using a jump code.

Wall jumping isn't to hard, it's just nowhere as intuitive as some other games that had it, like the first Batman game on the NES. In any case, I'm very excited at the thought of playing a hack that feels like a real game so I won't let a control issue get in my way.

On the topic of Super Metroid, if anyone wants a free Wii Virtual Console version, PM me for a code. My remaining Club Nintendo coins were expiring and it was one of the few things I could afford, but I already have it.

To bad my Wii's internet stopped working ages ago.  I'm pretty far in Eris now and it's as deep as Super Metroid.  I might have found a glitch though, the gold chozo statue that holds you as a mechanism in super metroid is here too but I can't seem to get into it's hands.  There's something important in the room too.  I've also started Mockingbird and It's nothing but individual room challenges.  But it's still interesting since the whole game takes place on a space station and not like the ones in Fusion or M.
