The other two are roughly over four times larger in volume, though.  I'd still think there's some amount of design efficiency of Nintendo's part.

Maybe it's from the lower specs, too...no need/less need for fans or the parts could all be closer together with less risk of overheating.

Message Board Announcements / 2006-04-24: Site updates will resume! :)
« on: April 24, 2006, 06:17:47 pm »
Finally!  I know some of you were waiting for this.  Myrmid.net has given me a great deal and I now have multiple times the space for not much more than what I was paying.  This means I can update again!  I'll be putting up the maps in the order that I received them, but as I did next to no offline updates in the downtime, it could still be a while before the latest maps go up.

As for the forums, the cPanel is up and running again, so hopefully Inty can fix and tweak whatever still needs to be, i.e. those things that were dependent on it.  Hopefully EXP and Gold and daily polls (I still haven't made a poll yet, they're all Inty's so far if you're wondering) will automatically update.  And Inty will soon be showing me how to properly back the forums up periodically myself (he says it has to do with the cPanel, which is why I wasn't shown yet).

If you don't see me much on the boards in the next while, I'm probably prepping an update.  Boy I have a lot to go through...  :/

Grizzly Said:
oh, and how it's bothering me...

I was so happy when we had got the new Forum software with avatars, edits, images, links, smileys, message history, colours, Show-New-Posts function and more..

And I really do not understand why Jon has changed back to that primitive forum software. This forum is about a hobby that relies on beautiful images where every single coloured pixel sits where it belongs - so how can such a forum use a software without any type of images or colours? I so much criticized the first forums and now all my words have been for nothing because we get them back?

Sorry, but I really do not understand the advantages of this forum software.

And I want my clickable links with preview image back, I do not like having to overwrite my temporary storage everytime I want to comment on an image.

About your problem, Terra, I also prefer a version without arrows.

Avatars can be turned on/off.  Have you turned them on?  I thought I asked Inty to make that default.

As for edits/images/links, I still have to sort out how that'll work.  Most likely they will be buyable in the shop once I can depend on EXP and Gold to automatically update.  There's got to be incentive for people to come back and post every day, which I always felt was lacking once I liked earning Karma and Kudos on GameFAQs and LUE2.  To make up for the inconveniences of putting up with the last couple forums, regulars will likely get several items for free, or I'd give you gifts of major EXP/Gold so you can have the pleasure of buying them, and to show your status as true longtime posters.

As for colours, well, I don't mind it like this - I'd like a theme that matches the site even more but that may mean less colours.  I believe you can choose and edit your own themes, so you can add more colour if you like.

I also miss the "show new posts" but I like the "ten latest posts", which is pretty similar until the board gets busy, if it ever does.

It was not really my choice to change the forums to more primitive software, as I've explained, it's not really more primitive, and with Inty actually more comfortable with this software, he's actually here more often now and we can suggest more features and changes and we'd be more likely to see them implemented.

Unfortunately I have a lot of other priorities to get to (resolving issues with the host, clearing out my backlog of a month's worth of maps, choosing the May Map Of The Month, going to E3, and other real-life issues) that some particulars regarding the boards do really have to wait.

Myrmid has actually cut me a lot of slack when it came to the times my bandwidth skyrocketed, so I wouldn't say that.

Maybe they had the whole week off for Easter like you did, Inty.  It would explain one week, anyway.  Not that I like it, but it's a possible reason.

And Inty, I'm not so sure you're in a position to be insulting anyone that may be holding back VGMaps.com.  >_>

I didn't think so.

It's the big topics I mostly want recovered, and since they're the ones that are missing...  :(

I don't even have four megs free at the moment, I bet.  I really need my host to get back to me soon.  I have like a month's worth of backlogged maps, and that to me is the priority when I do get more space.  But since you spent so much time with this, Revned, I should be putting them up - but that's when I get a chance.

I guess I could change my procedure and try to do some offline updates, so everything will be up the first chance I get...  >_<

I can get you the avatars, but while I do miss the old topics, I'm kinda hesitant as they don't mean as much to me if they can't be added on to like active topics.

I'd ask Inty to try his conversion again (after backing up the forums, of course) but I'm sure it could be a nightmare without the proper users, or since you're probably saving them as HTMs or something.

If you just want them on the site somewhere somehow, I might consider it - once my host gets back to me about the space issue.  >_<

3608
Not my fault.  I've been bugging them about it.  They haven't been responding to my space issue, either.

Stolen from IGN.  I'm using a bigger version as my Active Desktop wallpaper.

There are some differences, albeit minor.

3612
So, wait, what?

Non-DX overworld and DX dungeons?

It's a shame...a real damn shame...that the forums had a "reboot" in April.  So for those of you who didn't get it, this is an April Fool's joke.

Here are the full credits:

Stages: JonLeung, osrevad, Grizzly, Revned

Concept: JonLeung

Sprite/Portrait Edits: JonLeung

Title: osrevad

Stage Select Screen: osrevad

Artwork: bustin98

"solid-x.com" Web Site: bustin98

Since many stages were based on chunks/palette swaps of existing stages from the Super NES Mega Man X games, credit is also due to Revned and Geminiman for mapping those games.  Geminiman in particular submitted a lot of maps during the project.

I really had a lot of fun doing the sprite edits (a keen eye would notice which Mavericks were used, and that there is at least one from each of the first 6 Mega Man X games), but I really love bustin98's work.  He understood what my concept was from the get-go.

The deadline was kind of tight (we literally finished this on the evening of March 31st), so future projects with a deadline we'll start a lot earlier.  It's a sad fact that the topic that showed the progression of this project was lost, but I believe it was two months of work, greatly accelerated in the last two weeks of March.

I'd kind of hoped it would've received more attention, but in the end it turned out better looking than I'd imagined, so it was worth it.

I'd like the other mappers to chime in on how they felt the project was, and what everybody else thought of it.

Mega Man Solid X: Guns Of The Mavericks

For this month's "Maps of the Month" featurette, I wish to draw your attention to our Mega Man Solid X: Guns Of The Mavericks (J) (GBA) maps.

Capcom is no stranger to cross-overs.  There are several games where the title itself makes the cross-overs very evident, such as Marvel Vs. Capcom (and its sequel), Capcom Vs. SNK (and its sequel), SNK Vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos, SNK Vs. Capcom: Card Fighter's Clash (the two Neo-Geo Pocket Color games), and the Japanese game Namco X Capcom.  Prior to Marvel Vs. Capcom, their Street Fighter series have also seen cross-overs with X-Men and other Marvel heroes, but the Mega Man series has its share as well, all with Konami.  Capcom's Mega Man Battle Network 5 can be linked to Konami's Boktai 2: Solar Boy Django for a strange cross-over involving Shade Man - and who can forget Mega Man and Simon Belmont (of Konami's Castlevania) teaming up on Captain N: The Game Master?

Capcom's Mega Man (X) crosses over with a Konami property again here in Mega Man Solid X: Guns Of The Mavericks.  The story is essentially a simplified version of Metal Gear Solid's, with Mega Man X in place of Solid Snake.  The gameplay (much to the chagrin of MGS fans) is more closer to the Mega Man X series' blast-them-ups than MGS's stealthiness.  The bosses are Capcom's take on MGS's FOXHOUND unit, if they were Maverick Reploids.  After all, they share the same style of names (they're all named as "[descriptor] [animal]"), and this was probably the inspiration to even try to mix these two completely different games.

The Mega Man series has been a popular one here on VGMaps.com, and for this second VGMaps.com Atlas Project, a group effort of five people worked hard to map out a game...that isn't even available outside of Japan yet.  Will we ever see a North American or European release?  The official web site, http://solid-x.com still reads "Coming Soon to the Nintendo Game Boy Advance"...keep your fingers crossed, MG(S) and MM(X) fans...

So to recognize the team effort in making these maps, JonLeung's, bustin98's, Osrevad's, Grizzly's, and Revned's Mega Man Solid X: Guns Of The Mavericks maps will be known as VGMaps.com's Maps of the Month for April 2006.

But surely if you're a Nintendo fan, you'd recognize which "cat" it is.

Though it's not really a cat...
