Title: VGMaps + Gameplay Footage = ???
Post by: NESAtlas on July 04, 2010, 09:12:31 am
Hello atlas makers!

After stumbling across your great site I had the idea to track gameplay footage over various maps and the end results turned out better than expected...

See for yourself on my YouTube Page (http://youtube.com/nesatlas).

I hope you don't mind  :)

I've made 8 videos so far and I figured it was time to make you guys aware of what I was doing. I'd love to hear what you think and if you have any requests on what you'd like to see next then let me know.

PS: I was going to make one for RC Pro Am, but it turns out This Map (https://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/RCPro-Am-Level1.png) is missing some track section... just thought you'd like to know  ;)

I just watched a couple videos, and I must say that is beyond awesome. It gives the player a general idea of what's gonna be played out through the game so they can plan out their own strategy in comparison to the player's gameplay. Only downside is the characters are too small to see, so keeping an eye on them while viewing the rest of the map can be a bit tricky.

Very cool! Reminds me of that new multiplayer Castlevania game. May I ask how you combined the videos with the maps?

I used After Effects and basically shift the video over the map frame-by-frame as the player progresses.

I saw most of these videos a couple weeks ago but forgot to mention it here.

Pretty neat stuff.  I like how you applied the flash (when Mother Brain is defeated) to the rest of the screen in the Metroid speedrun one, which I think is your newest video.  I think we'd all like to see more.

There's just something neat about seeing the whole area during gameplay action, as if they were continuous places that exist even outside the protagonist's field of vision.

And Revned, I think that multiplayer Castlevania game, Harmony Of Despair, increased the site's hits around E3 by a decent percentage, probably because of one blog review that mentions VGMaps.com that was linked to everywhere, but also because of your massive Symphony Of The Night map.  :D

That's the smallest zoom scale of gameplay I have ever seen in a game. This stuff is fantastic! ;D

I'd like to see any version of Prince of Persia 1 being played like that. The game is a classic, do design a video for it, if you've got time.

It's kind of like watching a stage play from several hundred yards away.  I dunno, it's a cool visually, but not sure if it's useful.

Reminds me of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d82j_Qfp_VA

Pretty awesome. It takes the "you are really exploring this big world" feeling that maps give and puts it in motion.

I wish it could be done easily with SNES games, but the parallax backgrounds kind of ruin that. The ground would look the same, but the background would stand out as a big clashing box.

Thanks :)

I always try to expand the gameplay visuals to fullscreen whenever possible like when defeating Mother Brain. I've also done this with my Mega Man videos during each stage intro. Ultimately I'd like to show animation to offscreen enemies as well.

I could use a volunteer to help make a good background and/or user icon for my youtube page (http://youtube.com/nesatlas).

If interested it needs to meet the following criteria:

Advertises VGMaps.com somehow (cuz I obviously couldn't make these videos otherwise!)
Attributes to creator any maps shown
Width at least 1420 pixels wide
Center section 960 pixels wide
Height at least 2400 pixels high
Preferably .PNG format
Feel free to also put your name on there if you want!

Also, I'll let whoever helps with this choose a video they'd like me to make! One for the background and another for a cool icon :)

Here's (https://i.imgur.com/CGkh1.png) what my current background looks like.

Any takers?

As a suggestion to design your YouTube page, I think you should extract all your favourite game sprites (preferably playable characters, side characters, monsters, bosses etc), frame them with borders and place them all together in the style of a royal portrait gallery. That ought to brighten up the page and give the impression its all about video games.

I liike BlackLeotardFront's name for MetaFilter's mention of your videos...  "ROM With A View (http://www.metafilter.com/93591/ROM-with-a-view)".  Now that's clever!  Also some interesting comments on that same link there.

I approve of anything that gets VGMaps more attention, of course.  :)

Those were great. I've never played Zelda II (:-[) so I was rather lost as to what was going on, but fun to watch nonetheless. And the Marble Madness one was certainly madness. :P

Nice job.

Nice job. I like the zoom outs at the end of Gimmick!'s and the Castle Exterior. I always get lost in Kid Icarus, and seeing the sheer number of rooms the player didn't even visit, it's no wonder. I'd be lost for hours there, maybe even days. :P

Great. I'm impressed that from the map you erased the guards after killing them and kept the exit door open after pressing the pressure plate that opens it.

I've added a few more since Castlevania II... and also my first 16-bit attempt!

Adventures of Lolo (ADHD version ;)) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JIeSWLaTSY)
Sonic CD: Palmtree Panic 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4giMSWoAcgw)

Unfortunately the map I got was from ImageShack, but the person who brought it to my attention says TerraEsperZ made it. Is there a reason why it's not listed on here? I found a topic which appeared to be a work-in-progress but I think the maps were removed from that thread as well. Just wanted to correctly attribute the work!
Title: Re: VGMaps + Gameplay Footage = ???
Post by: TerraEsperZ on October 11, 2010, 03:34:43 pm
It's not listed because I very rarely submit maps to the site unless I've finished mapping the whole game, which is something that probably won't happen in Sonic CD's case (and many others unfortunately). Glad that it was useful though, and don't hesitate if you need the others I've done of that game. I'm not sure why they vanished from the thread, but that might have been because I didn't have an Imageshack account back then, so they probably got deleted after a while of not being accessed.

Someday I'll have to do some maintenance on all those unfinished in-progress threads of mine...

Nice job. I like the effect of viewing the cutscenes through the grid of borders. How much effort did it take to do the Sonic one like that? I can't imagine editing out the background in every single frame would be any small task. It's definitely impressive.

Thanks! Luckily the emulator I used (http://code.google.com/p/gens-rerecording/) allows different layers to be turned off; therefore I got around the parallax background issue. This technique makes SNES games possible to use as well. My first for that console will most likely be DKC2... more specifically this map (https://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/SuperNES/DonkeyKongCountry2-Diddy%27sKong-Quest-KremQuay-BrambleBlast.png).

Been awhile since I've posted here, but I hit my 1-year anniversary and wanted to do something special:

There's a bunch more I've made over the months as well. Check 'em out if you want  ;D

Looks like someone else has a passion to create a video map. I hope a new improved version can be created with the floor panels appearing smashed when after falling, the guards staying dead after being killed and such like. I wonder if the SNES version of Prince of Persia is going to have its own video map.

Yeah there's actually a couple other people who've made an atlas video after I did. I've been trying to keep track of all of them:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_SNGA0ywRQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_SNGA0ywRQ)

and there's this guy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S323DV-ISxg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S323DV-ISxg)

This one mixes an atlas video with real footage:

http://vimeo.com/13118504 (http://vimeo.com/13118504)

and this guy even made a rough program to line up the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF5iXzgA40E (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF5iXzgA40E)

Unfortunately I believe he stopped working on it :(

As for me... I'm working on Metal Storm which will include my first attempt at a parallax background... with a big thanks to TerraEsperZ!

http://vimeo.com/13118504 (http://vimeo.com/13118504)

This one is incredible! It's especially neat to see that the levels are entirely animated, not just just the part where the player is. Enemies keep moving even when they would be far off-screen! That must have taken a lot of effort to achieve.

And of course I'm looking forward to seeing your video of Metal Storm :)

Yeah, if only you could make it so that the entire stage is animated.
Title: Re: VGMaps + Gameplay Footage = ???
Post by: NESAtlas on May 25, 2011, 07:54:53 am
Actually I can animate stuff off-screen... I just haven't done it that often as it just adds to the creation time.

See Prince of Persia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqhNhs9jD8A) for an example.

I'm sure I'll put in the extra effort at some point again, but I'm taking baby steps for now like with the parallax background in Metal Storm (which should be done by Friday I think).

Hi guys! Sorry for my long absence. As some of you know (I've seen your comments ;)), I'm still making Atlas Videos. I figured I'd stop by and present the latest one:

NES Atlas: Snake Rattle N Roll (Aglar's Speed Run) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc8nePqQ4rc)

I've got a bunch more stuff in the works too (and plenty of unfinished projects).

And a big thanks to all the mappers who put in the hard work already which makes these possible!
