Title: E.V.O.: Search for Eden
Post by: N. Harmonik on August 08, 2010, 03:30:21 pm
Can someone please make maps of this SNES game's levels? Preferably with the crystals' locations pointed out.

Yes! I would love an excuse to map out this game.  Go to my site www.vgmapper.com and put this request in the queue so I won't forget.  I've been thinking of taking on this game as a project for a long time.  It will be interesting to see how it maps.

O.K. I'll start this in about a week when I finish another huge project I'm working on.

Tested the first level in EVO for mapping compatibility and I understand now why nobody has gone after this simple looking game before, it's not so simple.  High levels of parallel scrolling in the background, like the first level of DKC, means simple screenshots are out and I'll have to go with foregrounds placed over background block sets.  Not a huge problem but adds to time spent on each map.  Already made a stack of codes, everything's looking good so far.

When the maps are done, will they be posted on both your website and this website?

Yes, since I picked up the request here they'll go up on both sites.  I will however make raw maps (unmarked maps) along with the marked ones and I don't know if Jon will want one, the other, or both.

The first raw map is done, this game is a little fighter.  I'll post it this weekend.  Since there are no crystals in the first level, or in some other levels, I'll mark simple things like edible objects too.  Say Jon, if you're reading this, do you want both marked and unmarked maps, or do you have a preference?

Some games look great unmarked (like the Zelda games), but I think in many cases having maps marked is the better choice (if they're marked neatly, like with in-game icons and fonts whenever possible).  And unless the graphics are spectacularly beautiful, I think I wouldn't need the unmarked ones if I have the marked ones.

OK, so it shall be.  I've sent the first one in, tell me what you think once it's up this weekend.  And certainly some backgrounds can be pretty.  Check out some of the mods I made at the bottom of this page: http://www.vgmapper.com/SysSNES/E/EarthwormJim2.html

No problem, but it's a long road ahead.  I'd forgotten how much more work mazes are then raw maps.  We'll see what other kinds of tricks EVO has up it's sleeve.

2nd ones up.  So far the game is only throwing strange obstacles at me instead of difficult ones.  But I'm already working with a wall of code so we'll see how long that lasts.

3rd ones up.  I hope these bare bones legends aren't too confusing.

Not confusing to me at all.

Yet (don't take this the wrong way) it seems you're the only one on your site who's currently doing anything. ???

Yeah that's how it is at vgmapper.  The only contributors that ever helped me with request stuff are Flying Armor and Kung Fu Furby.  Most of the vgmappers either have their own site or post elsewhere along with my site.  Dark Wolf runs Pixel Warehouse, Enhasa runs VideoGameSprites.net, Ray is the guy behind VGMuseum, Alex is the creator of Fantasy Anime, Flying Armor and Peardian are from right here, Furby came over from SNESMusic, Kinsuke and Mike are GameFAQs contributors, and Marsil just came out of the blue.

#4's up.  Sorry this is taking so long.  Too many projects at once.

Hmm...

Red outline for edible things that attack you.
Green outline for edible things that don't attack you.
White outline for your forms and crystals.

Neat.

Next ones up, sorry it took so long, I've spent the past few days doing nothing but Ultima.  And you got it with the coloring system.  You might also say that green means non moving and red means anything that will damage you on contact.  I'll probably do bosses in red too and there will be other things to mark later on, like friendlies that should not be attacked or eaten, so if you have a color preference tell me now.

Colour preference?

...

Pink for the win!

PS: Those volcanoes in the Cave of Zinichtys... Should I beware of them?

OK, friendlies will appear in pink.  As for the volcanoes, they fire so fast and so erratically you're better off just dashing through them as fast as you can instead of attempting to carefully dodge each lava rock.

Number 6 is up.  Now that I've cleared Ultima ROV2 I'll focus more time on this.

Oh good. :D I was beginning to get concerned with the passing of a full week and the knowledge that the sixth map isn't that big.

Alright, it has to be said: Creationism and the theory of evolution are compatible after all!

next one's up completing the age of fish, a nice little warm up, and mapping precedents have been established.  When I did the Cave of Zinichtys I was using a camera control code to look past the usual visual limit.  But it was buggy.  When it didn't work in the Cave of Origin I had to make a walk through walls code and I discovered to my horror that this game really was designed to be WYSIWYG and nothing else.  If you walk through a wall at the wrong point you zip back to the entrance or elsewhere.  If the camera scrolls somewhere it's not supposed to be it starts displaying some area you're not really looking at.  There's no right way to look past the in game borders so I'm afraid that's all your getting.  I hate to do nothing but display only what you already saw in the game but I'm at my skill limit.  On the upside mapping will go faster now.

Codes are nice when they work but there are games with complex rendering engines where you'd need to disassemble and hack the game code directly to get the effect you want. While mapping Max Payne, several codes I tried would move my character on an off-screen location but without updating the map to reflect the change. A simple code will often bypasses a whole chunk of the display routines resulting in such problems. Good luck nonetheless :)

Well, as long as no hidden areas or passageways are left out, I'm fine with not seeing beyond the borders.

Yes massive direct code hacking is beyond me so I'm cornered as far as looking around walls goes.  If I do miss something though don't hesitate to tell me so I can fix it.  As for some good news I'm making great progress and for at least the next couple of weeks there will be a new EVO map posted every other day starting tomorrow.

Yep.  So I can stop announcing updates here now that they're regular.  Other then that just be sure to tell me if I missed anything.

A couple of things.  First I can now safely say I'm keeping the current update schedule until I clear the entire game.  Second an oops, I only just discovered that HP from meat changes based on what body your in.   :-[  So all those numbers are basically wrong.  But the EXP numbers are right at least.
Title: Re: E.V.O.: Search for Eden
Post by: N. Harmonik on September 28, 2010, 07:06:05 pm
Well, the higher your defense is, the less HP you'll recover from each piece of meat. So the numbers you typed should be correct if your defense is zero. Maybe if you just add a small note explaining that to each map...

Post by: Trop on September 29, 2010, 07:19:23 pm
So far it's been how much you get back if your defense is max since I've been using the toughest bodies available so at least the numbers won't be disappointments.  I may come up with some kind of replacement system later.

??? What on Earth happened to your website? The map on the front page leads to the raw version and when I clicked on the SNES section (along with a few others), it said there were no maps in the database!
Title: Re: E.V.O.: Search for Eden
Post by: Trop on September 29, 2010, 10:43:46 pm
The front page was just a little linking mistake made by me.  I wasn't paying attention.  As for the databases, they're being redone so the old links that went to the games that maps were listed under will now go to the maps themselves.

A little correction before going on my vacation in regards to the latest map: it's 'Polsaurus', not 'Polasurus'. :P

I watched a video to see just what this game was like in action, and noticed there are overworld maps too. If you don't mind, I'd like to go and add to the request by asking you to do those as well. Might as well, right? :P
