Title: Lyle in Cube Sector (PC)
Post by: RT 55J on November 10, 2006, 01:54:48 pm
Crazy Metroid-style platformer: http://www.sitesled.com/members/bogo/lyle.html

I've already have all the rooms mapped out (except the final area). All I need to do now is fix the paralax backgrounds, and do a couple other trival things.

Here's couple maps for you to look at:

Looks like an interesting game, reminds me of the good old days of Apogee shareware platformers. Looking foward to seeing the final maps :)

Here's another map to look at:

Here's the map I'm using to track my progress. It obviously contains massive spoilers. Blue areas are finished and black areas are unfinished:

I tried making a map of the final area yesterday. Unfortunately, I somehow lost 24 pixels (1.5 tiles) along the way. Grrr...

Here's the finished in-game map:

And here's a WIP of the 120% more detailed and more Zeric-y map I'm working on:

Hey, what's up.

I'm the author of russian translation of this game, and currently I'm thinking of making a port of it, to the current generation consoles. I wonder if those maps are available in any state these days, could help a lot!

Hello Xitilon! I was actually thinking about this project recently.

I made maps of nearly every room, but I never cleaned up the images or assembled them together.

I think I still have all the images on my computer. When I get home from work I will upload them to Imgur.

The source for this game was released in 2015. I was going to use that to finish this project, but haven't done that yet.

Here are the goods:

Apparently I was farther along in this project than I remembered.

Wow. Thank you very much, this is super helpful! Without this map, I was going to re-map the levels by watching a letsplay video.

If everything goes well, people can expect this game on one (or maybe several) current-gen consoles, and I'll get you a free activation code then!

Also, how'd you write those placeholder digits and numbers? They seem to be tile-ish for some reason, and it looks interesting.

IIRC I wrote those digits with the default pencil tool in MS Paint while zoomed out.

Good luck on porting this. I hope Nic DeStefano gives you his blessing if he hasn't already.

And I thought you were using some fancy auto-tiling program, so that you draw 16x16 line segments just by moving on the 16x16 grid, hah.

Well, we're discussing this with Nic currently.

Also there's a Sega MegaDrive port going on, not by me: https://mikejmoffitt.itch.io/lics-md

RT 55J, is this an official submission, and what are the names of the areas?

Give it a couple weeks. I have a few ideas I might try to clean up or re-rip the remaining rooms. If I don't announce any progress by the end of the month, you could upload the big one under the name "Cube Sector (WIP)".

Also, it looks like the exact map I just posted here is in the github repository for the Genesis port under /docs/map_png/ (https://github.com/Mikejmoffitt/LICS/tree/master/docs/map_png). IIRC I gave it to that fellow when I found out he was making it (and noticed he had been referencing maps from this very thread too!).

It's funny how things work out.

Looks like we're back in business:

If my old spreadsheet is accurate, I have 14 more rooms before the main map is done.

Hi again, everyone!

Me and my friend Sparkster1993 have done this thing which I'd call a "foreground tiles map", which isn't an image file, but an XML map for use with Tiled editor ( https://www.mapeditor.org ).

It can be exported to a variety of formats like CSV, JSON, JS, LUA and even GameMaker Room resource files, in order to convert it to actual game objects in any new game, fan-game or anything. I wonder if this can be hosted at VGMaps, does it make sense?

Here are the files: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vaZFLq-mkG7evIKtkJJJxWJJ5tLk_FCO/view?usp=sharing

It doesn't include enemies, bosses or backgrounds. Only foreground floor, walls, ceilings and platforms. I don't think we'll continue working on it though, as Nic said he's more keen on a MegaDrive port than the one I intended to make for current-gen consoles from scratch. Anyway, good luck to everyone!

Huge Milestone: All rooms in the main area have been mapped.

TODO:
- Place Items
- Very minor cleanup in a couple rooms
- Verify if the elevator room misalignment is indeed correct (this bothers me a lot)
- Make a map of the final area
- Make it all presentable

Placed all the items, did some minor clean up, verified that the elevator misalignment was my fault, and it's now somewhat presentable.

Before I formally submit this, does anybody have any comments on the presentation? Is the grid (which is supposed to evoke the pause screen) too distracting?

https://i.imgur.com/pLorSyK.png (https://i.imgur.com/pLorSyK.png)

...I just noticed the extra blank screen's worth of transparent space along the bottom and right side of the map. If nothing else, I'll have to fix that before making a proper submission.

Still need to do the final area.

Great work! Not sure what to add. As always with a Metroid-style full maps, it's kind of insighful to have a look at everything in the game at once. And the grid is just fine, IMHO.

I'm considering this done for now, barring any major oversight on my part:

Still need to do the final area.

I just realized that more time has elapsed between when I made this thread and the present day than had elapsed between the 1993 release of Jetpack for MS-DOS and when I mapped it in 2006.

I feel old.

Final area assembled:

Project is officially done.

I did notice, comparing my old work to my current work, that the background palettes in most rooms are very subtly different. I'm not sure if this is a legitimate version difference between releases or just a quirk of my current or old setup. Either way, I just tried to make sure each room was consistent with itself. Auditing and potentially redoing every single room might be necessary if I want 100% consistency/accuracy, but I don't feel like it's worth the labor that would entail.

Are you submitting these?  What are the names of these areas?
Title: Re: Lyle in Cube Sector (PC)

Yeah, consider this a submission.

The big one is just "Cube Sector", and the smaller one I would just call "Cube Sector - Final Area."

I might make a mini-map later, but that's not really a priority for me right now.

Thanks, they're up now (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/PC/index.htm#LyleInCubeSector)!

If you wanted to make the palettes consistent, it might not actually be that hard.  Since there are fewer than 256 colours, it should be easy enough to save a palette file from Paint Shop Pro, and just use Notepad or any text editor to tweak and match RGB values that are close, and then apply them.
