Title: Blake Stone: Planet Strike Maps??
Post by: magicbay on January 24, 2009, 10:06:09 am
Anyone know if there's any maps for Blake Stone: Planet Strike?

I've got all the maps for the original Blake Stone game already but I don't have the maps for Planet Strike.

Can someone create some maps for this game??

Thanks in advance.

Ooo a shooter.  I'll take a look at it.

Have you asked DarkWolf about it?  If it uses the same engine as Blake Stone: Aliens Of Gold or Wolfenstein 3-D, it would be cool if it was done in the same style.

I talked about Spear of Destiny and Planet Strike in the original Aliens of Gold thread.

I may do this one since a couple people have asked about it now.  I never really cared for Planet Strike personally, because I thought the changes made to the game were for the worse.  But I have the scripts to generate the maps and if people want the maps then I guess they should be done.

It may take me a while to do it though, it uses a handful of the original textures but that's about it.

I'd love to see what kind of maps that come from Blake Stone: Planet Strike.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing what the maps look like if someone decide to create the maps and post them.

Are ya up for this, DarkWolf??

Yes DarkWolf can handle these.

I can't wait to see what kind of results that DarkWolk comes up with with this game's maps.

a quick question from an inquiring and curious

DarkWolf would be able to tell you best but based on his past submission experience, he doesn't usually send in stuff until it's entirely done.

If I remember correctly they take a few weekends. I haven't started yet; I was busy this week.  But hopefully I can start on them tomorrow.

FYI, I started working on it today.  Don't have anything worth posting yet.  I'm having to redo most of the wall textures since even the ones from the original game are darker.  But now that I finally have the ball rolling it shouldn't take me too long (hopefully).

I just saw your level 2 snapshot, DarkWolf, and I must say that ya do such amazing work mapping such games as Aliens of Gold and all of the other games.

I'm glad to see your work being submitted to such a wonderful website that all others with the exception of www.gamefaqs.com are without comparision.

As you can see, the first few of DarkWolf's Blake Stone: Planet Strike maps are now up.

You know, DarkWolf, inevitably someone's going to ask about Spear Of Destiny...  :P

The current maps made by Dark Wolf are totally awesome. The maps he's posted and are going to post in the coming weeks will undoubtly be awesome.

He knows how to do maps of all kinds. I have to commend him for all of his efforts with all the maps that he's posted in the past and will post in the future..

I give him 4 thumbs up if I had 4 thumbs.

Way to go with the maps, Dark Wolf..

I'm not sure what's up with this:

Is the grey powerup (goggles?) supposed to be halfway up the wall, or floating in space, or is it just wrong?

it's just wrong.

Actually those grey powerups as you call them are actually enemies called ceiling mounted turrets. They're supposed to be marked on the ceiling, but this indication is extremely difficult to conveniently place. If there was another way, the maps would be at top notch quality.

I still say the "transparent" walls are too dark. I suggest something like this to sort out your monitor's levels.

I figured they were ceiling mounted turrets.  But geez, Will, they're still top-notch quality!  :P

I can understand that only so much can be done, since the game's simple engine doesn't really account for a ceiling - thus being able to be mapped this way at all.

Maxim, that looks pretty handy, thanks for the link.  One of my monitors is always too dark (but I don't think that can be helped, as it's probably a hardware problem at this point, I always have it cranked up and it's still dark), and my new(er) LCD monitors seem really bright and I'm not sure if that's by comparison to my old monitor or if they really are too bright.  Sometimes I can visibly see the difference between colours even with with RGB value difference of 1, and I'm not sure if I should be able to.

I didn't even notice them. Definitely too dark.

How about a shadow (even a lame one that's just the same shape in 50% alpha black) on the floor below them? It wouldn't be there in the game but it would be a good depth cue.

The turrets do look weird.  I've never been happy with them as some are supposed to point in a certain direction to start off with (using the other frames looked even worse). I will try a shadow, the next time I do a few maps to see if it helps any.

The original game has brighter wall textures.  I suppose making the walls a little more transparent would make things better.  Part of the difficulty in the original is that the floors were mainly dark and the wall textures were usually bright.  It was difficult to find a balance between the two.  You can see the same effect with the "cloaked" enemies in this game.  When they overlap 100% floor tile they are just right, but are hard to see when they overlap a brighter wall.

They're in the map, I was just too lazy to put them in the file name.

Here is a preview of the changes.  Transparency of the walls was changed from 75/128 to 55/128.  I added a checker-board shadow the turrets.  Would have loved to do an alpha value based shadow, but the script is designed for 24-bit sprites using 0xFF00FF as a masking color, and I really don't want to have to convert all the sprites just to do a shadow.

that's understandable when dealing with programming code.

Most of the time it's just too much trouble to deal with and sometimes it's not much of a pain and it makes ya get excited to work on them.

hey DarkWolf?

I was wondering about how far you are in the remainder of the maps and am dying to see them.

I'm only curious because I can't wait to see what they look like if ya decide to post them during the week or during the upcoming weekend.

YAHOO!!!!

I can't wait to see what all the new maps look like and can't wait to download them so I can use them for the game..

I'm surprised that we got such a good response after I originally posted the first message asking about the maps..

Thank you for taking the time and effort out of your busy schedule to do these maps for the website and the many people like me that are seeking these maps, DarkWolf..

You are truly a gifted person for doing as much as ya do with doing all the maps ya've done.  If they had an award for the most gifted person as a map maker, you'd be the ultimate grand master and take the top spot in the awards..

I commend all of your efforts for being a part of this site.

DarkWolf, are there only twenty levels?  Are they called "Levels" and not "Floors"?  And where do the secret Levels fit in?  Should I put them all at the end or do they fit in better elsewhere?
Title: RE: Blake Stone: Planet Strike Maps??

I've been wondering the same thing about the secret levels too, Jon.
Title: RE: Blake Stone: Planet Strike Maps??
Post by: DarkWolf on February 17, 2009, 11:07:19 am
I think the game actually refers to them as "Areas".  Planet Strike doesn't use the elevator concept of Aliens of Gold.  I called them Levels because that's what Mapedit calls them. =/

To get to the secret levels there are teleports on four of the main levels, but they are in order was they appear in the game.

And yeah, there are only 20 main levels.  Kind of cheap considering how many AOG had.  Also 18 and 19 are small, dinky little things.

thanks Jon, but I noticed a minor problem ya made after putting up the Blake Stone: Planet Strike maps.

I noticed that Secret 3 map and Secret 4 map were linked to Secret 2 map so I thought I'd give ya a heads up on that.

Thanks for putting the maps up on the site, Jon.

DarkWolf, ya've done more for this website in the form of donating so many valuable maps for so many games that all other video game map sites don't even come close to this one.  I salute you in your map making skills.  You deserve all the praise from evreyone here..
