I came across this today. It's a nice way to view some of the more enormous images on the site. It doesn't need any browser plugins, but (of course) works more smoothly with Silverlight installed.

However, being a Microsoft project, it will probably be gone in a few years.

Interesting... I like how it fades from the lower resolution pieces while zooming and scrolling. It's hard to notice most of the time unless you're really going all over the place.
And of course the View Original button is useful, too, for saving the file without having to load it in the normal browser window first.
Edit: Very easy to upload to and works fast. Kudos to Microsoft.

Well, the View Original link will probably fall foul of the anti-hotlink protection if the viewer isn't embedded on this site (if the embedded version even has that link).

Surprisingly, it doesn't. Right clicking the link and using Save As..., it let me download the full Dry Dry Desert map. No idea about the embedded version, though, as I don't have a place to test it.

Right-click -> save as generally sends a blank referer. A plain old click would fail. Or maybe the hotlink protection is not working?
I actually found it to be quite slow. On large maps it can take 10-15 minutes to process. "Uploads" are fast because it's not an upload, of course.
Don't miss the fullscreen view button at the lower right.

Here's a GreaseMonkey script that adds this to the whole site automatically (!). It adds an icon next to each image link in the Atlas which submits the creation form to the Seadragon site, then embeds the result after the table for the current game. My Javascript is pretty awful :) and I had to do some nasty hacks to make it work, but it does work, in the latest Firefox and latest GreaseMonkey.
Remove the .txt extension and drop it on Firefox to install.

Doesn't work for me. I'm running Firefox 3.5.3 and Greasemonkey 0.8.20090920.2 on OS X.

Hard for me to fix :( if you can tell me what the Error Console says I could try to guess how to fix it...

As for the script... I'm not sure it would be really necessary for every single map on the site. It feels like something that should be added personally if at all.

Of course, it's not very useful for smaller images. But a single click is nicer than copying and pasting a URL into a separate tab.

Seadragon was rebranded "zoom.it" and you can attach it to any URL by prepending the image URl with "http://zoom.it/?url=", for example:

Use the shortened URL, instead of the full one that includes the original URL.

I did. Of course, I was checking it less than 10 minutes after you posted it, so it probably hadn't finished converting yet. :P
Now it loads in an instant, and it is a sight to behold.

The long URL redirects to the short one as soon as it's been first opened. I mentioned it as an easy way to "seadragonise" - I guess that should be "zoom.itize" - images without having to find out the short URL first, and thus maybe something to add to the site for larger maps. Of course, the manual editing doesn't play well with that.

And the good news is, it recognizes files that have already been uploaded, so even the long URL is just as effective after the first use.

If I had to, for whatever reason, delete, modify, or rename the original file, how would that affect it?

Hmmm... not sure. You can try testing it with a small image like I did and change the file in between attempts. (I'd try it myself but I don't have my own website to keep the file URLs identical. :P)

I missed the bus on the way home so I stopped by the Apple Store at Southgate Mall today. Now, every time I miss the bus, I've made a habit of trying out the iPads and then leaving Safari on VGMaps.com (>_>) and have become familiar with the fact that the iPads (or at least these demo units) don't like the really big maps, such as most of them for Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night. But today I went to this topic and then to the zoom.it link that I posted, and was pleased to see that the iPad is now able to view the map of the entire castle that way, with the same multi-touch pinch-zoom functionality. Neato!

That's good. Yeah, as far as I can tell, Safari (and Macs in general?) chokes on most large images or gifs.

It's more likely a lack of RAM than the browser itself. Takes a lot of memory to view huge images.

Considering the same images could be viewed on my home PC (with 512 MB of RAM) without problem, I wouldn't be so sure about that. :P

Considering I use a Mac and never have any problems, I am sure about that. The iPad only has 256 MB of RAM, which is hardly anything, especially when trying to load such massive images. When your computer loads an image from, say, a PNG file, it decompresses it into memory. My full SotN map is over 500 MB uncompressed.
