Title: Request Listings
Post by: Trop on December 23, 2011, 07:36:03 pm
This is just a list of everything that's been requested on this board if somebody needs a project to do.  I'll update it as time goes by.

So everything from:
Castlevania
Donkey Kong
Doom
Dragon Quest
Final Fantasy
Kirby
Mario/Wario/Yoshi
Metroid
Micro Machines
Pokemon
Prince of Persia
Sonic
Ultima
Zelda

Got it.  I've been trying to monitor the front page but I guess things can still slip past me.
Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: alucard on January 14, 2012, 08:07:45 am
I requested Dragon Warrior 3 for Game Boy Color because nobody ever mapped that game. I also think I asked about Dragon Warrior 3, but a complete map set like Dragon Quest 3 was for the SNES maps. (You know with maps of every single place you can visit including shrines)

Are you the person who owns Vgmapper.com? If so what happened to that site because the home page is just an image of maps now, all the updates are gone.
Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: Trop on January 14, 2012, 10:43:59 am
I've got the Dragon Quest/Warrior series under eternal request so it should be assumed if any Dragon Quest/Warrior game hasn't been mapped it needs to be.  I wouldn't worry about that series to much though since it's just a matter of time until Paco gets them all.

Yes vgmapper is my place and I still update, I just don't post the updates list anymore.  The most recent updates were:
Peardian made another Yoshi's Island map.
I ripped the soundtrack to Sim Isle.
I made 3 new King of Rally maps.
I fully mapped out Battle of Olympus.
Peardian made a bunch more Ocarina of Time stuff.
Paco made a Sword of Mana enemy treasure guide
I ripped the soundtrack to Double Dragon.
and I ripped the soundtrack to Frogger (PSX).

Post by: alucard on January 14, 2012, 01:04:30 pm
Thanks, I think you should go back to the way it was to where you mentioned what the updates were and which dates, etc. Because the way it is now, people would have no idea what is being updated. There are too many games on that site to click on to see when there is something new.

I had been clicking on some of the Dragon Warrior games on that site to check for updates, but I never knew about any of the stuff you mentioned. Paco did a great job on the SNES DQ3 Maps and NES DW4 Maps, so if he does any others from that series I know they will be just as good.

This is just a list of everything that's been requested on this board if somebody needs a project to do.  I'll update it as time goes by.

--NES--
Galaga
Gauntlet

i'm not sure how maps of galaga would help..
i've played the NES version to several million with
savestates..

the only thing that changes are the enemies,
and they recycle every 30something levels..

the backgrounds are all just scrolling stars,
and there are a few bonus rounds with enemies
that repeat.. you're better off finding a replay
at MARP (mame arcade replays), and HARP
(home action replays)..

you might be able to get screenshots for
gauntlet also:

i'm working on the arcade version with a friend,
and will post those shortly.

You can actually play Magmoor Caverns by yourself. I'm pretty sure I remember doing so last year.
Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: Will on April 22, 2012, 12:02:15 pm
How exactly do you access the Magmoor Caverns? Each time I try the Wireless Mode all I get is a response waiting for an opponent and pressing the Start button won't activate it. All the other buttons appear to be jammed on this screen and I cannot exit the screen.
Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: Rew on April 22, 2012, 03:59:15 pm
Really? That's weird. Pressing start should activate a practice session at Magmoor Caverns. I tried it just now, and it worked fine for me. :(

Maybe something's wrong with your wireless connection?
Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: Trop on May 04, 2012, 01:03:08 pm
Nope I can't do it either.  Neither ideas or dsmume will let me go past the wireless mode screen.  The only way to get past this is with a savestate somebody else made in magmoor caverns.

I didn't add Peach since her games are counted under Mario and those are covered by series requests.
Also StarFighters76 has already done a lot of RE stuff, they're just not posted here.  You could just email him or something and tell him to send them to Jon since he already has other stuff up here.

Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: Trop on May 22, 2014, 10:39:49 pm
No.  Heh, well maybe.  If you look at the front page you notice Will just took up U.N. Squadron for Arcade and it's on the list.  I'm doing Magical Vacation, even though I'm going to put it on hold soon for something else.  There are other mappers working on again off again on other requests too.  If you really want a request done try to find or make all necessary codes and cheats then find a mapper with no current projects cooking.  If I saw a request that came with all the codes I'd need for mapping and I had nothing else to do I take a crack at it.

LTIan pick which game you want most and I'll start on it. My biggest problem is sticking with a game untill the end so I'm not promising that I will finish.

*Sighs*

Well, I've got a Collaboration Project going on over at the Spriter's Resource based one of my favorite Looney Tunes Games.

I don't know if Will Mallia is going to get more of them, but feel free to ask him if he'll continue.

But... out of my favorite Looney Tunes Games, I'd say...

Road Runner (Arcade)

That game should be easy. It's just a couple of stages that loops all together with different items and traps placed.

Unless if Will Mllia won't continue with Death Valley Rally, I might have a plan A and a Plan B:

Plan A: If Will should get more maps from Death Valley Rally, you can get maps from Road Runner (Arcade).

Plan B: If Will doesn't continue with Death Vally Rally, you can start off where he stopped.

Does that sound good?

Post by: BumFengShui on May 31, 2014, 07:15:26 am
Here are the 1st 4 levels, after this it just keeps recycling them with more stuff added each time. I actually mapped the 1st 20 levels before I noticed the map viewer in mame was duplicating and removing some columns of pixels, so those 20 maps were all a waste, these 4 are fixed though. They don't have the backgrounds & I'm not great at hacking by any standards so I may never be able to get them since they don't show up in the map viewer.

I understand, but thank you for getting the First 4 Stages of the Road Runner Arcade. :)

The scenery looks very nice. I like pixel-renderings of my favorite cartoon series. :)

Title: Re: Request Listings

Wondering if there's some way to improve this listing other than just compiling what is seen on this board already.

I was thinking about if there is some way to note who made the original request and then also have someone else "second" a request, because anyone can just make a request for any game, and then would that have equal weight to any other request?

But then would it be unfair to newcomers?  Are people going to take certain requests more seriously or not at all if they saw who requested them?  Would people make alternate accounts just to second their own requests?

But then also, do we need to weigh the popularity of requests?  Wouldn't that make obscure (but just as good) games harder to get mapped?  Of course, that's also assuming anyone looks at these requests in the first place and actually considers them...but maybe they don't because they don't know what would be more worth the effort or more appreciated because they don't know which of these requests are actually seconded and thirded?  Which comes first?  Need experience to get a job, but need a job to get experience?  Did the chicken come first, or the egg?  Etc.

It's definitely tricky.  Anyone have any ideas about if there's a way to manage/consolidate requests?  I mean, as we've talked about umpteen times before, fulfilling them is another thing altogether.  But just sorting them?  Maybe there needs to be a standardized topic header for each request?  I don't know.  Now I'm rambling.  Thoughts?
Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: Revned on July 24, 2016, 09:54:49 pm
I've ranted about it before, but requests carry absolutely no weight for me, no matter who makes them or how they're organized.
Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: Maxim on July 25, 2016, 01:17:07 am
Yeah, close the requests section. If anything it's off-putting to see the begging and ranting.
Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: JonLeung on July 25, 2016, 07:48:50 am
Well, I don't know if I'd go that far.  If I close the Requests board, then people are just going to make requests on other boards.

I'm pretty sure there's a way for users to to filter what boards they can see, so you could just do that to not show the Requests board if it really means nothing to you.  Then you would actually want me to keep the Requests board open just to keep them out of your sight.
Title: Re: Request Listings
Post by: Revned on July 25, 2016, 10:17:10 am
I'm happy to ignore them, but I think that having a dedicated Requests board gives people the wrong expectation. People see that there's a process for requesting maps, and then understandably expect that that means requests will be fulfilled. Adding any more formality, as you've suggested, seems like it will worsen the problem...

I don't know if I'd completely kill the board, but I'm not sure that things are any better now than they were before we had it. I'm not trying to be antagonistic, I just hate to give people false hope or frustration.

Do Not Close the Request Boards!

What if somebody wanted to request new maps for the site?

I shouldn't have made this thing.  I should have kept my mouth shut.  Why can't I ever keep my mouth shut.  I'm doing it right now.....
 :(
OK new rule then, no more free maps.  Instead of requests it'll be commissions.  At least for me.  When I finish my current project, that's it.  I wont' make anymore maps unless somebody's paying.  Congratulations LTIan you can just buy maps from me now.

Oooh, how mercenary of you.

I suppose if you and your clients figure out an agreeable price, if certain maps are worth that much to someone, it might cut down on the begging.  Throwing money around, like it or not, does seem to cause things to happen, in almost all situations.

The only thing is that anyone paying for commissions (or anything) should understand that whatever deal or transaction happens here is between you and the other person; if a deal goes bad for any reason, VGMaps.com is not to be held responsible for any of that.

That being said, carry on.

EDIT: Now make sure you think this through.  You will have to be prepared for some interesting scenarios.  For example, what happens if someone wants to pay you for a huge job - and it's not particularly exciting for you, and maybe even technically challenging.  And you start work on it, and it takes a long time.  What if, before you are able to finish, someone else independently makes all of the maps and submits them, and they turn out to be comparable, equal, or, dare I say it, better (in the client's eyes) than the maps you are commissioned to do.  If the client finds these other person's maps satisfactory, they won't want to pay you.  (They also aren't obligated to pay the other person who fully mapped it, especially since maps have (as far as I know) always been submitted here with no expectation of payment.)  What then?  Your time has already been spent making some or most of the maps.  And if they aren't fundamentally different to the ones already made, I wouldn't see any point to put them up.  Would you be okay with such a scenario?

Even without that, there would have to be enough understanding between all parties involved.  Does the requester pay first?  What if the mapper is unable to finish or takes much longer than expected?  Or does the requester pay at the end?  What if they're jerks and decide not to?  If it was merely an online purchase of an item that merely needs to be sent out, then paying first makes sense.  But we're talking about something that can potentially take weeks, months, or even years.  Unless you are able to make this your full-time job?

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but if you are serious about offering your mapping services through commission, I hope there aren't new problems that arise from this...

Oh I'll cut any deals at my DA page, not here.

As for making stuff somebody else already has, or is working on, If that's what people want I'll even remake something I've already done.  It doesn't have to be posted here or anywhere, It can be for their eyes only.  And I'm not worried about speed, I'm the fastest mapper around. I was doing those DKC maps one a day at first then two a day near the end.  And if a deal goes bad I'll shoulder the loss, it's fine.

I'll just do an assessment, and if they agree to the price I'll give them a general time line with opt outs for me.  If they agree I'll make the map and post it in thumbnail until they pay.

Maybe I said it wrong.

I should have said:

Please do not close the Map Request Boards. It is an important part of this forum.

But if you were to offer Commissions, I would gladly pay with dA's Point Currency System.

I don't even know what those point things are.  No I'll be asking for money.  I'll posting commission notifications at DA today.  If you want something come request it.  Difficulty assessments are free.

That link will help you know everything about Points.

I cannot speak for Trop, but if I were in his position, Points would be the last means of exchange I would ever consider, the primary reason being that you cannot convert Points back into currency. The only things Points seem to be good for is for buying stuff from the deviantART store and for getting memberships.

Heh, yeah that's what I thought points were.  I'd never accept those.  DA already takes way too much out of prints.  Sell $100 in prints at DA and make $10?  No thanks, Red Bubble offers much better ratios.

THEN I REFUSE TO PAY/COMMISSION FOR MAPS TO RIPPED COMPLETELY!  >:(

If it takes 'til the end of time, I'll simply wait until someone rips the maps from games that I have requested.

Trop, you can just COMMISSION yourself!

The same goes for anyone else who vouches for him!

I'm not sure how this thread escalated from discussing the merits of requests to pressuring LTIan to pay for maps, but I really wish it hadn't. Can't we just make maps for the fun of it?

Well that is not at all what I expected.  But it certainly has hints of that one lady that came in here demanding Mario maps.  You can't complain about something you're getting for free, even though I see a lot of people do.  What will be will be I guess.

LTIan, I don't know what price Tropicon quoted you for the Road Runner: Death Valley Rally maps - assuming you had discussed it at any length - but I'm not sure that it warrants such a negative response.

Now I'm not necessarily vouching for Tropicon here as I don't even know what his price is for that.  And not knowing how difficult the game is to map I can't comment on that specifically, but I would imagine it's probably not simply an otherwise-impossibility that can only be overcome by being paid for.

Revned, you're right, maps can be and have been made for the fun of it.  Some maps may never get mapped though, and if commissions adds the motivation for a mapper to figure out how, and if the requestor is willing to pay, then I don't think that's so wrong.

Because remember, it's commission, not ransom.  If someone can find a way to map it and does so, and submits it with no expectation of money - as every map so far has been, as far as I know, then great!

If Tropicon is extra-motivated by money, and a requestor is willing to pay that amount, I see no problem with that.  Artists do that all the time.  And we can debate whether or not stitching screenshots together is the same as paying for the individual and unique talents of a traditional artist, but the point is that no one can really stop any transaction between two people that are happy with that arrangement.

Tropicon is accepting commissioned requests on his deviantArt page, as he said, and so if the thought of money changing hands just for maps tarnishes VGMaps.com, then I won't comment on it more than necessary moving forward.

---

However, we still have the (apparent) problem of people making requests - or maybe more accurately, making requests with too much expectation, or too little understanding/appreciation of the work involved.  What now?  Any suggestions?

I'm still reluctant to close it down totally.  It doesn't feel like it's enough of a spammish annoyance, it's not like requests show up every day.

How about this...would a stickied topic telling people of common-sense guidelines and not-so-common-sense explanations of the challenges involved help at all, do you think?  Like a "Things to consider before you request..." sort of topic?  Or is that weaksauce?  Would be better than not having anything at all, though, right?

If Tropicon wants to try to collect commissions, then so be it. But this thread (plus the other) went from zero to "has LTIan paid up yet?" in no time at all. Begging for money is as bad, or worse, than begging for maps.

For what it's worth, I think people pretty much ignore stickied threads before posting, as a rule. I'd lean towards closing the board, but I'd also be completely fine with just leaving things as they are. Just don't push things the other direction :)

I never made LTIan any kind of quote, he never even asked, there was no discussion other then what you've seen here.  I never meant to pressure anybody into anything.  All I'm saying is if people want maps, and you don't want to hear about how they want maps, then they can commission them like any art, and it never has to bother you.

I guess if you truly want a request spam free environment you could rig the boards for mappers only.  That would probably stop all requesters.

Let me make this clear: "I do not commission people with money!"

Believe me, I can't pay Trop with money even if I wanted to. But unfortunately, my dad has CONFISCATED my bank card, so I cannot make any sort of money-paid commission!

Tropicon is accepting commissioned requests on his deviantArt page, as he said, and so if the thought of money changing hands just for maps tarnishes VGMaps.com, then I won't comment on it more than necessary moving forward.

Until I can pay off my Student Loan in its entirety, I cannot regain control of my Dollar Bank Account. Therefore, I cannot commission people.

I do not make ransoms. Believe me, I am not a law-breaking villain.

I am still not going to pay Trop any sort of money for any maps to ripped. My requests can stay on that list for as long as it takes.

A sticky topic would be a good idea. Though I would have it called: "The Rules and Regulations of Requesting", that would help.

Well, guess I still have to say something...

LTIan, I think you've misinterpreted my verbage.  When I said "it's commission, not ransom", I meant it like someone could be paying Tropicon for the service of mapping a game (which would be commission), not that Tropicon is the only one holding these maps and that he's making us pay to release them (which would be ransom).  The latter certainly seems more like a bad thing.  I'm making the point that I really don't think Tropicon (or anyone offering paid services) is doing that.  And I'm certainly not implying that you, LTIan, or anyone else on the paying end of this transaction is doing any "ransoming" or anything wrong, so I'm not sure where you're getting that I'm calling you some kind of "law-breaking villain"...certainly not my intention.

Sorry to hear about your money issues, LTIan, though as I've learned from work (actual career work) and working with being sure that contracted truckers are properly getting paid, I found it's best not to question how anyone handles their money, but we weren't looking for you to share details about your life so don't feel pressured to do so.  You can if you want to, I suppose, but don't feel like you are expected to.  You don't have to justify your position that you're against commissions.  I may have thought your response (in bold red letters) when Tropicon said he wanted actual money instead of deviantArt points was surprisingly negative but I didn't mean to imply that you're wrong for thinking so.  Sorry about that.  I still would've thought you and Tropicon would have at least talked about a specific number, but if you're against or unable to spend any amount, even if it was like a dollar, then I guess that's where you're coming from.  And you're probably not the only one.

I still don't see the harm if Tropicon wants to do commissions and if people are willing to pay him.  He'll make and manage those deals himself elsewhere.  VGMaps.com will continue to have maps submitted without expectation of payment, and free to view for all, so don't you worry.

And one day, someone somewhere may be able to map Death Valley Rally...

Specifically with Zelda, Wind Waker and Skyward Sword haven't been done. I would like to see a fully fleshed out Twilight Princess (GCN/Wii U preferably), all in likeness to the Ocarina of Time maps.

Trop, if you still want to maintain the first post in this topic, I wonder if there's any benefit to posting when it was requested and by whom and if anybody seconds those requests.  And in some cases maybe some relevant notes (like if there's something technical that makes a particular game challenging to map).  I guess I just think that original post can be more helpful with a bit more info, rather than merely a consolidation of this board's topics.
