I probably can't access that from work.  What's it all about?  Is it for real?

If only I'd put up those Mega Man('s) Soccer maps earlier this week, then I could honestly say that I believed we had all the Mega Man maps!

Interesting...  It looks real enough, but the multiplatform thing makes me think that it will be a download.  Hopefully Capcom is learning their lesson and they will start making real Mega Man games instead of lame Pokeclones.

Minus Mega Man III PC.  I wish that Frenkel would respond to my PMs.

Try emailing Frenkel.  He's not a regular, so he won't see the PM if he never comes back.

Sure he submitted the maps for Mega Man (PC version).  If I recall, he asked someone else - anyone else - to add in the Robot Masters as he didn't get around to it or didn't care enough to.  So just 'cause he mapped Mega Man for the PC doesn't mean he'd want to map Mega Man III for the PC.

Maybe someone else will have to scour some abandonware sites for Mega Man III, load up some DOSBox, and map it, rather than hope for Frenkel to do so.

The nice thing about Frenkel's maps are that they are a complete graphic dump.  (Which means that they even include areas that are typically off of the screen.)  Maps like that would be nice, but I guess traditionally ripped maps would be OK.

Secondly, what is teh video of? I can't view videos, so I don't know.

I think the best evidence that people have a life outside this forum is that the weekends are often very quiet, so there's that explanation at least.

As for the video, it's a humorous live movie about Dr Wily being brought to realize that bad decisions by him and his staff are not only making him broke, but also unwillingly allowing Mega Man to keep kicking his ass. Realizing his designers are all idiots, he decides to do it all himself. Followed by shots from "Mega Man: Wily Does It Himself" with pictures and reviewers comments ("Unenjoyably difficult", "This game is literally impossible", "You can't not die" and "Sorry - Capcom"). Anyway, it's funnier than it seems from the description.

So IGN'a gotten wind of it too, and if they submitted it to the Australian game evaluation board, like Rew said, it's either some ridiculously elaborate hoax, or we got something legit on our hands.

As for linking, you have the buy the appropriate thing in the gold store on the forum to get the link ability. Or Jon could be awesome and allow some people to do it (not saying anything against you Jon in the least, but it does get a bit annoying), but otherwise it's the only way I know of.

If only basic tags worked... :P

Just about everything on Metroid - they merged about 50 pages of good information into 1 page.  There were many Mega Man-related pages that were removed.  They also removed the page for The Legend of Zelda: Mystical Seed of Courage and merged the OoA and OoS pages into a poorly written catch-all page.  Not to mention that they rejected the VGMaps page many times.

Oh Wikipedia... and it's reasons like that that for such information you go and find topic specific wikis. Personally, I find the original wikipedia useless for most information, unless you're only looking for just the most base information.

Title: RE: Mega Man 9 Confirmed!?

It's crossed my mind.  Although I would think that there would be a LOT of paperwork and such that would have to be filled out in order to get the game rated.  Therefore, the chances of a mistake would be extremely low.

It is interesting.  I assume that the scans are legit then?  The only thing that makes me uneasy is Splash Woman.  What, now Mega Man is encouraging violence against women?  All we can hope is that Splash Woman falls in the same category as NP's report about Zero being Mega Man X's canine sidekick.

Looks hot.  I mean that.  And that's with or without "Splash Wo" Man!

(Now where are the other Mega Man games on the VC?  >_<)

That screenshot where he's rotating around that thing makes me wonder if this will look NES-like but occasionally have neato 3D effects.  Though I wouldn't want it to be entirely "Paper Mega Man" (a la Paper Mario, of course) as it should still be mostly grounded in classic 2D gameplay, which I do think they're trying to achieve.

They could still do something unNES-like but subtle (or optional) like giving the Robot Masters voices - that's what I liked about Mega Man 8, and it'd be the easiest way to make clear that Splash Woman is a female robot, as if the "Wo" isn't obvious.

They could also have an orchestrated soundtrack...but I for one wouldn't mind another oldschool NES sound chip soundtrack!  (Especially if they got the same composer for Mega Man II and III...)  They will probably have a soundtrack that would fit the visuals anyway.

Well, I can't say I'm not disappointed by this, even though I understand the financial imperative behind the decision. While I vastly prefered the gameplay of the NES games, I grew quite attached to the art direction in Mega Man 8 and Mega Man and Forte.

I just hope that these screenshots are far from final, because so far this looks a bit empty, not to mention ugly tiles and colour choices. I would at least expect something as pretty as Mega Man IV or V, instead of the worst from Mega Man VI which is what this reminds me of. Not to mention that many tiles and sprites here look like they are either reuses or mods from existing art.

I just hope they at least spice up the old formula, like having an introduction stage and including Bass. I would have liked a bit more plot than the usual "Someone other than Wily is to blame but it's really him in the end" but it seems that despite all appearances, I'm not among the intended crowd for this :(.

The Wii is hardly a "passive" console, quite the opposite, and games like Super Mario Galaxy aren't going to play themselves...  >_>  Not to mention that you could get a Wii and only get so-called "REAL" games via the Virtual Console and, case in point, WiiWare.

Though both supporting and denying your points, I don't see that PC games are any different, especially compared to the other two...

But I digress...

Introduction stage?  Booooooooo!  I want to jump right in and have all my choices at the beginning.  MegaRockMan shouldn't be like other games that always start out the same way.

My best guess for the reasoning on this is "Well no matter what we do, they'll always complain it's not like the old games, so let's just make it look like the old games."

That's sort of ironic, considering how many iterations he has been through.

Also, it looks like they stole the bubble jumping puzzle from Wave Man's stage. Lazy Capcom. :P

A bit more impressed, but still not all that convinced by the level graphics. What little we've seen still feels a bit empty and generic, and that bubble puzzle lifted straight from Wave Man isn't too impressive.

I'll reiterate that I still hope they go beyond the classic Mega Man formula with some extras like a bit more story (why not a cut scene here and there aside from the intro and the ending), an intro stage, an option to play as Proto Man or Roll, etc. It's not like they can't do it because of storage space reason.

Frankly, the only two things that really teased my interest in that trailer was the music (seemed superior to Mega Man VI, which is already something) and seeing Roll flying on Rush Jet and seemingly having the time of her life (a nice little touch).

I feel exactly the opposite.  It is hard to mess with perfection.  MM7 and MM8 were quirky in some places.  (MM&B was a little better.)  It is nice to see that Capcom is moving back towards a formula that is tried and true.

They better include sliding and the Mega Buster in the final version though. Or maybe they'll make you buy it with bolts instead, which is something I find really irritating (having to buy an ability that should be there by default and has been, in the past).

That would be cool if they were Doc Robots.  Remember those?  In Mega Man III, with the Mega Man II Robot Masters "returning" in them?  It would be so cool if there were eight, each with the combined data of all the Robot Masters of one of the previous games.  o_0  Or at least one from each.  I guess you'd have to exclude Mega Man & Bass, though you could at least have Tengu or Astro since they were in that as well as 8...

Of course, that's a geek dream, it's probably not going to be that way.  It would be nice if the game wasn't as short as the classic games, as you could probably beat most Mega Man games in one sitting.

I like how marioman, Rew, and RT 55J have Mega Man-related avatars, as easily seen in this topic.  (And Zeric has that dog from Okami, a Capcom game.)

Title: RE: Mega Man 9 Confirmed!?
Post by: TerraEsperZ on July 18, 2008, 08:38:29 pm
I think it's too bad that Capcom are focusing almost solely on nostalgia in making this game. Since they're using MM2 as the game to live up to, they're ditching the mega buster and the slide, and apparently going back to a single 5 stages fortress. Oh yeah, and the story is really pathetic (even more childish than all the other ones; not only do people believe Light responsible, but Wily is a free man despite all he's done and people trust him!?).

I guess it was inevitable that, after so long, my idea of a great MM9 wouldn't measure up to the real thing, but I still wished they had gone full out and made this *the* definite 8-bit Megaman game.

I would have liked a more believable plot (not necessarily a dark one, but at least consistent with those that came before), the mega buster and the slide (non-negotiable), an intro level, having a plot twist occur after beating four robot masters (maybe retain being able to access all eight from the start though), have some hidden secrets and playable characters, and better graphics (they're not bad right now, but it looks a bit dull right now, which is too bad after the bright and vibrant stages in MM5 with color cycling and all). In short, I *liked* some of the changes they made over the years, and I'm sad to see them go just because *old school is better* according to some.

Asking for much? I know I am, and make no mistake, I'll still be buying this game, if only because disappointing but adequate classic Megaman is better than no classic Megaman at all. Maybe I'll be presently surprised and there'll be ton of neat stuff nobody was expecting, but I prefer to have no expectations at all so I won't be let down in case they fail to materialize.

And before some of you reply and state how some of the things I want are *bad* or *stupid*, well I'm just stating my opinion. It's the best way I can find to vent my disappointment (heck, I even loved the 32 bit graphic style from MM8 and MM&B and would have loved more).

Yeah, someone posted about that a few days ago on another board. I love the music and the 8-bit sprites for the Robot Masters, but part of me wishes someone had the skills to recreate Megaman 7 or 8 as closely as possible using a real NES ROM, if only to see how much would technically be feasible.

At first, I thought it might have been a hack, but I quickly realized that some stages probably had more tiles than the NES could hold in memory at once, not to mention some overly huge sprites that the NES obviously can't support like the robo-ostrich in Slash Man's level and the Pumpkin in Shade Man's. I've been wondering how a talented programmer would go about to try and replicate those effects on a NES (huge sprites are usually the actual background of the stage, with some fancy playing around with the scanlines to move it separately from the ground giving the illusion of movement).

Anyway, enough ranting from me already :)

Oh yeah, and I heard rumors that a similar project for Megaman 8 was in the works, but I don't know if it's true. I hope so :) I want to see how the heck they would manage Frost Man given how huge he is.

Here's the page for the MM8 project. It doesn't look like they are very far along. This page has some of the boss characters, and it looks like they shrunk Frost Man down to a quarter of his size.

Also, I wonder if anybody knows enough moonspeak to inform them of Zeric's maps.

On Rockman 7: I kinda miss the clown boss, but I'm glad they made all 8 regular levels available from the start and cut that awful intro stage with the long, unskippable dialogue and two boring mini-bosses.  The shop system wouldn't have been impossible to include, considering it originated in the Game Boy series, but now I think I like just searching for the upgrades more, rather than having to keep track of prices and what's available when.  It's still fun to watch my brother get outraged when he falls for the game's many traps.  He doesn't seem to like being punished for lack of practice...

Hey folks. I watched that funny wily vid. It wont be long and all the mega man monster and game ideas will be hard to come by. I mean there are a lot of MM bosses and different levels in all the games. Someone will run out of ideas. I like Mega Man since MM1 as I played it like the second week it was out.

But on Topic; I assume the MM9 WiiWare released game is official. I read about it in my last months Nintendo Power Mag. I'll be looking forward to it. First though I thought about maybe relaxing (well, if it's possible with MM games) and playing a few old school classic MM's to get me back in the feel. I haven't played MM5 or 6 in a long time.

Also that MM7 game in Japanese is cool. Can't read the words but hey,it's nice.

Good news! Inty is releasing both the original soundtrack and an arranged soundtrack for Mega Man 9! Although the arranged one isn't out until October 10th, the original soundtrack is coming out today September 12th (but in Japan only sadly).

Enjoy a review of the original soundtrack, and tell me that doesn't tempt you...

Yeah, the soundtrack is out and half of it is on YouTube.  The music sounds really good.

Also, what do you make ofthis?  It is coming out for the PC?  *Hopes that it is true*

Is Europe not getting it on the Wii?

Even if a PC version is available, I'm likely to get the Wii version.  (On the other hand, my brother and I decided to get Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People on the PC instead of the Wii...I should probably play some of that...)

At least a PC version opens up the possibility of it being mapped.  :)

TerraEsperZ Said:

Actually, MegaMan's weapon was supposed to have been called the Mega Buster all along.  It was in Mega Man 4 that he gained the New Mega Buster which had the charge-up ability that you're thinking of.

Oh come on Ryan, everyone knows what "Mega Buster" usually refers to, you're just arguing for the heck of it :P

Anyway, at least the soundtrack is really, really good, despite them re-using a few old tunes without any change (even Mega Man 4 slightly altered the Stage Selected tune).

I heard part of the soundtrack on a YouTube video earlier this week, and I thought the Robot Master music wasn't that great.  That's just me though.  I would've preferred something more upbeat.  And not with a long build-up, either, since most boss fights are quick if you know which weapon to use...

Though sometimes I wonder if I just like Mega Man II and Mega Man III music (and the other parts of those two games, I suppose) simply because they're the games I replayed the most, and associate simpler childhood times with them, rather than appreciating any skill of the composer(s)...maybe?

'Cause I recall that there have been other good Mega Man music tracks except that I can't actually recall the tune.  I think I just like Tornado Man's theme because it was used in the trailer and evokes memories of that exciting reveal...

They may be from the ROM hacks that are floating around the 'Net.  Not that it would make them any less official I guess - the level design and graphics are the same.

I red the topic about MM9 in your forum, but unfornately I have an invalid mail to subscribe myself....

so i thought to answer some questions about my maps... :-P

to create them, first of all I used the existing screenshots of the game, so I could recreate the 16x16 pieces that compose the stage, pixel by pixel..yes, it tooks me much time, but it was funny! :P

Then, watching the videos of two complete gameplay (they're from the E3 of Los Angeles), I made the maps, using copy/paste for the single pieces... ...boring? :P

I hope you like them.....bye bye!!

Ciao! Tengu

And I finally did look at them.  They're really good, especially considering the method used.  Maybe I'll try for a mid-week update after all...

I guess I'll have to create a Wii page.  Or WiiWare?  Hmmm.  Though it's available for the PC in Europe, supposedly, as well as XBLA and PSN, since everyone seems to be looking forward to the WiiWare version and Capcom supposedly said that the WiiWare version is the definitive version, I suppose the Wii section is where it'll go.  :D

Well, I have it and it seems pretty awesome. I've only had about 25 minutes' play time, but I've already taken down Galaxy Man. It has enough added to the original formula that it might even make TerraEsperZ happy.

The soundtrack was great enough that I went out and bought a wireless router for the express purpose of buying and playing Mega Man 9.

As for making me happy, well that remains to be seen; I intend to be without mercy in my evaluation of it. I've bitched to much about it so far to back out now and risk losing face >:(

:D Nah, just kidding. I've made my peace with this game not being the one I've been dreaming of for years, but that's the case whenever a sequel takes too long to materialize. It looks very challenging, which is what Inty was going for.

I just hope it does well enough for more to be made, which might incorporate features from more recent games like Bass and (slightly) more serious plots. Or go the Mega Man Powered Up route, and allow playing as the Robot Masters (it would have been great for this game, since they're all Light creations).

Same with Revned, I haven't put in much time, and beat Galaxy Man in the little time I did.  I lost all but one of my lives on spikes (silly, really), then faced off against Galaxy Man.  When I got Game Over at him, I just started a new game and the stage is a breeze once you've played it once and know what to watch out for.

I saw the map we have up here of Plug Man's stage, so I'm concerned about those disappearing blocks...  >_<

Is Galaxy Man the one you're supposed to start with? I'm playing it the old-fashioned way and finding out the order on my own. Neither Concrete Man nor Tornado Man is weak to the Jewel Satellite :-(

I didn't find the disappearing blocks too difficult, but I accidentally hit a spike on my last life.

So far, I found Galaxy Man to be the easiest stage/boss combination to beat, followed by Splash Woman and then Tornado Man.

Man this game is hard. Or I've gotten too used to using savestates when playing. Either way, I've beaten five robot masters so far with six or seven game overs so far.

I can't remember the last time more than a couple of us were playing the same game at about the same time, it's kinda neat.  :P

I don't think the game is that much harder than a typical classic Mega Man game, but then again having only played Galaxy Man's stage and you saying it's the easiest, maybe I'm speaking too soon.

Now, from what I heard about the "achievements"...yeah, those'll be hard.  I'll get my butt kicked trying to do those if the main game doesn't.  Like finishing a stage (or was it the whole game? o_0) without ever missing a shot?  So much for being trigger-happy.
Title: RE: Mega Man 9 Confirmed!?
Post by: Revned on September 23, 2008, 01:05:33 pm
I finished all 8 robot masters this morning. There are tough spots, but it's about the same as the old games in terms of difficulty.

You actually have to beat the entire game without missing. There are also crazy ones like "beat the game once a day for three days" and "beat the game with one pixel of health left". I've gotten a few, but nothing too impressive. Best one was "reach the boss room without stopping".
Title: RE: Mega Man 9 Confirmed!?
Post by: TerraEsperZ on September 23, 2008, 03:11:48 pm
By hard, I'm thinking the stages themselves. I don't think I've ever had so much difficulty in any of the first six games. And I've never, *never* needed two continues to even reach a boss before. But the missing abilities like sliding and charge shot do contribute to the increased difficulty. For example, the falling boulders at the mini-boss in Jewel Man would be a lot easier to avoid by sliding.

But honestly, I think it's mostly because they *wanted* to make more difficult levels, which is nice. There are a lot more spikes, more bottomless pits and more tricky obstacles than before. And you can't keep moving forward without thinking like in the old games, because here it gets you killed fast.

Frankly, there are only two stages of old I found harder than those in this game: Heat Man for the disappearing bricks (even worse than Plug Man's) and Ice Man for those buggy platforms that would hurt you (and then let you fall to your doom) if you happened to land on them while they were firing. Of course I'm not including fortress stages here, because some of those have managed to be really tough, but I expect MM9 to kick my ass in that department too.

LOL, I mastered the Plug Man disappearing blocks and did the last five times in a row without messing up.  Of course it took me more tries than that to get it right.

I was up against Plug Man on my second last life (I got tired of getting more lives from the infinitely spawning robots, and only just got the 1-Up a couple rooms before the boss) and used up all my Jewel Satellites before he killed me.  Then on my last life, I tried again, even with no Jewel Satellites, but I used an Energy Tank and thought I had it for sure.  But Plug Man did his stupid hop that just misses my rapid buster shots, and then he killed me when he only had one sliver of health left!  %^@#!

Then I went back home, bought three Energy Tanks (I could've bought more, what with all the Screws I accumulated when I was hunting for 1-Ups) and tackled the stage again, getting past the disappearing blocks for the fifth time and beat it on my first life this time around.  :P

It's not too frustratingly hard.  The challenge level is pretty good as it is, hopefully it doesn't get too bad but I'm still early on.  >_>

Well, I wasn't factoring in the GB games since I haven't played them nearly as much as the NES ones. I'll take your word for it :)

A nice thing is how useful the weapons are in stages compared to some games where you only use them to beat the bosses and that's it.

Jewel Satellite makes Plug Man's stage incredibly easier by virtue of it being able to kill an infinite amount of enemies with a single use.

Hornet Chaser is both a Ring Shot and a sort of Spark Chaser rolled up in one and allows easy collection of those items placed near spikes/death traps.

And from what I've seen of the first stage of Wily's Fortress, looks like the Tornado Blow is integral in getting through.

Let me state again how happy I am that they integrated many puzzle elements in the stages this time around.

There are even more puzzles that require specific weapons later in the castle. It's quite a fun few levels.

It took me three full tries to finish Wily's Castle (omg spoiler). The first time I accidentally hit "Stage Select" instead of "Continue", and the second time I got stuck with no energy tanks on Wily. So, I begrudgingly left and bought a bunch of items, then breezed back through the castle only dying twice. I ended up using 2 tanks.

I really enjoyed the game as a whole. The level design and graphics were great. It's a worthy addition to the original series. Now to figure out how to map this...

I beat the rest of the Robot Masters today, I don't know if I'm getting better or if the stages got easier or what.  Magma Man's was a breeze, and Splash Woman's and Hornet Man's were easy too...

I made it to Wily's today but I'm going to bed now, and I'll probably have dreams of how I'm supposed to get past those magma/laser beams.

I know I can use Jewel Satellite to max out my weapons' ammo at those constantly spawning guys, then use Rush Coil to get past the single magma/laser.  Then I use Rush Coil as soon as I get up the ladder to the next screen to just be able to make it to the left ladder.  Then I can use the Concrete Shot to create a block to get to the next screen and use Laser Trident to get an E-Tank.  I go back down and now I'm wondering how to get to the next ladders over, since dropping down to a Rush Coil doesn't work since the center platform is too low.  What did I not try?

But from the sounds of it I should leave and stock up on lives and E-Tanks anyway before I continue on...

What did I not try?
Fire a Concrete Shot at the upper magma beam while hanging from the left ladder, which will petrify it long enough to walk on it to the right-most ladder :)

Thanks for the tip, Terra!  Yeah, I'll definitely stock up.

The one thing that makes at least the main eight stages easier is being able to buy E-Tanks and lives in between stages.  After getting the Jewel Satellite, and thanks to TerraEsperZ mentioning its infinite usage, there were a couple places I found I could exploit it to gain Screws (and lives) easily without touching the controller.  Infinite loops FTW!  This will hurt my chances of finishing the game fast enough to get at least that one achievement, though.

In Plug Man's stage, after the disappearing blocks and towards the end of that room are two pipes facing right that continuously spawn those little round robots.  By using the Jewel Satellite when standing at the bottom beneath the pipes' openings, the enemies just keep flowing downward to their down and you can reap their items.  (If you take a step to the left to bring the left pipe in view, it's not as effective because the left pipe is farther, and the angle they come in make the items they drop get stuck at the pipe.)

In Hornet Man's stage, there are some robots that resemble potted plants that continuously shoot plant missiles at you.  I stood to the right of a group of (at least) three of them near the end of the stage and found that with the Jewel Satellite on, two of them will shoot missiles that home in such a way that they are eliminated directly above Mega Man so he can once again build up items easily.  (I found that if I shifted to the left, ie. right up against the short wall/ledge/step, the third one over will also shoot missiles, but then you can't get its items because they end up on that very ledge, and you also miss out on the items from the closest robot pot.  So it's best to go for two.)

There are probably other places this can be done, but those are the two I came across.  Hopefully I can find one near the beginning of a stage that are at least as fast, but then again I'm probably not going to get a good time anyway...and it doesn't take that long to get through the stages, and I shouldn't need to do this too many more times at this point...  I will have to revisit those areas to max out on Screws before tackling Wily's fortress.

Whew!  I just finished the game!  On my first serious run through Dr. Wily's, but it was pretty close.

I lost several lives on the stupid anti-grav room that ends with spikes.  I used E-Tanks a lot, including two AND the M-Tank while fitting that Yellow/Green Devil Blob boss.  I just used my last E-Tank as the last phase of Dr. Wily began, so it was neck-and-neck 'til the end but I beat him.  Hooray for shotgunning Magma!  :D

I like how you briefly see at the end why Mega Man & Bass does indeed "count".  Yet for some reason they keep saying that this follows the events of Mega Man 8...whatever.

I don't know if I'll replay it...if I do it won't be anytime soon, I have enough to do...but I only got 20% of the "achievements", so perhaps I should.
Title: RE: Mega Man 9 Confirmed!?

I had to go through the castle three times. The first time I gave up on the double-devil boss, and the second time I used all of my E-Tanks on the same boss. The third time I managed to beat Wily with over 4 E-Tanks left. I guess it just goes to show that memorization is key in Mega Man games. :P

Overall, this is definitely a top-tier Mega Man game in my book. The level design, music, and weapon balance are all superb. In fact, I'm almost willing to say that this is better that 2, 5, 5GB, and Bass (my previous favorites).

Also, I wouldn't mind if somebody "upgraded" 3-6 to have cutscenes like this game. Sure, they each had one cutscene, but all they did was introduce the second fortress.

I also noticed the same thing about MM&B in the ending. It's too bad that they didn't show any of the GB games. :( I really like them.
