Title: Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES)
Post by: Eggz on April 24, 2006, 05:12:20 pm
I've been waiting for this section of the boards to be back up before I brought this post out again.

I've finally managed to get a complte map all put together; the way the gameplay pans out, the first town you go to can't be properly mapped until about a third of the way through the game since some areas are blocked by NPCs and the shops aren't selling anything. But Astoris, before the attack is complete. I should have it after the attack complete soon, and Rabite Forest is about halfway done.

Lakeshore Village Astoria - Before

(Let's see if the HTML will work...)

I'm taking my time right now on the maps; school might only be finishing in two months, but final tasks are rearing their heads around now, and grad planning is taking time from everything.

Hey guys, I'm back!

I've been on a sort of hiatus for the last year or so; university was much more stressful than I had anticipated. But first year is all done, and I'm off for the summer.

Going is going to be slow, as usual, since i work weekdays, but I plan and logging a few hours a week during the evenings, and weekends. I'm not much farther than i was when I left originally, but hopefully that will change bit by bit.

Hey Eggz, nice to know you weren't gone for good :) I'm curious to know just how far along you are with this. Can you give us some kind of approximate percentage?

Welcome back, Eggz!  I'll look forward to see your maps.

Well I wasn't kidding when I said I wasn't much farther than I was when I left. I'm half done the Cave of Waterfalls, and working on Wendel Holy City.

So percentage wise... about 2% maybe? It's still a horribly daunting project, but I'm determined to get back into it guns a'blazing.

Well, I'm personally fine. I also haven't released any maps of importance since you've been gone. The only project I did a good amount of work on eventually stalled for a while, and someone else released it in the meantime, namely Zeric from whom I had sort of stolen the project to begin with. Poetic justice for ya ;)

As for my current project, Sonic CD, that went sour when my hard drive crashed and I lost about a week of work plus every ROM and ISO I had. I should be starting again on it but the lost maps will probably be pushed back for later. Unless I decide to swallow the pill and try to finally finish Metroid Fusion before someone else does.

Anyway, nice to see you back and I'm eager to see more maps from you.

Well hey everyone, I have some progress to update here

Holy City Wendel (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/57542721/)

So I managed to crank this one out in about 4 hours; from start of mapping to being posted here.

Said I would get some stuff done, haha.

To create a link, you use the < link > and </ link > tags without the spaces, though since you're still considered a "New User" by the board, you probably don't have that option yet.

Hey all. Well after another year (or close to) of haitus, I've taken this project off the shelf and working on it again. Got another map done, and want opinions to see if there's anything I should tweak before sending it in.

Let me know what you think. I'll be lurking here and there more often with WIPs from now on.

Personally, I think it would be better if the red arrows weren't on top of the graphics. They would be less interfering if they were only in the dark regions between rooms.

Come on, Jon, give people hyperlinks and image capabilities. How many users have commented on it? No one seems to know/care that it's an "earned" thing, they just mention it like it's a forum bug.

The arrows being on top of the graphics was never mentioned in regard to some of the other maps I've made and submitted for the game. I want to try and keep a certain level of consistency between all the maps for the game, and this way it makes it really obvious which door leads where. If it really that much of a distraction, I'll move them, but I want some more feedback before I go and redo all the maps again.

And I know it's not a bug, Revned; I've been on and off these boards for the last two years. I just don't seem to be consistent enough to actually earn the link thing.

There's nothing wrong with it; it's just personal preference. I understand wanting to be consistent, I guess I never noticed/mentioned it before.

That's one problem I have  with the gold system: even users who have been here for a long time can't post links...

Here's another WIP, Cave of Waterfalls

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o148/friedeggz/SD3%20Maps/CaveofWaterfalls.png

Caves are the really tough part of this game. I had to do a lot of editing to make the different screens flow into each other and to clean up awkward looking sharp edges. The small arrows here are where the different screens didn't touch or had hidden passages, or there was just no way to properly connect them.

What I've noticed as a downside to playing a game on multiple save files to be able to map everything is that when you go to save one file, you can accidentally overwrite another one of the save files. And when it's a decent ways into the game (5 hours or so), you need to go back and play it all again until you get back to where you are. I just hope that I don't do it again when I get to the 20 hour mark, or the 30 hour mark. >_<

On the upside, I've gotten a few more areas fully mapped out (which I'll submit later this week), and another few half-mapped, but I've reached that point in all RPGs where you get sent on circular quests before you can really move forward. I'll let you know when I've moved on past those.

So I recently found a hack-code that actually allows walk through walls in the game, a code which didn't exist before.

Great tool to help map the rest of the game that's left (which is still the majority).

...Of course now that also means I need to go back and redo basically all my maps.... *sigh* At least I wasn't that far into the game. So most previously submitted maps will have to have corrected maps submitted later, with a bigger file-size for the most part.

I've recently started maping this game again, butmI've encountered a snag; I've recently gotten a new laptop and laptop's nowadays only come with Vista. Problem is my SNES emulator (snes9xw) won't run with the cheats on. As in, when the cheats are active, when I move to a new screen the emulator resets the game. The point that I'm at the game now though almost demands the cheats.

Any suggestions?

I don't know very much about Vista apart from the fact they have in my opinion messed up Word and Excel, but if you want to save yourself from hassle and trouble trying to get cheats to work with programming instructions, you may wish to switch from the snes9xw emulator to Zsnesw142. I've never failed my mapping with the Zsnesw142, nor have I ever used any cheats. I don't like or trust Windows Vista one bit, cos it wipes out the compatibilty for DOS and old games entirely.

I didn't really have much choice when it came down to Vista. New laptops comes exclusively with Vista, and if I formatted and loaded XP on my own I void my warranty and service agreement. And I *needed* a laptop for the coming school year.

I'll try out the Zsnesw142, but as for the cheats I use to help with my mapping, it's a "walk through walls cheat" so I can see the rest of the area that's not on the playable path but still part of the zone... it's basically a necessity now that I've found it. Stupid ista for not letting it work properly...

It seems nobody update these maps for a long time.So I decide to finish them.

I ripped 39/57 maps during last 2 weeks. Here are the maps which I ripped.

Actually there are some bugs in Eggz's maps. For example, player will go back "Molebear Highlands" and find the entrance of "Gemstone Valley Dorian" after they came the 1st time. But Eggz's maps cuts the road.

xyzbilliu, these look great!  Thanks for the submission!  I'm assuming it's a submission.  Email or PM me with the email address you'd like me to credit you by.

So now we've got Final Fantasy Adventure (Seiken Densetsu) and soon I'll put up xyzbilliu's Seiken Densetsu 3 (J)...  (We even have Secret Of Evermore.)  Apparently a complete Secret Of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) continues to elude us...  :P

Don't get me wrong, I am appreciative of the maps we do have, and of this series, and of A. Lurker's partial Secret Of Mana maps.  I just find it a little odd that what should be the most popular game in the series hasn't been fully mapped yet.  Imagine if someone mapped nearly all of the Mega Man series but didn't map Mega Man II...  Or the Metroid series but not Super Metroid...hey, wait a second...  >_>

Well, xyzbilliu's Seiken Densetsu 3 (J) maps are now up...at least the ones that Eggz didn't do.

I'm at a loss as to what to do with the earlier maps - to put up xyzbilliu's or to keep Eggz's.  I don't want to have both, but I'll need to have one, of course.  xyzbilliu's would be consistent with the rest of the maps.  But Eggz's has item listings in towns, and I must say, extending things like trees beyond the edge of the screen is a nice touch (see Rabite Forest as an example).  I may have to think about this for a while.

I just want to replace Eggz's "Molebear Highlands" because he make mistake when drawing the trees beyond the edge.

And Eggz did not rip the harbor of Free City Maia.

If the maps are at the same quality, I would keep the ones with labels as long as they are ascetically pleasing.

On a side note, I do plan on making labeled maps showing all item and enemy locations for Secret of Mana (SD2) at some point in the future.  I'm currently going through a NES mapping phase, but at some point when I go back to mapping SNES games I plan on doing that one.
