Title: SMS Phantasy Star
Post by: Will on June 12, 2009, 10:54:50 am
I don't know if Maxim has given up this project but I am developing maps for the 3D dungeons which captures the real look of the 3D view into my Birdseye view style. My prototype is on this attachment.

Would you prefer to continue Phantasy Star, regarding the towns and overworlds Maxim? Or would you prefer to leave it to me? Either way I don't mind.

I don't recall calling dibs on it. I mapped Palma some years ago, but that was more as part of a reverse engineering project.

Special T expressed an interest here: https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/detail.php?message=6325 but I guess he is not doing it any more.

Phantasy Star Cave has already mapped most of the game already, including dungeon maps that don't attempt to capture the look.

It might be interesting to see isometric maps like the Wolfenstein ones, but it'd still require one to draw a lot of artwork. It'd be interesting to see some sort of "exploded" view of the multi-level dungeons.

I've made my own discovery and comparison in those maps on the link. Unfortunately they've got it all wrong, because I've discovered that a door takes up a square and not a line in between (The mistake I did in the prototype). I took the liberty of testing it on the game. For example in the Iala Cave to the northeast, it indicates 8 squares between the door and the corner with the chest in it, but that's not correct because in the game there are 7 sqaures in between. If the map were done with 7 squares with lines for doors the squares might be squashed amongst the empty spaces with lines indicated walls which would make the map grossly misunderstandable, if you see what I mean.

I remember years ago when I used to hand-draw Phantasy Star maps that indeed the doors counted as a full square. The old graph paper mapping days...

At some point I'd like to reverse-engineer the dungeon data from the game, in order to verify if there are any secrets. I suspect they are stored as linked lists, rather than grids, for space reasons, but that would allow for impossible structures like overlaps on the same level. Hopefully that is not the case.

More Phantasy Star maps have come. Do you like the new colours I have picked for "Naharu Cave" and "Triada" maps? The dungeons and towns on the planet Palma are near completion.

All the towns and dungeons of Phantasy Star are completed. The only things that remain are the outside maps of the planets themselves. Maxim, if you're ready to submit your Palma map, go ahead. The biggest problem about mapping the planets is that I don't quite know what the 0, 0 and the bottom-right most coordinates are.

By the way Jon, the Barricade Prison is identified on the planet Palma, I just forgot to type it in earlier.

The internal 0,0 is somewhat irrelevant in a map that wraps, although it can be nice to get it "perfect". I chose a point that centred the map nicely for Palma.

I emailed the map to Jon. Interested people can see it here:

Now the planet Motavia has been completed and put up. The final map and planet Dezoris awaits.

I am pleased to say that the final map of Phantasy Star has been completed. When it arrives on the site, I shall update the SMS Recreation Atlas.
