Title: XX days until Super Smash Bros. Brawl! (SPOILERS!)
Post by: JonLeung on December 22, 2007, 08:40:17 am
Assuming the North American release date doesn't change from the expected Feb. 10, 2008, there are 50 (calendar) days left (or 49 days and some hours, if you want to be technical) until I'll be playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl!

I didn't put in a pre-order yet though, maybe I should.  :P

I've been Meleed out, that ironically it's the single-player adventure mode, The Subspace Emissary, that excites me the most, even more than the multi-player, though of course I do love the expanded character roster.  I guess I'm just excited to see Nintendo characters actually meeting up and fighting for some kind of purpose, as they've really only had cameos in each others' games and pointless rumbles in past Super Smash Bros. games.  And, being such a fanboy, there's also more trophies and trivia, which is exciting too!

Still, in the past year, making an effort to be more social, and the Wii being hot yet still the only one among my friends who has one (or at least with a certain group of my friends, and the only one willing to bring it along), my Nintendo games (both Wii and GameCube) are more commonly played each outing and get-together, so Brawl may be more fun than Melee simply because I'll have more opportunities to actually have full four-player matches.  (Then I might actually win sometimes, instead of being creamed by my brother constantly.  :P)

Online helps with finding more people to play, too.  I fully expect the regulars here who have a Wii to trade Friend Codes with me.

I'm going to watch a few videos again...

Here's hoping that Mega Man is in it.  I thought that he was going to be announced on the 17th, but I guess Nintendo is just going to hold out a little longer to announce that last 3rd party character.

I'm not much for all those "this character should be in it"-type discussions (mostly because someone inevitably suggests something ridiculous), but it's funny how the three non-Nintendo characters I DO think should be in it all have a name that ends with "Man"...Namco's Pac-Man, Capcom's Mega Man, and Hudson's Bomberman. (Though one "Man" is hyphenated, one is usually a separate word, and one ends a compound name...)

Those three companies have worked closely with Nintendo in the past and any of those classic characters would be more fitting than Konami's Solid Snake, who DID make the cut...

Yeah, I am not much for all of those "Lol <insert character> 4 Brawl!!!!111oneoneone" discussions either, but I would like to see Mega Man.

The characters on your list are probably the most likely candidates.  On the other hand, we could get some obscure character from a Japanese-only game...

I was shocked when Snake was announced.  Why would a character from a M-rated military game be in a Mario/Nintendo game?  He just looks out of place.

The latest update introduces "Trophy Stands", which literally are The Subspace Emissary's version of Pok? Balls.  To get trophies of the characters introduced in SSB:B's adventure mode, you have to weaken an enemy (including bosses) to low health, and then throw a Trophy Stand at them to capture it.

I love the idea!  Sounds like it would be easier with two players, though.

Those bums.  I can't access the official site from work, but from what I gather, it's been delayed until March 9.

So I guess it's 54 days until Super Smash Bros. Brawl...  >_<

My brother's gone back to school, so it doesn't make any difference to him, somehow he's going to hold out on playing this until April when his exams are done.  He was pretty insistent on not playing it during "Reading Week", and now it looks like he definitely won't.

Of all the days for me to try to find news while I'm at work...also, I was thinking of stopping by EBGames to reserve it today.  I still should, but now it's nearly two months away instead of under one month.

Japan's only getting a week delay, so the issue must be with translation/localization, since I doubt the North American version would get any exclusive features.  If I spoil myself with Internet-available Brawl info after the Japanese release, the official web site's updates are going to seem be pretty pointless...

Yep, the official site says March 9th.

What's amusing are the comments found on digg and elsewhere about this latest delay...some people really wanted it out in February.  Like the guy who had booked mid-February off from work just because of this game.  LOL.  I'm looking forward to it, but I don't think I'd go that far!

I may be jobless in February, though (due to an office move that I don't intend to follow with), so if I don't have a new job by then, maybe I really would want the game out to fill my time.  Of course, if I was jobless, I'd probably have other priorities (like finding a job) that I would be doing instead of playing games.  So I guess maybe it might be a good thing for me personally...I have enough distractions as it is.

Blah.  Anyway, there's a new video on the Japanese Nintendo site, cool...

So... according to my numerochronological skills...

Japan = 15 days

America = 53 days

Europe = 0 - 350 days

Australia = 0 - 350 days

By fluke (in a way, kind of like yesterday), I heard what today's update was.  I was talking about Zelda with a co-worker when I noticed the Wikipedia article mentioned that her Sheik transformation is in SSB:B.  Unsurprising, really.

More wondering why Captain Falcon's still mysteriously absent...

I predict that the next update will be Sheik: Special Moves.

I remember reading that Inafune (creator of Mega Man) essentially/apparently said that Mega Man wasn't in it.

I wonder how it would be if we still didn't know that Sonic and Solid Snake were in it.  Solid Snake was revealed in the very first teaser...

Sonic and Snake have to be unlocked, but they are by no means secret.  I wonder how other third-party publishers would feel if their character(s) were included but secret...it's supposed to be a selling point, after all, not hidden away.

Though honestly, what's "secret", and for how long?  In two weeks when the game comes out in Japan, next to nothing will be a surprise, characters or otherwise.  Someone's going to unlock everything in the first week and put the videos up on YouTube and we'd hear about it in any gaming forum...

I'm hoping there are around 40 characters.  I think we've only counted 23 or so (counting Zelda/Shiek and Samus/Zero Suit Samus and Wario/Warioman and Olimar/Pikmin and Bowser/Giga Bowser and the Ice Climbers together) so there are almost twice as many characters we haven't seen (though some of them are probably from a past game, like various Pok?mon and Captain Falcon and Ness, if Lucas hasn't replaced him - but there should still be some all-new surprises)...

Once again, I'm using my restricted-Internet-at-work to figure out what's new.  Sounds like there's something called "Masterpieces" - demo versions of games that the characters have starred in.

I always thought history was a good thing to have.  So many younger gamers can't appreciate a series in the same way that we old geezers (:P) do.
Title: RE: XX days until Super Smash Bros. Brawl! (SPOILERS!)
Post by: marioman on January 25, 2008, 04:28:48 pm
Yeah, but a demo?  I see that as a little cheap.  The least they could do is offer a discount on the VC game to people who have SSBB.  (Or maybe to people who beat the demo, complete some SSBB challenge, etc.)

It is good to see that Nintendo is still remembering their roots.  Some companies (read Sega) have seemingly forgotten what made them popular and are failing miserably.
Title: RE: XX days until Super Smash Bros. Brawl! (SPOILERS!)
Post by: JonLeung on January 26, 2008, 11:53:18 am
I finally got around to pre-ordering it today.  They say it'll likely be a day later in Canada, so I may not get it until Mar. 10...  MAR10, how appropriate.

While I always thought it would be cool to have discounts on VC games for having/playing certain Wii games, that gets a little hairy when you consider that anyone could pass around save files for games and/or the Wii games themselves and then everyone would get a VC game for less.  At best they'd probably include a Wii Points Card (likely less than the usual 2000 Points cards, I'm sure) with a game.

I don't see Nintendo doing that, though.  But VC demos are a good idea, and if not in the Wii Menu itself, at least it's with a game that is likely to be a top-seller and somewhat appropriate given the history behind the characters in the game.  Would be nice if more demos became available if you had your Wii online as more VC games come out.

It's been said that this may be the opening.

I like it, but for some reason I kind of hope it isn't the final version of the opening - I liked Melee's opening much better.  I wouldn't be surprised if there was another opening and it included several of the shots in this montage.  Maybe the video's music timing is off or something.

I saw a site yesterday with a bunch of videos...if i find it again I'll let you know.  Though I think it had the ending but not the boss fight, now that I think about it.  So you probably saw that too.

I've seen enough of the game for myself at this point (as have anyone else who's been through this topic), that I'm not going to check out the ending or the boss fight.  No sense outright ruining it.

I thought it was neat that the story is written by the guy who wrote the Final Fantasy games from VII onwards (except for IX and XI), as well as the spinoffs (VII: Advent Children, Crisis Core: VII, X-2, etc.) and the Kingdom Hearts games.  (I like Final Fantasy VI and IX though, but you can't deny that counts for something.)  That would explain the epicness of it, and would have to turn some Square-Enix fanboys' heads.

Oh, and the link to the soundtrack torrent is here:

http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=141013

Absolutely epic!  Though they kind of use the Super Smash Bros. Brawl theme song a bit too much.  Most of the new songs I've heard so far seem like remixes of the same themes we've heard in the trailers...

Apparently The Subspace Emissary is lengthier than expected.  Some people are saying it's about as long as many other standalone games.  One review said ten hours.  Wow!

I'd normally detest most games less than 20 hours long but considering that's only part of the game, even five hours would be incredible, IMO.

10 days left (in Canada, assuming it is a day later, which could still just be an assumption).

I'm sure my mom will pick it up for me during the day (go parents!) but that Monday will be a tough day of work to get through.  Maybe all week.  If only it'd come out before a weekend instead of after.  At least there's the Easter long weekend coming up soon after that...

Last night I heard of some program (BIN2JPG or something) that lets you export the pictures from the game.  More accurately, you save screenshots within the game to your SD card, transfer the files to a PC, and that program can export them out of your save data and into a JPEG.  Nifty!

Supposedly it's here: http://www.mediafire.com/?glz2jdgz2l5

An EBGames guy called my house saying that they expect the game to come out on the 9th, not the 10th.  So if that's the case, then it's only 5 days!  :D

1 day difference is a big deal 'cause I'd rather start playing the game on a Sunday than a Monday.  I have things on my plate that I have to do but I bet I can get through all of SSE on that Sunday.  I can't play multiplayer with my brother until he's done exams (he has such willpower!) and I'm not going to go online until I actually master using somebody...

Yes... it is 5. However, when I posted "6 days for you lot" at the time, I was aware that it was March 9th, and it was March 3rd when I posted that and erm... 3+6 = 9 <_< not 10 >_>

I was told the 10th earlier by the EB Games.  Canada's gotten games a day later on occasion, so I wasn't surprised.  That's what I meant, being surprised that it matched the American date.

Anyway, I'm not much of a GAFfer, but this thread is incredible...the possible screenshots are awesome, especially with that image extracting program...

Three days!  :D

IGN gave the game a 9.5.  They didn't like the load times (20 seconds to start up?) and the repetition in SSE.  They would've liked leaderboards and the ability to know who you're playing against online when randomized, but acknowledged that it didn't take away from the game and were surprised that onlineness was as fleshed out as it was, or something.

I got the game late yesterday (4:00 PM! >_<) but managed to get 68% in Subspace Emissary...I believe I'm on the last stage which is a big chunk of the game because of how it's designed...(they increased the length of the game very easily because of how the "plot" worked out) so basically I'm done with most of the actual story, other than the end.  They were right about some repetition in SSE...it's really all about the cut scenes.  I was hoping to finish it last night, but when I knew I couldn't, I still wanted to get as far as I could, yet I felt more than ready to put down the controller when it got to this last stage...I was going to play SSE with my friends but I think I'll just play the cut scenes and they'll get the gist of it...

My brother swore off video games until he's done school this semester, but being an SSB fan he had to at least play one match.  Not wanting to see the character select screen or the stage select screen (I'd already unlocked some things he might consider spoilers), I had to select for him, so we jumped into a basic one-on-one Brawl on Battlefield, with him being Samus and me being Link (our "mains").  I shouldn't've set it to only one minute as he smashed me off once and I might have been able to get him too if time hadn't run out.  :P  But he always was better than me...

I didn't go online, other than to use Spectator mode to watch a fight between King Dedede and Sonic.  I should've bet on the guy playing Sonic - whoever had already unlocked him so quickly would most likely have some skill already - but I bet on King Dedede and lost a measley 17 Coins.

I was looking for the daily custom stage and couldn't find it, according to the GameFAQs boards, it sounds like they're not coming out yet...

I guess this topic does have a SPOILER warning, so if anyone's as far as I am in The Subspace Emissary...I have a question.  I can't reach GameFAQs at work though last I checked there wasn't a good FAQ yet...

I'm near the end (well, let me rephrase that...near the end of any real plot development), working my way through the maze created by the areas that were taken by the Subspace bombs earlier.  Looking at my character roster, other than the secret characters I can't get yet, I notice I don't have Ike.

When I was playing the previous stage (or was it a couple?), collecting the trophies of the fallen characters, did I miss Ike?  Can I just replay a stage to find him, and where is he?

I notcied I can access the WikiCheats site from work but the SSE FAQ isn't done yet, either...>_<

Did you get both Zelda and Link?  They're both necessary to get Ganondorf.  I thought that was a neat scene, when they agreed to unlock him out of trophy stasis.

I wonder how that would work if I hadn't done that the first time around.  I guess the stage would have to be cleared again...

Yes, I did. I have all the characters and stages unlocked in multiplayer now, too.
Title: RE: XX days until Super Smash Bros. Brawl! (SPOILERS!)
Post by: JonLeung on March 12, 2008, 07:07:16 am
I have to get back to the other thing I'm doing, so I'm probably not going to play it much in the next little while, but I did finish SSE (on Easy :P) and unlocked all the characters.  Other than that one match I mentioned, I still haven't actually played multiplayer so I still have stages to look forward to unlocking, or even seeing!

I noticed the download-new-content service is up.  I might at least look at what's new each day.  Last night, I got a replay of Pikachu breaking the targets in 12 seconds, a Japanese-named custom stage with MGS4 music, and a screenshot of...I don't know what that is...a seed?  An egg?  o_0

Stupid thing is I found that save files can't be copied to an SD card.  Content like screenshots and I think maybe replays, but not SSE saves.  Or trophies or stickers.  Or what's been unlocked and what's not.

Since my brother wants to unlock stuff (and actually play it, after exams), I had planned to back up my save, and he could play a bit and unlock stuff (but just a few things) in multiplayer, but once he wanted to play SSE, I could copy my save back, so he could still be surprised at who's in the game without me losing my save.  But now it looks like I might have to delete it for him to be able to do that, a month and a half from now!  Almost a good thing I might not have time to play more...

Though I notice you can delete particular data.  I don't remember seeing an option for deleting new characters or stages so that they could be unlocked again.  I'd hate to delete my SSE save just to see that the characters I unlocked through there are still there, though I believe that is the case.  But if I choose "Delete All", then I might lose screenshots or replays - though I suppose I could back them up on an SD card...

Grrr.  I think he did say it'd be okay if I left it as it is, but it seems kind of mean to deny the pleasure of unlocking stuff to someone who successfully managed to avoid spoilers all this time...  >_<

Though if he could live without the "You unlocked..." screens and the "NEW" on characters and stages, if he played and finished SSE before taking on any multiplayer, I guess he wouldn't actually be missing much 'cause he would be fulfilling the unlocking conditions anyway.  Besides, there are still Events, Challenges, Multi-Man Brawls, Home-Run Contests, Targets, All-Star mode on various difficulties...he does have plenty to do yet.  And even if I did lose my save, we'd eventually unlock everything anyway, and life goes on.  :P

This inconvenience could have been more easily handled if Nintendo would let us copy the save.  This also means that at tournaments, someone's going to have to unlock everything on every Wii involved.  Even with that speed-unlocking method, that could still take a while if there are many Wiis.  0_0

One more tidbit (or two or three) about the Subspace Emissary, before I end this wall of text - it would've been nice if Sonic's appearance made more sense, if we knew what the story was behind the final boss, and the end could've had more to it, that's for sure.
