Over the next ten (or eleven) days, the daily polls will feature a Mega Man Robot Master Tournament!
On the daily poll, you'll vote for your favourite Robot Master from each game. The first day will be of bosses from Mega Man (including the two new Powered Up bosses), the second day will be of Mega Man II, the third day will be of Mega Man III, etc. The ninth day will be of Mega Man & Bass, and the tenth day will be of all the nine past winners. (If the polls are really close on the ninth day, it may delay the finals by a day...)
There's really no prizes, no major thing involving the winner or anything. It's just for fun.
Air vs. Aqua vs. Astro vs. Blizzard vs. Bomb vs. Bright vs. Bubble vs. Burst vs. Burner vs. Centaur vs. Charge vs. Cloud vs. Clown vs. Cold vs. Crash vs. Crystal vs. Cut vs. Dive vs. Drill vs. Dust vs. Dynamo vs. Elec vs. Fire vs. Flame vs. Flash vs. Freeze vs. Frost vs. Gemini vs. Gravity vs. Grenade vs. Ground vs. Guts vs. Gyro vs. Hard vs. Heat vs. Ice vs. Junk vs. Knight vs. Magic vs. Magnet vs. Metal vs. Napalm vs. Needle vs. Oil vs. Pharaoh vs. Pirate vs. Plant vs. Quick vs. Ring vs. Search vs. Shade vs. Shadow vs. Skull vs. Slash vs. Snake vs. Spark vs. Spring vs. Star vs. Stone vs. Sword vs. Tengu vs. Time vs. Toad vs. Tomahawk vs. Top vs. Turbo vs. Wave vs. Wind vs. Wood vs. Yamato!
-
Cool, though I don't know much about Oil and Time Man. Oh yeah, and my favourite Wily machines are the Skull-headed tank at the end of Mega Man 5 and the huge Wily Robot at the end of Mega Man IV on the Game Boy.

No L-, U-, V-, X-, or Z- Men...
LUX TiZer is a 7th Saga character, and a robotic guy, too...the "7" looks like a spun-around V...
Or you could say that you LUV the new Mega Man XZ.
-
Hmm, I like lots of those guys. The Mega Man III ones are my favorites overall, though.
I haven't played much of Powered Up in a long time. I need to do that soon. It's pretty cool to be able to play as the robot masters.
-
The day is almost over and there's only four votes?
If I didn't vote for Ice Man, there could've easily been a four-way tie... >_<
Hopefully later days will get more votes...
-
I voted Ice Man as well.
-
Shit, I forgot to vote for MM1.

Who would you have voted for?
Looks like Metal Man is well on his way to victory today.

Definitely Cut Man. He just screams 'evil psycho cutting people with blades' to me.

Man, Quick Man was one I was hoping would make it to the finals. Doesn't look likely now...
Red with a yellow "spoiler"...besides being Hot Rod-ish (okay, maybe not...) his weapon is pretty cool and useful too. I guess people here rather prefer circular saw blades being tossed around.
At one point long ago I thought Metal Man and Quick Man were somehow the same guy. Don't know why I thought that...
I like Mega Man II and III Robot Masters and Mega Man III stages. Which is why I think Mega Man III is the best, especially with those Doc Robot stages to give the II guys a rematch of sorts.
For those of you wondering why I use Roman numerals...I prefer the in-game titles. But Mega Man 8 will be 8 and not VIII because that's where the box and in-game title actually agree. (There are exceptions I would make, like the Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular game whose in-game screen just says "Snoopy".) I know some people use Roman numerals to refer to the Game Boy games but since so many games may share the same name as another but be totally different (Castlevania (NES/N64), Superman (NES/N64) (it's not actually called Superman 64), and several games that have handheld versions), I'd rather just specify the system and don't think I'm adding much to the confusion anyway.
-
Personally, I prefer Roman numerals for the Game Boy games, but since it's not universally recognized, I also specify the system.
As for my choice of Metal Man, well the Metal Blades are my all-time favourite Mega Man weapon for the original series. They're fast, can fly out in any direction, consume little weapon energy and you can have three blades on the screen at once. Nothing else has been that versatile in the Blue Bomber's arsenal since in my opinion.

Jon, how did you manage to quote only one line of my post? The "Quote" button just quotes the entire post.
-
When I hit "Edit", I can edit the post as if it were HTML. Hence, I can also edit posts to have images even if the post isn't mine and the original poster doesn't have the HTML: Images item.
I will ask Inty how to adjust what's available at what levels, so I can bump down the Shop/Bank and editing abilities.
Anyway, I hope Magnet Man gets some votes tomorrow. Though Shadow Man is pretty cool, too.
-
So, . . . who should I vote for next ;)

Speaking of edit JonLeung, any way for you to edit the first poll and add in my Cut Man vote? Just in case ;)

I don't think I can do that, but it's not even going to make a difference even if I could.

No :( ! I wanted Cut Man (whose real name is Cutty McBlade, no really!) to win! You're all a bunch of bastards you know, not giving him is one big chance to shine.
Screw you guys, I'm going home!

Ice Man could take Cut Man down any day of the week and you know it.
-
No way man, Cut Man would kill Elec Man and then use his power to crush Ice Man :P You could say that Ice Man would kill Fire Man and use his power to kill Bomb Man and use his power to kill Guts Man and use his power to kill Cut Man, but that's just not as elegant.
-
Nah, he'd go for subtlety. He'd invite his fellow Robot Masters for a party or something and while all five of them were standing around a table, he'd throw one of his Rolling Cutter through the ktichen door and decapitate them all in one swoop. He's a bastard that way, but a winning bastard still.

Wouldn't he need to throw more than one? I thought the only one-hit KOs were in Mega Man II...(Powered-up Atomic Fire on Wood Man or Metal Blade on Metal Man's rematch.)
Unless, of course, his skill with it is better than Mega Man's...which is probably what you would say.
It would have made more sense to have made your campaign to support Cut Man BEFORE the first day's polls were up...
-
Terra is always late to the party.
Next time, Terra, I'll vote for Cut Man.
AKA the sympathy vote ;)
---
Cool beans
-
Well, in the game I'm pretty sure he threw the blade on his head and it would always come back even after hitting you, so it's a real blade instead of some pseudo virtual blade that Mega Man generates with his Arm Cannon which disappears the moment it touches an enemy.
As for my vote, well I was practically not online at all during the first few days mind you. And besides, who cares about the poll really. I'm just goofing off with my favourite cutter ;).

Quick Man's cool, too, come on!
He's like a streamlined, faster version of Cut Man. He also wears his weapon on his head and it also comes back to him, albeit in a tighter arc. And they're quicker and effective against the Wily bosses. Boomerangs > Pac-Man blades anyway. And, uh, red and yellow is cooler than pink or orange or whatever Cut Man is. So bleah! ;P
-
If Quick Man hadn't destroyed me so often and so effortlessly when I was playing as a kid, he might have gotten my vote. Metal Man is the coolest after him but got my vote on account of having the best and most useful weapon ever. Boomerangs don't do shit to anything except Gutsdozer. Sorry Quick, next time don't be such an ass :P

Hey, the Quick Boomerangs also waste the dragon easily! Don't forget that! And being a tough boss makes him a cool boss!
Okay, so he's defeated easily with Flash Man's and Air Man's weapons. Still.
What a coincidence, that's today's Bob and George.
-
My choices to date:
Mega Man: Cut Man - He just looks like a crazy psychopath who loves to cut things/people >:)
Mega Man 2: Metal Man - Because his weapon is my favourite in the whole NES series
Mega Man 3: Gemini Man - None of the Robot Masters in this game really excited me, so I went with the one I thought looked cooler. Plus, he's got a cocky grin and can clone himself for added confusion/fire power :)
Mega Man 4: Pharaoh Man - I also liked Skull Man, but I just thought Pharaoh Man had more majesty.
Mega Man 5: Napalm Man - It was a close call between him and Charge Man, because of my childhood love of trains, especially steam engines. But in the end, Napalm Man looked less silly and more like a walking arsenal so he got my vote.

Mine:
Mega Man I: Ice Man - He had the best looking stage, in my opinion. And ice is cool (oh god, that was bad).
Mega Man II: Metal Man
Mega Man III: Magnet Man - Tough choice. I like most of them equally, but Magnet Man had a fun stage. And you could fight Proto "Break" Man halfway through.
Mega Man IV: Skull Man - Almost voted Pharaoh Man ;)
Mega Man V: Gravity Man - His stage was very unique, unlike many of the other ones.
-
Me and Revned sometimes think too much alike that it's scary (though there have been exceptions)...
His and my votes are the same with the exception of II (I prefer Quick Man, as I said) and the reasoning behind Ice Man (I think he's cutesy and humourous-looking, and has blue, unlike the other boring/too similarly-coloured Robot Masters). I ALSO almost voted Pharaoh Man. Whoa.
I think TerraEsperZ's choices were probably all my next choices that I could see myself voting for.
If TerraEsperZ had remembered to actually vote for Cut Man in Mega Man, then all polls have 6 votes - including today so far. We need at least a seventh one before the day is over to break the current tie between Gravity Man and Napalm Man.
Well, we don't NEED one...I suppose they could both go to the finals. But what if, with only six voters, we come up with as much as a six-way tie? o_0
-
I'd like to suggest adding two more polls if you're not too strict on the definition of Robot Masters: the Stardroids from Mega Man V on the Game Boy (not made by Dr. Wily, but then again the Masters from the fourth game were made by Dr. Cossack) and the exclusive Game Boy bosses, namely Enker, Quint, Punk, Ballade and the Stardroid leader, Terra (and maybe even the final Stardroid, Sunstar).
I think those two polls would be interesting, and since they aren't the most famous Masters, they don't stand much chance of ending up winning the final poll if that's what you might fear.

Two more votes:
Mega Man VI: Though choice, because almost all the Robot Masters have great designs (due to the robot design contest plot). I ended up voting for Knight Man, because he just looks tough and dignified with his shield and flail.
Mega Man VII: Alot easier this time, since I found more them rather boring surprisingly. I finally chose Turbo Man for two reasons: he's a transformer (oh, like you didn't see that one coming) and because of his appearance in the "Dr Wily's Happy Evil Fun Time Show" flash animation in the following scene about what Robot Masters would like to do:
Top Man: I want to be an Indy 500!
Quick Man: I want to break the sound barrier!
Turbo Man: I just want to go home and eat chips...
Top Man: ?...
Quick Man: ...

I think you're referring to "Interview With A Damp Wire", one of the Flash cartoons included in this:
Atomic Fire's Flash Comics
I like most of the Dr. Wily Shorts, one of which has Turbo Man in a truly Turbo capacity...
-
Yeah that's the one. I got it from another site, and for some reason I never quite got the title when they sung it (for a french-speaker, some english sentences are just too non-sensical to be able to deduce the words correctly when you're not sure of what you've heard).

Great. We got a tie for Mega Man VII between Turbo and Shade. Looks like someone forgot to vote that day, too.
-
Mega Man VIII: Actually ended up voting for Clown Man. Sword Man has a great voice but he just looks too stupid to me. Tengu Man almost me it however, since I just like his Tengu Blade.
Mega Man & Bass: It was a tie between Burner Man and Pirate Man, but in the end, Burner won. He's a pyromaniac, pure and simple, and unlike Cut Man, his insanity shows in his posture and facial expression :)

Tomorrow's poll (or actually, I think in a few minutes if the poll changes at 10 PM my time which I THINK it does) is a rematch between Shade Man and Turbo Man, who both tied in Mega Man VII. I only want one from each game, so this poll will determine who will represent VII.
-
Go Shade Man!
-
No, go Turbo "Transforming, Chips Eating" Man!

Oh, great. It's early in the morning (for me) and I see we've got our usual six votes and it's tied again. >_<

Ok, I purposely voted to make a tie. Is that evil? But two other members voted after I did so its not entirely my fault.

If Turbo Man can maintain his lead, this is what the finals tomorrow will comprise of:
Mega Man: Ice
Mega Man II: Metal
Mega Man III: Magnet
Mega Man IV: Skull
Mega Man V: Gravity
Mega Man VI: Knight
Mega Man VII: Turbo
Mega Man 8: Sword
Mega Man & Bass: Pirate
Hmmm...metal pirate swords? Metal knight swords? Magnets and metal? Pirate skulls? Gravity and magnetism and turbo...ness? On ice!
I dunno...
-
We're on the finals and Pirate Man is cleaning up? o_0
You guys know that it's not the Mega Man & Bass poll but the FINALS today, right?
-
I guess that concerns me since I too voted for Pirate Man :D
Well personally, there's a strong visual element to my preference and Mega Man 8 / Mega Man & Bass (which esssentially use the same graphic style) simply have much better looking Robot Masters with more unique styles.
In comparison, all the Masters in the first game basically looked like Mega Man with custom helmets and different colors, and it wasn't until Mega Man 4 or 5 that we truely started to get more differentiated designs.
Nowadays, they all have different proportions and truly unique styles and body parts. Take Ground Man for example; he doesn't nearly look like anyone else and instead looks simlar to be a drill tank in a humanoid body. Pirate Man looks like a robot pirate, while Astro Man looks, well, like a goofy robot torso stuck to a giant bowling ball.

Looks like I voted against the crowd in vain :(
-
I would've thought the later ones would've been less popular since the games themselves are...
You'd think the older ones would have been replayed more often at a time when fewer games were available, so a nostalgia factor would be there, and the later ones less popular as people found the series becoming stale.
But I guess when you have only 6-7 voters here who likely have played them all...
In any other scenario, I would probably bet on the winner of such a tournament to have been from one of the first three games.
-
Well, my favourite games are Mega Man 2 to 5, but that doesn't mean those games have my all-time favourite Robot Masters. There's a lot of other things that influence my appreciation for those games: level designs, ambiance (really important in the Skull Castle stages), *soundtrack*, graphics, etc.

The polls are specifically about the Robot Masters, though...
I think the thing about later games, with the increased resolution, increased animation, inclusion of voice clips (and in some X games, brief pre-battle dialogue) have given the Robot Masters more definite personalities, but I think there was something fun about the earlier ones that didn't have as much about them that were defined.
You might have just thought that as robots, they wouldn't have much personality anyway. Or you could imagine what they would be like. (They are popular with sprite comics because many are recognizeable and yet the sprite comic "artist" can insert whatever personality they think fits their purposes.) Or perhaps their abilities really defined them enough, or provided direction to your imagination to see them as the opponent you wanted.
I actually liked it when they were all stumpy little NES men. It's like it shows how much of a character (I use that term slightly differently than personality here) you can have from just a few pixels. It makes them seem more like each other (and as we all know, bad guys are always more similar in appearance to each other than the good guys are) and yet their different abilities make them seem as if they were a team with different functions (like the first Robot Masters supposedly were). And some guys were different ENOUGH from the basic Robot Master template, like Air Man or Napalm Man.
I'm kind of having ambivalent feelings all over the place about them - I don't want to say I hate the later ones because I don't. But I remember being leery about the first times their sizes varied so much, or their rooms were no longer single rooms, etc. I'm a slave to routine, maybe.
-
So, Jon, why after all this did you vote Pirate Man as well?
-
I felt the same way about Mega Man 7 where for the first time they were truly varied but at the same times, I didn't like most of their designs. Some Mega Man 8 designs I also didn't like but Mega Man & Bass did it right; even those I liked less had good design to me.
I fully recognize that I'm biased based on the art but that's me. Now, If I had judged most of the NES Robot Masters based on their sprites in The Power Battles and The Power Fighters which used the same style as Mega Man 7, it would probably have influenced my final vote more but I just didn't think about it.
I also think that Capcom's sprites artists got better as time went along on the NES/GB. They had better graphics, better pose, more animation, etc. It was limited by the hardware and graphic style but it was still there. That's mostly why the first three batch of Masters didn't rate higher for me.

Magnet Man. BECAUSE.
I was thinking about Metal Man...while I think it sucks that Quick Man lost to him, I think Metal Man (even if being a robot, his name is redundant) is pretty cool as a guy who jumps around throwing circular saw blades. But he doesn't have a chance so I chose Magnet Man, typically my first choice in a Mega Man III playthrough, and MM III is my favourite MM game.
I don't even remember how Pirate Man attacks, sheesh.
Someone vote Magnet Man within the next half-hour and tie it up!

Sheesh, you seem a *tad* bitter about it I think.

Not really. At least not as much as you think. Stupid lack of tone in written text!
Time's up!
THE CHAMPION IS...

PIRATE MAN!
-
I can't think of another series with as many characters other than the Mega Man X series. Maybe we should do that one day.
-
Okay, this current poll? The one with the same finalists but including Galaxy Man? It's not coming down until someone breaks the tie between Ice Man and Magnet Man!
It's funny...I almost voted for Turbo Man over Magnet Man. If I had, there would've been a three-way tie between Magnet, Turbo, and Galaxy, and Ice Man would've been the clear winner.
No votes at all for last time's champion, Pirate Man...I guess that means I probably should've redone the polls for each game rather than assuming everyone's favorites are still the same...
-
Given the amount of Transformer fans here, I was surprised that I was the only person to vote for Turbo Man.
