GitHub Pages is a nice choice for something like this

I wasn't trying to imply that you're stupid, apologies. It's just that ImageMagick is pretty difficult to work with. I spend most of my day in the command line, yet whenever I want to do something nontrivial with ImageMagick it takes me a long time to figure it out. It's basically a micro-programming language

ImageMagick can run on Windows either natively or via Cygwin. It's command line-only, though, which might be a dealbreaker for Jon

Yes, looks like it's working on all the HTML pages. Seems snappier to me!

Looks like you need to paste a configuration line into a .htaccess file at the top level directory:

Well, it's not really the right place to host images, but I estimated my usage beforehand and decided to go with it anyway so that I could get revision history (mostly for my own amusement). Imgur is the best option I'm aware of for no-strings-attached image hosting with embedding.

Other than that, they do provide a pretty nice platform for hosting static sites if you're not afraid to get your hands dirty. See https://pages.github.com/

Oh I know. If you configure your git workspace to not do delta calculation for binary files, it's plenty fast for my content. I only have ~250MB of stuff.

Shameless plug: I now have a personal site collecting my maps at git.io/revned

I've been meaning to do this for years. I'm no designer and I've been staring at it too long to even tell whether it looks good, but at least it's fast and hopefully usable. It's not super scalable, but good enough for my modest portfolio. Criticism welcome.

I reconstructed my map history as a git repo, which was an interesting process and lets me do some cool things like automatically generate the update history on the main page and the timestamps on each map.

There are a handful of maps which aren't on VGMaps: the manually modified Saturn SotN maps, some older ones which have been replaced, and also a Link's Awakening DX world map which I created but never submitted as I was mapping the dungeons.

Now that there's a fan translation of the second game, I felt obliged to map the Guadia Quest Saga world:

If enabling gzip is just a checkbox somewhere, why not enable it? A full rewrite of the site wouldn't launch overnight. Not disagreeing that it is desperately needed.

It certainly won't be solved by enabling gzip, but it would be a decent improvement for the immediate term. On my good connection it takes 4 seconds just to download the NES index HTML. Cutting that down to 400ms would be a great start.

The NES index has 8860 links. That's pretty crazy, but doesn't appear to be a huge contributing factor. It's the 300+ logos. They take over 6 seconds to load for me.

A wiki backend would be nice because it would allow for WYSIWYG editing which would be great for Jon, and would open up the possibility of letting mappers maintain their own map postings. It would still mean that mostly everything is manually maintained, but it would be flexible and hopefully easy to deploy.

But yes, don't use a completely custom solution from someone you can't count on sticking around forever. Same kind of deal as the forums - remember all the issues that arose with the obscure old forum software? Everything was worlds better when we finally got a popular, well maintained replacement.

I don't think you necessarily need to jump right to paying someone. Just solicit volunteers here and keep everything out in the open, no need to put your eggs in anyone's basket.

I don't know hardly anything about web development, but I am a software engineer by trade and could lend some assistance along the way. I know that there are other programmers here who probably have even more relevant experience.

Good observation.

Jon, if you could figure out how to turn this on it would be a huge improvement. The savings could be as high as 80-90% on the html pages. It would speed up browsing considerably for slow connections, and would even likely be noticeably faster for fast connections.
