Title: TerraEsperZ's thread for Corrected and No Longer Missing maps
Post by: TerraEsperZ on March 10, 2011, 09:42:35 pm
Taking a hint from Peardian, I've decided to start a generic thread for maps that wouldn't justify their own threads, most of which should consist of maps I've corrected or added to projects that were considered completed until I realized they weren't. I won't bother to include links, so consider every map mentioned here to have been submitted to JonLeung and thus should appear with the next site update.

Tonight, after reading people talking about the bonus stages in Nemesis (Game Boy), I decided to find out where they were located and both mapped them out in addition to indicating their locations on the regular maps. I submitted all the maps of the game again since PNGGauntlet managed to squeeze out a few kB out the other maps. Otherwise this is what's new:

Nemesis (GB):
-Stage 2 (Updated)
-Bonus Stage 1 (New)
-Stage 4 (Updated)
-Bonus Stage 2 (New)

I'll probably have to update the GBC game version of Nemesis called Gradius in the Konami Collection Volume 1 if those bonus levels indeed missing. But first I need to know how to access them.

I've included the location of the entrances in the updated maps for Stage 2 and 4, so you'll be able to find them quite easily.

-Castle Corridor (New)

-Clock Tower (New)
-Dance Hall (New)
-Floating Garden (New)
-Forbidden Area (New)

I also just submitted slightly updated versions of the three larger maps for Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow too. Barely updated layouts and... slightly different background colors for each one. Barely worth mentioning really but since I was putting out new maps for the game, I thought I might as well have revise the old ones a bit.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA):
-Castlevania (Updated)
-Chaotic Realm (Updated)
-Boss Rush (Updated)

Since map updates don't show up on the main page, I thought it best to at lest mention it here. The following maps were updated last week:

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA):
-Castlevania (Corrected)
-Underground Reservoir (Corrected)

I corrected the water level in the fifth section of Stage 2: Greece which was inconsistent and had gone unnoticed thanks to how dark the water was compared to the background. I also altered the ninth section of Stage 1: Romania to show the palette changing from day to night. It wasn't really necessary but I think it looks better this way (watch out, I'm going Lucas on you!). The updated maps should be up soon as I've already sent them to JonLeung.

Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis):
-Stage 1: Romania (Updated)
-Stage 2: Greece (Corrected)

Thanks I am glad you made these posts, I had been meaning to ask you which AOS maps were updated. Its too bad the main page does not say which specific maps are added for each game.

I just wanted to warn JonLeung that true to my word, I'll see about submitting as many completed maps (for a given value of completed) as I can to the site. However, after browsing through my various project directories, I realized I had had grossly underestimated the size of that particular undertaking, so this will *probably* require a couple of weeks just to make all of it presentable (headers, legends and such). In short, I'm not sure I'll even have anything ready for the weekend but I'll be working hard on it and will be using this thread to update you as I complete stuff.

*sob* So much work to do... :'(

Better the time spent now while you've got the time, than to leave them indefinitely and never finish them ever, wasting the time spent on them thus far.

Time is a valuable commodity that shouldn't be spent on unfinished projects.

Well, I guess you wouldn't be working on finished projects.  You'll always be working on unfinished projects, but I mean each of them shouldn't be forever unfinished, or else it was a waste of your time.

I'm still single and have no kids so I probably have more free time than I think I do, so learning to manage the time I have is a lesson I ought to learn and apply to my own life...

Too true. I've been counting and I'm standing at roughly 172 "finished" maps across 20 games and 8 systems that I never sent in.

Okay, I knew you had a lot, but I didn't think it would span that many games and platforms...

Alright, let's start the ball rolling. Project number 1 finished:

Ristar (Game Gear):
-Planet Flora (NA/EU) / Neer (JP), Act 1 & 2 (New)

A little something to mention: originally, the background color is uniform but goes through 7 different shades as you travel from the bottom to the top of the map. Using bands of colors didn't look that good so I did the same thing Grizzly did with his Lion King (SNES) maps and simply made a gradiant going from the lightest color to the darkest. It's a bit of a cheat but the Game Gear is colorful enough that it looks almost natural and much better than the real colors.

Feel free to comment but do note that the map headers were put together very quickly and might change if I actually decide to revisit any of these projects.

JonLeung, I don't expect you to keep following this thread and will be sending all these maps by email unless you request otherwise.

I don't know if anyone is waiting for a project of mine to be finished (aside from JonLeung) but just in case, I wanted to apologize for not releasing anything in a while.

For starters, I haven't had much free time to actually work on anything. This is actually a good thing since around the time I released my maps for The Immortal (NES), I was rapidly approaching "mapping burnout". This tends to happen to me after several months of mapping where I slowly stop playing games at all and feel like I must map something, anything to occupy my mind. It's hard to explain but it's like I feel like playing a game just to have a good time or heck, catch up on a TV show on DVD is basically time wasted where I could be mapping instead (yeah, I'm fully aware of how weird I must sound right now). Thanks to working more overtime, I've stopped mapping for the most part and I'm slowly but surely allowing myself to play games for instead.

The second reason why several projects haven't been worked on in forever is that right now, I'm faced with having to switch emulators. In short, VBA-ReRecording is simply much better than VBA-M in terms of tools and customization, just like Gens-ReRecording is much better than plain old Gens (and someday, I should really leave ZSNES in favor of something better but so far, no other SNES emulator seems to have emerged as the clear winner in terms of alternatives). I just *hate* having to change emulator for a given system since it means all my previous savestates are no longer usable and in GENS' case, since the colour rendering has changed, everything already captured is pretty much unusable without being adjusted which would require a lot of time.

And don't suggest using two emulators for the same system because that's just not how I work. It's stupid, it's probably infantile, whatever, but it's either an old emu, or a new one, but not both. That's just unworkable for me since I'm way too rigid and methodical.

Anyway, I'm slowly working on switching over like I said so once the adjustments have been made, I might just start working again on some pending Genesis map projects like Ristar and Contra: Hard Corps.

I guess snesmaster got some success in adjusting the palettes for his snes maps.

Not sure if Gens devs can help in this case, and VRA-rr developer, klmz, was missing for quite a while as well. But asking them in where they use to chat (tasvideos) never hurts.

Okay, so this next batch was finished back in *2008*. I know, it's been quite a while but I was really hoping to massively revise them before sending them in. Unfortunately, that's not going to be happening anytime soon, so better to just submit what I have. I simply added headers (which took me all weekend) but kept their original completion dates.

Just a few things to note about this project. First of all, I mostly mapped this game using the latest prototype ROM which had very nearly identical stages but also had a debug mode where you could move around the stages at will. I then played the regular game to compare and made the necessary corrections but since this was 7 years ago, I might have missed a few things.

Second, the names of the stages are from the prototype ROM as well. The final game only had names for the second area of each planet as well as the boss fights but none for the first area. Since they're identical between the two versions, I've opted to use the names for the first area of each planet as well.

Finally, most of the backgrounds are kinda crappy since I extended them vertically by repeating the various horizontal slices several times and it doesn't always look good. If I ever come back to this project, I'll come up with something better.

Project number 5 (still unfinished):

Ristar (Genesis):
-Planet Flora - Area 1: Light Plain
-Planet Flora - Area 2: Dark Woods
-Planet Flora - Boss Arena: Riho is coming
-Planet Undertow - Area 1: Blue Water
-Planet Undertow - Area 2: Lost Palace
-Planet Undertow - Boss Arena: Ohsat Attack
-Planet Scorch - Area 1: Flare Surface
-Planet Scorch - Area 2: Under Factory
-Planet Scorch - Boss Arena: Adahan Fall
-Planet Sonata - Area 1: Du-Di-Da
