Maps In Progress / Re: Jackster's Map Projects

It also reveals that most of the maps aren't nearly as big as the game makes them out to be, which is neat I think.

Those maps are amazing! Great work as always :)

Old, mostly forgotten games like Atlantis no Nazo can be pretty hard to fully map since, unlike modern games that get datamined from top to bottom on the week of release, you can't be sure that all the secrets have been found and documented even after several decades. That or their age might mean that complete guides once existed in print but haven't necessarily been scanned or otherwise preserved on the Internet.

Good job on taking on such a challenging game!

Weird... I've heard of that site so many times in so many different places that I sort of assumed it had been posted here before.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

As always, bustin98 comes through with his technical prowess!

Sure, you can put them up.
I started a thread several years back where I wanted to submit all those orphaned maps but I just forgot about it I guess.
Feel free to ask for any other unfinished project like that because I'm sure I have a lot more just lying around.

That Galaxy collage is amazing!

God I loved the Super Mario Galaxy games... Even though Odyssey was also amazing, I would rather have a Super Mario Galaxy 3 before a Super Mario Odyssey 2.

I've never really done anything special on MAR10 but then again, I do have these long periods where I play very little since I'm usually too busy drawing or mapping.

I did play a whole bunch of Mario games this summer when I stopped working for five months after burning out. I finally justified the purchase of a Switch to myself because of the number of (mostly) Nintendo games that were available. I played all the way through Super Mario Odyssey as well as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury and Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe over the span of a month. They were all fun but Odyssey and Bowser's Fury were my favourites of the four.

Do Luigi games count as Mario ones? Because I also bought Luigi's Mansion 3 and I haven't even started it, though since MAR10 will be over in 15 minutes, I guess I missed it again this year!

Oh sure, I didn't mean my method was better or anything. I just wanted to share an alternative that could be used not only with BizHawk but also any SNES emulator that gives access to CGRAM.

The more tools and methods the better!

Strange...
I was also certain I had written about this on the forum after doing my Equinox maps but apparently, I only dreamed about it and never actually did it.

My method only works for the BizHawk emulator as far as I know since it involves editing a memory address in CGRAM (Color Graphics RAM) which you can't access in some emulators.

In BizHawk, in the Cheats menu, you simply have to add a new cheat with the following values :

Address : 0000
Value : 7C1F
Domain : CGRAM
Size : 2 Byte

This basically changes the colour for the first entry of the background palette to bright pink but you can use any colour the SNES can display.

The format is 15-bit BGR so to fit into a 16-bit word, you use 0 + 5 bits for blue + 5 Bits for green + 5 bits for red.
Each colour channel is a 5-bit value that can thus range range from 0 to 31.
In my example above, bright pink in BGR format is 31, 0, 31 or 0111110000011111 in binary.
You then split that into the two bytes 01111100 (7C in hex) and 00011111 (1F in hex).

I hope I'm not confusing anyone because I've never been a good teacher for technical stuff.

Maps In Progress / Re: Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow (DS)

Good work on all of those Castlevania maps by the way VGCartography!
I often wondered what it would look like to assemble the various maps of the older games together and I'm glad someone did it.

Looking back on this particular project, I'm actually surprised I managed to map so much of it considering how exhausting my method was, even though I now realize I never submitted finished versions of what I've completed so far. I'm pretty sure I'm never going to finish it so it's a good thing someone else is coming up with better tools to automate the process.

Those original development notes are a really neat find.

I've always enjoyed reading about how movies and video games evolve over the course of their making.
The early pitch, the overly ambitious but ill-defined ideas, the grandiose and wild concept art... and the final, often much more limited and conventional result resulting from the various limitations in terms of time, money, feasibility, early customer feedback.

Thanks for the hard work Anonymous, whoever you are 8).

To whoever mapped this game, good job!

Although there are a lot more maps than in the original games, they appear to be more generic instead of all being really unique.

But more than anything, I'm just really intrigued by all the secrecy...
