Maps In Progress / Re: Arena: Maze of Death (Game Gear)
« on: July 02, 2019, 02:55:39 pm »
Hey, all my attachments disappeared... Did I miss some announcement when that happened?

Oh hey, it's me! Sadly I've been out of map making for a while now, but glad this is still here. The final level maze was a big driver for mapping this one, check out all the loop paths.

It's 2016, don't use Sourceforge. Github is presumably the answer. Both will be unhappy to store many gigabytes of revisions, though.

The technology hasn't really come along, there are a few programs for stitching screenshots from video but otherwise you just have to do it by hand. Sega consoles tend not to have much in memory that isn't on screen so there aren't many tile map viewers.

For your next challenge, make it fit in 7x7 pixels :)

Map Requests / Re: Request Listings

Yeah, close the requests section. If anything it's off-putting to see the begging and ranting.

Try Layout -> Edge Routing -> Organic. You may still need to manually tweak things. It may be impossible to avoid edge overlaps. Maybe you can post a preview to see if we can improve on it?

Tools -> Fit Node To Label can operate globally.

Images have captions already. Just hit F2 to start editing. The properties window lets you control the caption position. I didn't figure out a way to turn a text node into an image...

File -> Preferences -> Editor -> Dynamically Adjust Node Size To Label Size
Drag and drop image files to add them. They act just like the regular nodes, but (and I hadn't tried this before) they totally support transparency, the arrows find the opaque edge and point at that.

I recommend a free program called yEd. You draw the boxes/circles and arrows and it has a bunch of algorithms to try to lay it all out - the result is not necessarily the final, beautiful mess you wanted, but it does the "lay it all out somewhat sensibly" stage for you and then you can tweak it. I think you can then export it to a vector format suitable for making beautiful if wanted. I tend to use it more for directed graphs with directional flow, but the mess-of-nodes thing would work too.

Map Requests / Re: Sonic 4 Maps
« on: May 09, 2016, 05:38:55 am »
Hmm, maybe a forum mod to hide the requests forum from anyone who has ever submitted a map :)

On the basic level, mapping consists of (ignoring 3D games):

1. Take a screenshot
2. Take another screenshot
3. Line them up in an image editor (Paint will work)
4. Go to step 2 until you are finished

The hard part is being pixel perfect, and getting the parts you can't easily see in the game. If all you want is the layout, then you don't need to be so perfectionist about it.

Have you tried? It's not hard, it's time consuming. The whole idea that there's people out there waiting to get requests, and if you nag just a bit more then they'll dump dozens or hundreds of hours' work on you, is quite mistaken. You need your expectations to be managed way down.

How about we block all requests declaring a "need" for maps? If you need them so much, do it yourself - it's not hard.

I don't know the site in question but at some point they will delete old stuff, the only way to be safe is to own the hosting or have good backups. The forums here would be an acceptable alternative if the image restrictions were lifted.

Web filters will block entire domains for porn. Then again, they block this site for being about games...

All image hosts delete inactive content. Also, porn = blocked.
