Title: Request: Phantom 2040 (SNES or Genesis)
Post by: ReyVGM on December 02, 2013, 12:55:43 pm
I recently discovered this game after reading it has like 20 possible endings (they are probably just variations).

Anyway, after trying the game I noticed it's really good! It has non-linear levels and tight controls. I am going to try to get all the endings since no one has done so yet, but to make things easier, I would love if someone could map this game. There are only 7 levels, so it shouldn't be something out of the ordinary for more experienced mappers.

The SNES version is preferred, but if Genesis is your thing, then that one would work too.

Thanks in advance!

Just the other day I randomly went to VGMuseum.com (http://www.vgmuseum.com) which is funny because I haven't been there for like a year or two and thought updates had totally stopped.  To my surprise it's alive again!

Might be why as I was reading your post, before seeing who it was from, I was literally thinking, "hmm, wonder if Rey from VGMuseum has gotten all the endings yet; this guy should first ask him".

But since you are him, I guess you would know what endings VGMuseum does or doesn't have, or doesn't have yet.  :P

Haha, yeah it's kind of alive. I have a lot of stuff to post, it's just that I barely have time anymore to do the things I like to do :(

So yeah, I'm requesting the maps to see if it would be easier for me to get all the endings. I'm sure there are people interested in seeing them :P

Got a camera control code, some other codes.  Difficulty assess puts mapping at about medium.  Need a jump code...  Everything's looking good, how vast is this game?

Trop to the rescue!

Haven't played it yet, but it only has 7 levels. But there are lots of choices to be made in the levels, don't know if that means that you only get access to certain parts of the levels depending on your actions though.

The level structure appears to change based on your choice.

I guess that's bad?

Well it could mean remapping each level several times.  Clever on the part of the designers, this allows them to make a huge game without making a huge game.  I'll try to hammer out a whole level next to see how far I can push it.

Alright, let's see how it turns out then :)

Here's the basic room look.  So everything in this game really is intertwined.  Mapping comes out strange because of that since you've got the same rooms several times and level borders blend together.  For now I'll just map what I run over and not worry about correct order.  That's going to slow things down though since it means mapping the game at least twice.  So many uncooperative projects lately.

Looks good so far! Thanks for doing this... again :P

So as if things weren't going slowly enough on this project I'm putting it on hold.  The difficulty combined with the sheer amount of work required to map out each single are is huge.  I only have about four so far and this thing is just killing me.  Also did you want these maps marked?

Actually played a little further into the game, the whole thing has a metroidvania vibe.  So it turns out a lot of areas have dual forms, that would mean I'd set up maps by setting all forms of each area in their own image, to spite the fact that they all seem to be connected regardless of the world map.  Speaking of which a world map might be better for your needs but I've only done a little research into that so far.  Areas and area access change heavily based on what you do when and each area is a quagmire of pathways and pickups.  I'm surprised this game has no save feature for it's complexity.

Looks like a real nightmare. And I thought some of my projects gave me a hard time...

A walk through walls code would make things go smoother but I've stuck my hand out enough over at the hacking site and I still haven't delivered on several of the other projects I promised them.  I wouldn't be held up if I could zoom around the screen instead of constantly patching screenshot gaps.

Yikes, that sounds hard... sorry that I even requested this game :(

If you are talking about gamehacking, let me ask if someone would do the WTW code for me.

Ooo, yes!  Then I'll look innocent.  Ask them for a super jump code too, I'm tired of grappling around.  This game is actually set up in a "modify one area to enter another" fashion with a lot of "oops you blew that place up so now you can't go back" stuff.  So it's more like Metroid Fusion then Super Metroid.

So this week was essentially a full game test. Results:
Levels are big and bad, I can only really map a normal one and maybe a few small ones per day.
Most levels don't fight too hard.  There are few animations and little color correction.  I've left out backgrounds for now.
All levels will have to be remapped to some degree since I've been leaving stuff out.
Some areas seem to have as many as 5 variations or sub areas.
Overall this project will be no smaller then DKC2 was.  I should give credit to the designers for making a truly expansive game at the very least.

So how's this gonna go?  Well I'll make basic raw maps before anything else.  This should take a while.  In the meantime I'll post the raws here so you can get started exploring the game and testing.  Take notes of stuff you need or discoveries you find and post them here so I know where to go next.  Or how to access special areas, if a map changes, or I just messed it up.

So after much retooling here's an example of how they'll look.  Each area is named and exits are marked.  Non hidden items are marked and so are bosses.  Barriers, like walls and locked doors, will be present as you run into them unless they are triggered in some special way like a boss death.  Is this what you were looking for?

Oops. looks like I'm going to have show hidden items too.  Some switches are hidden in walls.

Now I feel bad for requesting this :(

It looks like it's being a lot of trouble to map.

Well I'm too far in to quit now.  So how did you like the last example?  The only other thing I can think of might be item outlines or something?  Here's total progress so far:

Does anybody want to help me with this?  I've got most of maps already made they just need to be marked up.  I'll manufacture all the sprites, backgrounds, and make any remaining raw maps needed too.  You'd only have to explore and put items in place.

Notes:
On longer marking boss item drops as they change depending on what order bosses are killed in.
Area exits/entrances will need number or letter id's.  For example: University A, Space Port D, Ghost Jungle 2A.
Also some areas will just need names as the game fails to name every individual place.

Well I'm nearly done with the raws.  Only two more maps and I'll have all known areas complete.  Of course I'm sure there are hidden ones somewhere.  The only thing to do now is mark them up.

Maps look great so far.

I'll play the game once they are done and I'll let you know if there are any other hidden areas.

I need a easy project so this is on hold until I finish Dual Orb 2.  In the mean time could you request a walk through walls code for Magical Starsign or Magical Vacation at gamehacking?  I'd love to help eishiya finish this project:

Hoo. Phantom 2040... I tried tackling this game a while back to identify SPCs we ripped from it via a music modifier code... Even following an FAQ to the letter, I got hopelessly lost really quickly, putting a swift end to *that* project. It's quite the beast. I can't even imagine trying to *map* it, too...

Well technically it's already done, fifteen maps in all.  They just need to be marked.  I wondered why I couldn't find the SPC set at SNESMusic.  There's not really that many songs in the game.

D O N E.  God, this took three months but it's finally done.  Well there ya go Ray, I'm sure it's still missing something  but everything else is more or less there.  You should be able to navigate the game now without resistance.  *phew*
