Title: herc's adventure and more
Post by: GHS on February 04, 2016, 05:55:41 pm
Right now I'm working on PS1 Herc's adventure, arcade magical cat adventure, NES The Adventure of Valkyrie(only the over world map for now), C64 knight 'n' grail, SNES popfulmail and GEN/MD Ys3.
I get bored if I only focus on one game. Herc's adventure looks like it might go close to 30k x 30k. I just hope I can accomplish it.

Is anyone ells working on any of these games on this list?

30,000 x 30,000 pixels!? You're either courageous or insane... Maybe both, which is best when mapping a game! Good luck for all of these :)

30k sounds about right.  One thing to watch out for in herc's adventure is fading light.  When you near the underworld entrance areas in the north northwest the pallet fades from brown to purple.  You'll have to decide if you want use one color, both, or some kind of transition.  Mapping the ocean will be a pain in the ass too.  popfulmail maps are coming out gorgeous by the way.

Thanks for the enthusiasm. Yes, Herc's Adventure will be difficult. I'm using PSX1.13 (the only one I know of for more accurate emulation) but it has no input for cheats. Can anyone suggest anything better? any tools?

PS: I have finished with ladystalker but I am waiting for the original art work scans (by the same person that scanned the landstalker art) to place on the maps, also I cant take credit alone for lady stalker. If it wasent for my brother who made the cheat codes to helped me map it It would have never been done.

good news, looks like it will not be close to 30k but over 12k to 15k ress but it will most likely be over 100mb in size.

I have mostly finished with H.A. but there are a lot of un-mapped black areas that I cant get to. I am using PSX1.13

I have finished with Hercs Adventure and its 121MB in size.
this project was not easy. I am glad I did it because I dont think anyone ells would have.
the size of the file made me switch to a corei7 2.4 with 12 GB ram.
this is the biggest size single map and first clean complete PS1 map I have done.
thanks to my brother and Trop for helping me complete it.

It looks fantastic.  It's funny how small each area looks when it's shown side by side with all the rest.  This is a mapping gem.

After PNGGauntlet, it comes out to 91.5 MB.  Shaved off like a quarter of the original size, but still large.  I just confirmed that it is now the largest map on VGMaps.com in terms of filesize!

If you were curious, Zerker's map of Britannia from Ultima VII: The Black Gates (PC) is the previous holder of that title at 89.0 MB.

I'll be interested to see what you do with the Lava Zone in Ys3 when you get around to it. I mapped the SNES version a year ago and had to leave most of the backgrounds black since they don't loop as well as the other areas. Even the ones i did keep still look weird and should have just been left out.

I just took a look at that area with a Longplay video and yeah, I hate those static non-scrolling backgrounds the most. You *can* sometimes turn them into a repeating pattern with some clever (or at least, acceptable) tile editing if you're not too fixated on absolute graphical authenticity.

Looking at your map of the area dark_lord_zagato, I think it was the right decision to retain the background for those horizontal areas. I think you could assemble something that works for the rooms where you left it blank but you'd have to be creative for those large rooms with a sloped ground.
