Title: It's MAR10 today. So what Mario game are you playing or replaying?
Post by: JonLeung on March 10, 2007, 09:43:49 am
I just downloaded Super Mario World (Super NES, from the Wii Virtual Console) this morning.  And finished it in one sitting by going through Star World.  Whee!

What are you playing?  And don't tell me you don't celebrate MAR10!

Cheater!  :P

Try for all 96 exits.  It gets really fun when you are trying get all of the exits in the Forest of Illusion.  It can be a little hard to remember which exits you have found.  (Some of the paths overlap.)

I think I'll petition the government to change this month to Metrutle or Vansletuk or something, just to annoy you.

Oh, missed it. But I watched a documentation about video games that day. And of course Mario was in it, so at least I saw Mario's appearance on that special day :)

Metrutle sounds very strange, I would be more than suprised when you get this renaming petition through.

I took me a while to figure out that March 10th -> MAR10 -> MARIO.

Man, you guys like countdowns don't you?  First Christmas, then Brawl, now MAR10...what next?

Well, this topic started last year...

The countdown to Brawl and MAR10 will be the same for me, probably.  Super Smash Bros. Brawl is supposed to come out on Mar. 9, but the guy at EB Games said it'll be a day later in Canada (doesn't surprise me, it's happened before) so the Mario game I'll be playing on MAR10 will very likely be that!

I'll probably replay this if I can get it to work in my computer.

Well, it's MAR10 again!  So what are you playing?

If I have time tonight, I'll probably finish The Subspace Emissary mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  It doesn't star only Mario, but he IS in it...  >_>

I finished it. The last level was really long and got boring. The final boss is pretty hard too. But, whatever, I have Sonic now.

I won't have time to seriously play games today, but if all else fails, maybe I'll put up some Super Mario RPG maps from Peardian.

(I played over an hour of Metroid: Zero Mission yesterday while waiting at the Mazda dealership since my vehicle was getting an oil change and tune-up; maybe I should've played some Mario then to make up for today.)

I really should play some Super Paper Mario for the occasion. I stopped playing in the middle of Chapter 3, then just never got back to it.

(I've got as many games that I've stopped playing half-way through than games I've stopped mapping half-way through. In other words, a *lot*)

I am playing "Mario & Luigi Partners in Time". This particular copy and version is the most compatible I could get to play with DeSmuME. Except I cannot save and the combat graphics are wrong, but now that I have the best version I could find, I've managed to make a couple of high quality maps, I hope to submit any time.

You should!  I really liked Super Paper Mario.  Finished it on a rental, and got everything, even all the rare cards and etc.  There was enough time on the rental for my brother to play his own file from start to finish, though he didn't get everything.

Some people think there's too much story to read in Super Paper Mario.  I think it's nice to have some more story in the Mario games that I wouldn't complain about that!

Partners In Time is good too.  I'm looking forward to Mario & Luigi 3, where you can play as Bowser!  Though apparently Mario & Luigi spend most of the game in Bowser's body, from the looks of it.

I don't like the Mario RPG series, but I got Super Paper Mario anyway. Same as with Terra, I played a few chapters and then stopped. I hated having to go back to town and find all the levels; I just wanted to play.

I have the Paper Mario for Gamecube, but only played it enough to make sure the disc worked.  It was something I bought used.  Should get around to playing it one of these days.

Does anyone else think it looks like Mario is doing a Nazi salute when he raises his arm?

Not really, but his tiny dot-like eyes and his tendency to point at himself and raise his hand like a school kid do make him look a bit dumb :)

Super Paper Mario is the only Paper Mario game I was ever interested in for precisely the reason most people feel it's the weakest of the series: it's more of an action/adventure instead of an RPG, a genre I really dislike the mechanics of.

*is ashamed at Revned and TerraEsperZ*

Super Mario RPG is great.  It introduced the concept of doing more damage or defending yourself with well-timed button presses, and for that reason alone is not as sedentary as other select-your-move RPGs.  Not only that, it's clearly the best Nintendo/Square collaboration.  Ever.  Mario Hoops 3-on-3 (which features Final Fantasy characters) isn't on the same level.  Having Peach and Bowser as playable characters and opening up the universe of Mario beyond the Mushroom Kingdom makes it awesome.

The Mario & Luigi games and the Paper Mario games have their unique quirks for mixing the RPG genre with the universe of Mario.  While Super Paper Mario has its moments, you're missing out by not playing the other ones.  :P

Though, not to be a hypocrite, I suppose there are some genres I can't handle, that even a mix of Mario can't improve.  Super Mario Sluggers was dreadful...

Maybe we'd better end the RPG-hating talk before I find out that one of you guys didn't play Chrono Trigger.  Then I'll really flip out!  0_0

I like very few turn-based RPGs. Chrono Trigger, FF1, old school Pokemon, and, uh... that's about it. They usually move way too slow for me, especially the long, usually boring story sequences.

The only JRPG I have played since the days of my old NES was Final Fantasy VI (over a decade ago already), and I held on because I loved the story, the characters and the designs. But even I'm not sure I'd tolerate doing it again without cheating in some way. I also don't have fond memories of battling slimes in Dragon Warrior just so I could become strong enough to cross that damn bridge. You want to make me hate a game? Force me to do some level-grinding, and you'll succeed admirably. It's just so tedious, unless it happens naturally while making your way through the game like all three GBA Castlevanias.

As for Chrono Trigger (and possibly the recently translated Mother 3 thanks to all the good reviews from the 61 Frames Per Second blog), I too hope to play one day, but only because of the awesome overall quality of those games and not for the actual battle systems.

I much prefer RPG games that are closer to the mechanics of the PnP ones like Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Fallout 1 and 2 and Planescape: Torment (all games I hope to play from start to finish one day). Although there's a lot of fighting to do in those, you don't get any XP from it unless said death allows you to complete a quest. Rather, you get points from solving problems and quests, and you get more when you use a creative solution, and you don't climb in levels but improve individual stats using those hard-earned XP.

Darn, I only had time to boot up an already-existing save file on Super Mario World on the Wii Virtual Console (which apparently, according to the first post, I downloaded three years ago today) and just defeat Bowser using the Back Door.  Lame.  Ah, well, there's a MAR10 every year.

I did try a tiny bit of New Super Mario Bros. Wii on my own today, and despite other players getting in the way in multiplayer, you're less likely to die all at once.  Me and my brother did everything in the game already though, except we never unlocked any of the hint movies.  I finished Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story semi-recently (even with the pointless grinding up to Level 40 which wasn't worth it), so I guess we just have to look forward to Super Mario Galaxy 2.

As a total coincidence (seriously), I actually took out Super Paper Mario again today (after only making it to Chapter 4 since around the same date last year!). I decided to star from the beginning since it's been too long for me to feel "into" the story.

Oh, and allow me to troll a little bit: I still feel that the average JRPG mechanics suck  ;)

I just finished playing "Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time". My favourite of all characters is the Koopa reporter Kylie, especially when she shows up, when you least expect it (especially when she impersonated a shroom in the mother ship). The comical moments are the hungry Yooba (Giant Dinosaur Robot) which fancies a snack of a Yoshi and the part where Prince Bowser calls Baby Mario & Luigi "Stinky Babies" for eating all the Yoshi cookies. It's a pity you can't explore any more than Princess Peach's castle in the Present. Also I miss the Lightning power, Fire power and other abilities the Mario Bros. had in Superstar Saga. When there's only one type of bean to find, it's not nearly as fun to scavenge for them as it is with four bean types. Anyway I'll be proceeding to Bowser's Inside Story when I get a chance.

It's MAR10 again!

I'll probably look at the history book and listen to the soundtrack CD that came with Super Mario All-Stars: Limited Edition which I bought last November but haven't really done anything with.  I saw my brother struggle through Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels...no thanks, that's just ridiculously difficult.  And I've played the other games on there to death already, obviously.  So if I do play anything, it'll probably be some Mario Sports Mix as that's the newest game so I haven't unlocked much stuff in it yet.

I have more recently had a full experience with "Mario & Luigi - Bowser's Inside Story". I should have known that the spore bloating problem was a mere side terror in the storyline and not the main threat to affect the Mushroom Kingdom. This RPG uses the stylus and microphone often, especially when Bowser's a giant. Although this is not the first game where Bowser is a playable character, this the first time I've ever seen his full capabilities and traits and I was comfortable playing with him in the gameplay, even if he didn't jump like the Mario Bros. It's nice to see Bowser in a good mood and get on good terms with the block characters. I never thought I'd see Fawful back in business after his failure two prequels ago. My favourite character of them all is Starlow the star sprite. The name he gave himself 'Chippy' is very cute on him. Such gratitude has the princess got for Bowser in the end, she sends him a cake. If a new RPG sequel ever appears, I would really like it if the kooplings would appear and become playable characters for the first time.

Mario Party 9 is more fun than I thought it would be.  I guess taking a few years off has made it feel fresh, not to mention the faster pacing by having everyone in a vehicle to reach a definite end.

I REALLY should get back to Mario Kart 7.  It's pretty much the only 3DS game I can easily play with my B button kind of messed up (as if I ever brake)...I'm getting someone to fix it soon.

Funny how the last post was about getting my 3DS fixed.  Last year I sent it in to Nintendo just shy of the one-year warranty being over, to get the B button fixed, and they sent me a new 3DS, and I got to enjoy the then-new Kid Icarus: Uprising on it.  I actually just sent it in again (since the replacement also came with a one-year warranty, which this is now just shy of) because of lack of audio on the left side when using earphones.

So yes, I am waiting for my 3DS again, though technically this is the next one.  A new 3DS each year...at least it's free.

It is MAR10 day again, but once again I'm busy today...if only I had my 3DS I'd play a bit of Mario Kart 7 - remember that?  I don't think I ever logged on to the VGMaps community at the same time as anyone else, though :( - so maybe I'll find time to go do some challenges in New Super Mario Bros. U, I've been meaning to get back to doing those.

I love the 3DS, RPGs, and Mario games, so it's a wonder to me why I haven't played Paper Mario: Sticker Star or Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.  Not to mention that I usually pick up games the first day or week...  Since I'm passing right by a Best Buy today anyway, maybe I should remedy this, on yet another MAR10 Day.

Best Buy didn't have either when I stopped by today after work.  In fact their 3DS shelves are really barren, which is odd.  Either this means Best Buy doesn't care for the 3DS anymore (they didn't even seem to have Bravely Default or the new Professor Layton game!), or (hopefully) more likely, now that the 3DS is doing so well, that they sold a bunch of games and since I think their shipments come in on Tuesdays they should hopefully replenish tomorrow.

So, since Chapters was nearby, I used a gift card from Christmas to buy two versions of Jenga...one of them is the Space Invaders Collectors' Edition Jenga, and the other is the Donkey Kong Collectors' Edition Jenga.  They can be played as "normal" Jenga, but they also have alternate rules to fit with their theme - I'm guessing the Donkey Kong one might somehow resemble the original Donkey Kong game.  I guess this is the Mario game I'm playing today...

(Funny how looking a little above that I see that a year ago I lament that Bravely Default wasn't available at Best Buy, and now, I'm currently playing it for the best ending (Chapter 7, lots of remixed boss battles)...  At what point did I start slipping?  It usually doesn't take me more than a year to finish a game, usually I finished games within the first week, or month of availability!  Though to be fair I picked up Bravely Default later and my brother was playing it first and I didn't seriously start it for quite a while because other games came up.  :P  It's still weird, though maybe I took too much pride in finishing games so soon in the first place.)

It's MAR10 again!  I don't know if I'll have time to play a Mario game when I get home, since I have a deacon's meeting tonight (yes, I very recently became a deacon at my church, taking time away from things like games).  Since I got a Virtual Boy last year, and have eight out of its library of fourteen games, maybe I'll play something obscure like Mario Clash.  I was never really good at it but then again I haven't played it much, might as well use today as an excuse to try again.

So I've had Super Mario Maker (Wii U) since the first week it came out.  (Not the first day, because I pre-ordered from Best Buy and had it delivered, but it didn't arrive on the first day, grrr, but whatever.)  The embarrassing thing is that I have not yet shared a single course!  Sure, I've played the game to get the Mystery Mushrooms and whatnot (though Expert is kicking my butt, I don't know about Super Expert), but I really should finish the stage I'm making and share it at some point.  Since it's #MAR10 again, if I have time to play games tonight, I'll try to finish and share my first stage!

You guys should also share any Super Mario Maker stage codes if you've made anything neat.

I almost forgot this year, but a tweet from Cartoon Network reminded me. Now that I've remembered, I'll... do something? I would be playing Super Mario Maker, too, but my back injury prevents me from sitting in front of the TV for more than a few minutes.

I don't I'll be playing anything Mario-related. If anything, I MIGHT get back to work on EO2U, who knows. Just dealing with some nasty stuff in real life at the moment in addition to the usual stuff that'd keep me from working on it.

This topic is now 10 years old!

I was busy making a couple of Nintendo Switch videos for YouTube (see here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EfALjsYnIM) and here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgi9crZ5a_4)), so I haven't even played as much of that as I would've liked.  But, there was no Mario game on launch day (not that it matters much with the highly-acclaimed The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild to fill my time), but that means we're not playing Super Mario Odyssey today.

Guess I can try to get some more black Coins in Super Mario Run; there's always that...

Oh, and I never did finish and share that stage I was working on in Super Mario Maker...  :(
Title: Re: It's MAR10 today. So what Mario game are you playing or replaying?

You know, I had no interest in buying a Switch just like I skipped on the Wii U. But damn if The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild isn't trying hard to change my mind. It very well might be what sells the system to me, just like Super Mario Galaxy sold me on the Wii. I'm just not completely sold on the hardware yet, with the sometimes unresponsive left joy-con, the rather short battery time, the uneven performances between the docked and portable configuration... I'm really hoping they release a revision somewhere down the line that will make it a "must" rather than a "maybe".

Going back to MAR10, I can't believe it's been almost a year since I've played a Mario game! I still haven't finished Super Mario 3D Land or New Super Mario Bros 1 and 2 but then again, I've given up hope of ever fully completing games like that. I'm just not good enough and don't have the time or patience to hang on long enough to become good enough. Also, holy crap! It's been almost three years since I "switched" to an HD TV and thus, three years since my Wii has been in the closet. I hope it's still working because some Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 goodness would be really fun right now.

The Wii U didn't get much third-party support when it was quickly obvious that people weren't catching on.  I could go on about it, but in keeping on the subject of Mario, Super Mario Bros. U isn't really much to write home about, and Super Luigi U is a remix but perhaps notable for being really hard if you play as Luigi (though ridiculously easy if you cheap out by playing as the invincible Nabbit).  I did enjoy Super Mario 3D World, and I will never forget the 6.5 hours (and something like 600 lives) that me and my brother spent one Saturday attempting, and finally completing, the insanely difficult "Champion's Road", the true final area.  Peach's floating and Rosalina's ability to attack are so crucial there...  But if you say you haven't even finished the incredibly easy Super Mario 3D Land, then maybe you wouldn't appreciate the challenge of that stage in 3D World...  However, it really is the "meatiest" Mario experience on the Wii U, though unless you have friends to appreciate the four-player simultaneous play in a 3D world (just a step up from the four-player simultaneous play in a 2D world in the "New" console series on Wii and Wii U), it may not feel like much of an evolution if you always expect bigger and better Mario experiences.

And as I mentioned, Super Mario Maker is great, but I never got around to making a stage, and the best stages by users often seem to be "automatic" ones, like Rube Goldberg machines, though indeed some are quite creative.

I regret to say that I never made time for Paper Mario: Color Splash, so I can't comment much on that, though I hear it's like Paper Mario: Sticker Star on the 3DS, which I also missed, in that neither are as RPGish as the previous games.

And the Mario sports games are meh, the newest Mario Tennis, whatever it was called, no one cared about, including myself, which is a shame as I generally at least enjoy them a bit.  Of course, there's Mario Kart 8 which is fun, but if you missed out on the Wii U but are considering a Switch, might as well get the upgraded Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, then, which includes the DLC and adds new modes, including a "real" Battle Mode (there was a Battle Mode in 8, but used the same tracks instead of arenas specific to that mode).

Looking forward to Super Mario Odyssey for sure, which even Nintendo officially acknowledges is more in the vein of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine (with its open hub worlds of Peach's Castle and Isle Delfino Resort respectively) than the somewhat fragmented Galaxy or "New" games.

Super Mario Galaxy (as well as its sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2 - which is pretty much just more of the first game). It had lots of the great 3D platforming from Super Mario 64 and featured a lot of traditional Mario fare, but in addition, it added in a cool gravity effects, had a simple yet effective control scheme, creative level designs, and a rich orchestral soundtrack.

Oh, wow. Thanks for that info!
Suddenly, I didn't know about Super Mario Galaxy 2 existence :D

I didn't forget that it was MAR10 Day this past Saturday, but I was too busy editing my Mega Man X: Maverick Challenge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Acyru-IYwrQ&t=8m34s) video for my "JonLeung1" YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/JonLeung1) that I only played my daily run of Super Mario Run on my iPad and briefly got a few Mario items in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp on my Android phone.  The tides are changing if the only Mario games I played on this day this year are apps!

Earlier this month, I got the new costume items in Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) and re-upped my Coin total back to 9999, but I haven't actually played any of the Luigi's Balloon World DLC yet.

Recently I've been watching fun Mario trivia videos at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gvQj0f6qdc&list=PLsKhkt5W1CllFnjX6a-VvD8mY2EVF-oZz . They're fun and have excellent points on how Bowser is NOT a villian, Mario is NOT a hero and Princess Peach is NOT a damsel in distress. Check em' out.

Happy MAR10 Day yet again!

I didn't pick up New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Switch) yet, not in a hurry since I played the original two games it is comprised of back on the Wii U.  I guess it could be neat to play as Toadette, but they didn't add much else, did they?  Also, I didn't pick up Super Mario Party (Switch), either.  What's wrong with me?

But my biggest Mario deficits are with the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario games.  I didn't play Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS), for some reason I just didn't get around to it, but that's the fourth Mario & Luigi game, and since then Nintendo has rereleased the first and third games with an extra story in each, so I wonder if at this point they might remake the fourth soon and I could just play that instead.  However, they skipped the second (Partners In Time) so there's no guarantee, and then should I be replaying those rereleases of Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story for their extra stories (Bowser's Minions & Bowser Jr.'s Journey) anyway?  And there's also the crossover with the Paper Mario series, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS) but I haven't played Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS) (even though I heard it isn't as good, I should at least try it).  And then there's also Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U).  I'm kind of a horrible Mario fan, like why haven't I made the time?  Especially considering that I really really loved the previous Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario games that I have played...

I mean I guess today I did play some Super Mario Run (mobile) and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (mobile) which features Mario items today, but I should find something more substantial to play.  There's still a good chunk of the day left still, so maybe I'll cruise the eShop and see what I'm missing.

What do you think about New SMB 2, for 3DS?
I started to play it today on Citra emulator, I think this game is simpler, than Wii U, and for this reason I liked 3DS-version more.

Yet another MAR10 Day...

See my previous response from last year, two posts ago.  Literally.  Word-for-word, it all applies this year.  Just shows that it's another year of failing to play new Mario stuff other than my daily dose of Super Mario Run (iOS).  I guess I have been playing Mario Kart Tour (Android) consistently, but today I haven't gotten to it yet.  I really should just pick up Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS) and Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS), maybe having them physically in front of me will entice me to start them.  And, yes, physically, I keep meaning to get to back to some games I got digitally (only because I had to use up points) and I keep forgetting I actually own Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) and Pikmin 3 (Wii U) and whatever else I have that was digital... Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge (Wii U).  I'm on board for digital stuff (my Steam library is a huge backlog too) but when it comes to consoles I must still be oldschool, as I keep forgetting that I have these.  I at least finished Pikmin 3 (not the best ending though) and DKC:TF might go unfinished because it's pretty hard... am I getting old?

Well I've played most of them but for the past weeks I've been playing Super Mario Galaxy a lot. Love this version. Soon will start to play 2nd part of it. Not  much to do with this virus around.

Happy MAR10 Day again!

I notice with some dismay that I still haven't made much progress in catching up on the Mario & Luigi series and the Paper Mario series despite my nagging intentions to.  You'd think it wouldn't be that hard but other things keep popping up.  Still... it's been a few years now!  I did buy Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS) a few months ago to make an attempt, but in not having time, I let my brother start it, who didn't get far in it and doesn't seem to care.  I heard it was not great compared to other Paper Mario games, but yikes, if it's not even interesting enough to even play more than a couple hours in...  As time is at a premium, and if I want to have any hope of catching up, I might have to be okay with cutting out some entries, even in a series like Mario.

Kind of hard to cut out the big mainstream Mario games but it becomes a tricky question with remakes.  I never did pick up New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Switch) because the Peachette addition probably wasn't a big enough draw.  But recently I did pick up the new Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch) so I think when I do have time to game today, the main thing will be opening that up.  Thankfully Bowser's Fury is accessible from the start, and is a short game, maybe five or six hours... not sure if I am going to do that all today, though I'd like to.  Should I just take a day and make a whole thing out of it?  I have doubts I will replay the Super Mario 3D World portion, especially if all it has are gameplay tweaks and bug fixes.  It was fun, and surely still is fun, but I don't know if I want to relive the frustration of the last stage, Champion's Road... that took over six and a half hours one Saturday for me and my brother to beat the first time around!  Maybe it'll be easier with four players, since having four players die simultaneously is hopefully less likely... but that's if there is any interest, once group gatherings are allowed again.  Most likely I'll just stick with Bowser's Fury...

I guess I did make time for a remake semi-recently.  A few months ago I picked up Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch) - and you should too, since I believe it gets discontinued at the end of this month - but I only made time to replay Super Mario 64.  Got it 100%, and thankfully some things were easier than I remember; Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride aren't as scary now but there were still some tense moments for sure, and the camera was still a cause for many lives lost.  I'd played all three when they were new and 100% completed them all, and though I legitimately like Super Mario Sunshine in a weird way, I don't think there's much priority to relive that and/or Super Mario Galaxy just yet.

Well, with that said, I guess I should bust Bowser's Fury out of the plastic wrap.  What are your MAR10 Day plans this year?

EDIT: So I made a little bit of time for games today, like 3.5 hours, and got 50/100 Cat Shines in Bowser's Fury which is enough for the (presumably) first ending.  Pretty good to finish a game in one sitting, haven't done that in a while.  Of course I'll play it through, but for today that is good enough, gotta get back to updating VGMaps.com and stuff like that...

Oh yeah, I randomly decided to buy the cartridge of Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World (Super NES) the other day.  Despite the Super NES being my favourite console, I have am embarrassingly low number of actual cartridges for it (especially compared to my other game libraries) mostly since I definitely rented many games in those years and didn't feel a need to buy games that I finished on rentals (which was actually almost always, even RPGs, surprisingly).  I don't know if I want to hardcore collect for it (though I have contributed quite a lot to my brother's NES collection) but I should at least get the major titles, and can't get much more major than five Mario games all in one!

Wow, no one has replied since last year... but for my own sake, it's interesting to see how I'm doing, as I have trouble making time for games.  I'm usually doing game-related stuff, but not playing for enjoyment as much as I'd like.

My progress report on the Mario games is not so great on the RPG front.  Since I posted about getting Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS) last year, my brother gave up on it when he wasn't too far in.  I did manage to play it and finish it.  I enjoyed it, but I totally get how it's considered a lesser experience compared to the previous Paper Mario games.  I can move on now... but I haven't.  I still really want to.

I mentioned getting Bowser's Fury (Switch) last MAR10, and then in the edit of that post, you can see I said that I found 3.5 hours to play it and actually get the ending.  I have since gotten 100% on that.  Did not bother to even start a replay of Super Mario 3D World (Switch) which is on the same card, as I already finished it on the Wii U.  Similarly, I did not replay the latter two games on Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch), but I did get one Shine in Super Mario Sunshine just to get the "Shine Get!" that I needed for my "Video Game Logic" parody of Daft Punk's "Technologic" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnPcjzXUox0&t=38s) - you can see it with the "Get It" first at 0:38...

As for my plans this MAR10 specifically, I probably won't be able to play for a solid 3.5 hours like I somehow managed to do last year.  Because the Wii U (and 3DS) eShops will be closing down for good about a year from now, I looked into if there was anything that I need before it's no longer available, so a couple weeks ago, I bought the Wii U Virtual Console version of Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 (GBA).  It includes all the eReader stages (which, thanks to Peardian, you can see here (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/GBA/index.htm#SuperMarioAdvance4SuperMarioBros3)) so I should be able to make some time today to play a few of those stages, at the very least.  I only played "Level E16: It's A Shoe-In" with Mario so far, as I like Kuribo's/Goomba's Shoe, but I should definitely do them all.  Some stages add in elements and items from Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario World, so that should be fun!

Let's see if by this time next year I get any closer to making time for the Mario RPGs...

I've never really done anything special on MAR10 but then again, I do have these long periods where I play very little since I'm usually too busy drawing or mapping.

I did play a whole bunch of Mario games this summer when I stopped working for five months after burning out. I finally justified the purchase of a Switch to myself because of the number of (mostly) Nintendo games that were available. I played all the way through Super Mario Odyssey as well as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury and Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe over the span of a month. They were all fun but Odyssey and Bowser's Fury were my favourites of the four.

Do Luigi games count as Mario ones? Because I also bought Luigi's Mansion 3 and I haven't even started it, though since MAR10 will be over in 15 minutes, I guess I missed it again this year!

I forgot to mention that only a week or so ago, I watched my brother play through Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (Famicom Disk System), the original game that Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) is based on.  I'd certainly known this was the case for just about as long as I've known of Super Mario Bros. 2, but relatively recently on my YouTube channel I covered The NES Endings Compendium - Years 1985-1988 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiogBxWzSWs) which talked more about it, and Shesz (who does the "Boundary Break" and "Regional Break" videos) more recently covered the differences between the two games - and quite thoroughly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDQq8Im2hVI).  Since I had also just got around to auditing my NES ROMs (why hadn't I done that earlier?) and got our old PowerPak flash cartridge to run Famicom Disk System games (again, why not earlier...), it just seemed like things were lining up to finally be interested enough and have the means to get around to it, on an actual NES - which my brother recently got an RGB mod installed on, so it was something colourful to put it through its paces, too.

The differences are interesting, but the biggest thing is that the game has to be finished with all four characters to get the full ending.  Super Mario Bros. 2 is one of the games that my brother has finished probably quite literally over a hundred times, so it was a breeze, though there was sometimes a brief pause to notice whenever there was something he noticed as different (especially as he hadn't fully watched Shesz's video).

Bowser's Fury is definitely awesome. Kind of an Odyssey area (or larger) but with different mechanics.

I captured some Galaxy planet pics for a collage recently: https://www.deviantart.com/vgcartography/art/Super-Mario-Galaxy-Planetoid-Catalog-908412054

I know they're probably all hands on for BotW2 and such, but I do hope we get an Odyssey 2 or another Mario platformer before the next console. Never getting a Mario 64-2 is an all-time screwup in my book still.

That Galaxy collage is amazing!

God I loved the Super Mario Galaxy games... Even though Odyssey was also amazing, I would rather have a Super Mario Galaxy 3 before a Super Mario Odyssey 2.

It's MAR10 Day again!

As of this morning, I got 4,000 hours of watch time (in the past year) on my "JonLeung1" YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/jonleung1), the vast majority of it due to my compilation of all The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailers and other ads (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVeerZuNZYc), which got even more of a boost yesterday with the reveal of the Final Trailer (even though I made a new compilation including that here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAYfz32t864), sometimes it takes a couple days to pick up steam)...  So I guess I owe my success to Mario, LOL.

The significance of the 4,000 hours is that's one of the requirements for monetization for a YouTube channel.  The other being 1000 subscribers, which I got 23 days ago (and I actually got to 1100 yesterday, so it's definitely accelerating).  I should probably get out more original content again (instead of rehashing Animaniacs and Super Mario Movie stuff), while I wait for a month or so for the third step, which is simply YouTube's approval, which doesn't outline their specific criteria.  Better lay off the potentially copyright-infringing stuff, so that I don't get any strikes while they're considering it.

Aside from this YouTube milestone which isn't really that Mario-related other than the success of that one video, I probably should actually play something.  It's been over eight years and I still haven't started Mario & Luigi: Dream Team so I wonder if I should just start already.  Though I don't like multiple RPGs on the go, and I've been busy with Xenoblade Chronicles 3 when I do have time to play games these days, and in that I've been enjoying grinding and am quite overpowered for where I am in the story (barely into the story at all, and already at Level 55 with all nine Classes (that I could get at this point) for all six characters, maxed (for now) at Level 10), but I can certainly take a break to find something with Mario today.  If not Dream Team, maybe I should play more of those extra e-Reader stages for Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 which I bought last year but barely played... or now it's on the GBA app for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, so I could play it there too if I don't mind starting over...

I normally play games in the morning when I am on the WalkingPad (1.25 hours, guilt-free) and haven't missed a day of walking on it since March 2020 (aside from the two weeks when it was getting repaired).  But I haven't walked this morning because of a specifically-timed errand, so I guess I'll walk after work today - and hopefully will have decided what to play when I get on it.

For someone who remembers this day every year, it's pretty bad that what I could play feels like an afterthought in the past few years...

I'm also planning a Japan trip - won't say specific dates - but I look forward to seeing Super Nintendo World in Osaka.  I wanted to go in past years, as a "flex" that I am such a Nintendo fan that I would see it in Japanese instead of waiting for it to come out in the United States in English, but alas, due to world events that wasn't possible, and I couldn't get my passport renewed in time to be there opening day for the California one.  Ah well, that's a silly thing to flex anyway.  But I'll be seeing more than just gaming-related stuff, should be a good trip.

What are you guys playing (or doing) that is Mario-specific?

EDIT: Near the end of the day, I remembered that I hadn't played the latest wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the one that reintroduces Birdo and includes the all-new Yoshi's Island track, so I played that Fruit Cup and Boomerang Cup and I guess that'll count for this year.

Let's see if I fail to start Mario & Luigi: Dream Team yet again when MAR10 rolls around next year...

I guess I'm the only one that posts here about MAR10 Day, huh?

I know I'm still behind on my Mario RPGs, so, no more excuses, yesterday I moved the Wii U down to the basement (almost all of my gaming time is while I'm walking on the WalkingPad™, after all, no one can criticize my gaming if I'm exercising at the same time) and this morning I finally started Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U).  Good timing, as apart from getting all the Alcremie (still working on that), I think I've exhausted what I can do in Pokémon Scarlet, so it's perfect timing to start something new anyway.  I heard Color Splash is not one of the better Paper Mario games, but I semi-recently got through Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS) which is considered the worst, and I still enjoyed that.  I'm pretty sure I played Super Paper Mario (Wii) when it first came out in 2007, so it's pretty crazy that it's been 17 years in between playing two console Paper Mario games that are only one generation apart.  Liking Color Splash so far, but as it's been my first day, I'm only an hour and a half into it, and am in the third area (with the waterwheels).  Concerned about the battle system, but again, Sticker Star's is way worse and I still got through that, so I'll manage.  I'm glad the stand I got for tablets actually fits perfectly into the tablet slot of the handlebar of the WalkingPad™ and that the Wii U GamePad fits snugly on that, so it's possible to walk at 4.5 mph and not worry about dropping the GamePad.  Might keep the Wii U down there for a bit, there are other games I haven't gotten to that are on there.  I recently learned that if a 3DS and Wii U both have custom firmware, it's possible to stream 3DS games onto the Wii U, so maybe I could have started Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS), as it's the one game I keep pushing off... whoops.  Not that I couldn't just play it on the 3DS, but again, if I want to put it in my morning exercise time, it's probably safer to play it on the Wii U now that I know the GamePad can be safely used.  But at the same time, maybe I could put the New 3DS XL on there the same way... something to look into.  Who would've thought ergonomics and physical logistics are things to consider in my gaming these days?

Related to Mario, I tried out the Princess Peach: Showtime! demo (Switch) yesterday.  The cookie-making part of the Patissiere Peach section was actually a little challenging; I had to do it four times to get it perfect.  I like the variety of gameplay.  I know I'm probably not the intended target demographic for it, but as a game, it seems well-made enough, it's inoffensive, why not?  Well, it's a little lower priority compared to other things I could play, but that's about it.  It's the kind of game that, if renting games was still a thing, I expect I could probably finish in a few days and be done with it.  Not sure if I'll pick it up - I'm behind on my games - Mario games, even.  Aside from the Mario RPGs, my brother and I STILL haven't finished Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch) because we're playing it together and therefore it's only possible when we're both able and willing to spend the time.  As I'm always busy trying to catch up on YouTube videos I intend to make, and he's always training Pokémon for competitions and such, it's really when we both think we deserve a Mario break at the same time.  I think we still have to do Worlds 5 and 6 to get through, but at least we've 100%ed every stage we've come across so far...

Last year on this day, I mentioned getting a ridiculous amount of hits on my YouTube channel because I reposted The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailers, which got TONS of views around March 10.  Turns out YouTube doesn't like reposted content when it comes to counting watch hours.  The prerequisite for monetization is 4000 watch hours in the past twelve months.  I've been denied monetization twice already because despite having 11,000 hours, as many of those watch hours were for copyrighted material (either the Mario or the Animaniacs stuff), and each time I'm denied I have to wait some time to reapply - now it's three months.  I tried and failed the second time in December, so the means to reapply opened up again last week, but I'm going to wait a few more days for last year's MAR10 spike to go away (so it doesn't show up in my last twelve months) to see what a "normal" amount of watch time is and so the copyrighted stuff - certainly the Mario stuff - doesn't work AGAINST me in terms of monetization.

So that's what's been up with me and Mario, how about you?
