Title: Quo Vadis (C64)
Post by: KingKuros on May 16, 2007, 07:53:51 PM
I am now mapping this Commodore 64 game.  This is going to be a HUGE map.  It will be about 7000 pixels wide and I don't know how long it will be.  I'm doing this map in sections to be put together later.

Here's what I got so far.  These are scaled down.

Upper part:

You seem to enjoy large continuous overworld don't you KingKuros, what with this and all three Wizards And Warriors :) ?

Anyway, do you have any idea how much you've mapped so far in relation to the complete map? This looks already advanced enough but maybe you've only finished 10%, making the final result absolutely huge...

Is it really THAT large?  I'll let you know when I finally reach the bottom.  I am getting some more of the second part done.  What I do know is that there are about 5 of 6 clues or riddles placed throughout the map and I uncovered 3 of them so far.  They are:

TOURD'FORCE USING ONLY A KNIFE TO EAT AN A1 SOLUTION

BINARY INDECISIONS BETWEEN SILENT BEGINNINGS AND QUIET TERMINATIONS

A THOUSAND ADDED TO EVERYTHING LOSES FIFTY

Here is a clip of this game being played on YouTube.

Whoa, thanks for the video link. Objectively, it looks like a very boring and frustrating game to play, but I imagine that technically it was impressive when it came out. I don't imagine that there are many C64 game with free scrolling like that.

Anyway, I hope for your sake that the whole map isn't something like twice the size of what you've mapped so far. How long have you been mapping this considering how much you've done?

I got started on it last week some time.  I usually post here about what game I'm mapping on when I'm well into it.  I'll repost that second part of the map at the end of the day to show what more I got.  I'll also keep you updated on what more clues I found.

Supposedly, nobody ever answered all the riddles which were part of a contest, right?

From what I understand.

I imagine this will compress very well, if the whole game is just repeating the same tiles and colours...

I can see how anybody could get lost, even with a map.  Whoa.

I see there will only be 4 colors. Black, brown, red, and yellow.

PNGGauntlet is going to have fun with this one :)

Do you think that you could make a Metroid-style minimap for this too?

What's a Metroid-style minimap?

Something like this: http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/GBA/MetroidFusion-MainDeck(In-GameMap).png

or this: http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/SuperNES/SuperMetroid-Zebes.png

or this: http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/DS/Castlevania-PortraitOfRuin-Castle.png

or this: http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/9139/metroid2mapv2gp4.png

or this: http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/DS/Castlevania-DawnOfSorrow-Castle(In-GameMap).png

or this: http://lotlot.net/misc/supermetroid/maps/legacy/SML_ZEBES.png

Basically its just a fancy grid that labels important points.

I found another clue. It is:

LOSING THE DUTCH ONE, ROYALTY APPEARS BEFORE ME

The mapping of this game is now done and submitted to JonLeung.  I ran it through PNGGauntlet and it reduced it from 2.16 MB to 686 KB for a reduction to 31% of its original size in just over a half an  hour.

Here is the scaled down version of of the map.

http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/6963/quovadthfl9.png

The fifth and last clue near the bottom reads as:

BE SWEET AND BE QUICK TO GO BACKWARD

Next to that clue is an object to grab and take back up where the game started.

Here's what you get when you get back with the object.  One more message...

When you hit return, you'll see the title screen with the final score, like this...

That is all for QuoVadis.

That map is absolutely insane. I can't see how anyone could make their way through this with hand-drawn maps or with plain ol' memory. Good work KingKuros, you sure did take your punishment in style :)

Thanks, TerraEsperZ.

One thing I forgot to mention.  The dimensions of this map is 7008 x 9456.

Title: RE: Quo Vadis (C64)
Post by: RT 55J on May 24, 2007, 05:03:30 PM
If my calculations are correct, the game is 66 screens wide and 89 screens tall, which adds to a total of 5874 screens. That's nearly 6.5 times larger than Metroid, and this game clearly uses a larger proportion of its space.

Then again, this game repeats the same 9 screens 4 billion times, thus giving it an unfair advantage. :P

I don't know what you based your calculations on, but here's how I see it.  Each screen, not including the brown border, is 304 x 192.  The play area of the map, again not including the brown border, is 6944 x 9392  So when you divide each dimension of the map by the respective dimension of the screen, it would be about 23 screens wide and about 49 screens tall, for a total of about 1127 screens.

Actually, I mostly agree with RT 55J's measurements, but measuring in "map blocks" instead of screens. You can easily tell that the map is comprised of a small number of different segment repeated over and over all of the place. In fact, many 2D games work like this, namely the Sonic series which are often comprised of 128 x 128 or 256 x 256 blocks.

Anyway, visdually the size of the smallest segment seems to indicate a total of aroung 66 x 89 blocks, give or take a few (it's though to tell at that resolution).

I think I get what you mean here. Is that based off the scaled down version?

Yes, which is why my estimate might be wrong since details are really though to make out at that size.

TerraEsperZ Said:

If DarkWolf hadn't already done a QuackShot map, I'd also guess that KingKuros was going for the first Q-titled game map...

Do these caverns have a name?  Otherwise, I'll just call it "Map".

By the way, you should edit the Quo Vadis Wikipedia entry to include the riddles you found.  Not sure if anyone can still win that gold sceptre, though.

TOURD'FORCE USING ONLY A KNIFE TO EAT AN A1 SOLUTION

BINARY INDECISIONS BETWEEN SILENT BEGINNINGS AND QUIET TERMINATIONS

A THOUSAND ADDED TO EVERYTHING LOSES FIFTY

LOSING THE DUTCH ONE, ROYALTY APPEARS BEFORE ME

BE SWEET AND BE QUICK TO GO BACKWARD

Would be cool if someone could still win it, and especially if it was thanks to KingKuros, too.

I knew somebody just sent in the first "Q" game, but that wasn't why I mapped this game.  I don't think the caverns are called anything that I know of, so in this case, it's just "Map".  I see a few others like it too.  I didn't write the Wiki entry for this game, but if you click the discussion tab, there is a list of these clues, including the final message.

A good discussion about the riddles:
http://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37774&sid=aae082653d84f17e743148043f854afb (http://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37774&sid=aae082653d84f17e743148043f854afb)

1. AT LAST YOU THINK YOU ARE THERE
2. BE SWEET AND BE QUICK TO GO BACKWARD
3. TOURD'FORCE USING ONLY A KNIFE TO EAT AN A1 SOLUTION
4. BINARY INDECISIONS BETWEEN SILENT BEGINNINGS AND QUIET TERMINATIONS
5. LOSING THE DUTCH ONE, ROYALTY APPEARS BEFORE ME
6. A THOUSAND ADDED TO EVERYTHING LOSES FIFTY

And some of the solutions:

4. BINARY digits = "0" and "1" / BEGINNING (first letter) of SILENT = "S" / TERMINATION (last letter) of QUIET = "T"
= "S01T"
= "soit"

5. DUTCH of ONE = "EEN" / ROYALTY = "QUEEN" / ME = "I"
= "QUEEN - EEN + I"
= "qui"

6. roman numeral of A THOUSAND = "M" / EVERYTHING = "ALL" / roman numeral of FIFTY = "L"
= "M + ALL - L"
= "mal"

I didn't see solutions for how the first three are intended to be solved as "honi", "y" and "pense", but that all together becomes
Honi soit qui mal y pense
which is explained on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honi_soit_qui_mal_y_pense) as an Anglo-Norman maxim that means,
"May he be shamed who thinks badly of it".

This is the motto of The Order of the Garter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Garter).

Now I've regurgitated what was on that Lemon 64 page and no closer, but I'm curious as to how the first three are solved.

I'm behind on the thumbnails... for the past couple years all I've done are the ones for the Maps Of The Month...

But, sheesh, if I'm going to mention it in my "best 15 map sets" video...

...might as well have a specially-animated Quo Vadis one:
