Maps In Progress / RE: Paper Mario maps: .PNG to .JPG?
« on: January 23, 2009, 10:41:37 am »
Oh, I've never played any Castlevania games. Not really my taste.

C4D is an expensive program, but if you can get it, it's very powerful. It's a full-fledged professional modeling/animation program. And, because of that, it's not the easiest thing to just pick up and make maps with. I've had it for almost a year now and am still learning stuff.

Depending on which emulator you used to dump the VRML, the textures will either be named with a large hex value or a number, but either way the color and alpha channels will be separate.

Just to let you know, I do have my sights set on mapping both 64 Zelda games, but I won't stop you if you get to mapping them before me.

I'm afraid I don't recognize that game at all. :(

By the way, as I'm ripping this stuff, do any of you have 3D programs and/or would like the model files? It would be best if you had Cinema 4D since that's what I use (and it seems .3ds files exported from C4D can't support things like alpha channel, seamless tiling (for half-textures), multiple textures on one object, and other stuff to make the object look like it does in-game. Without C4D, the variety of models I can give you becomes pretty limited.

I can give you anything used in my Paper Mario maps so far, as well as some stuff from the beginning of a few other N64 games:

-Majora's Mask

-Space Station Silicon Valley

-Super Smash Bros.

-Tetrisphere

-Star Fox 64

Would finding a cheat code for infinite lives or something make it easier? If I remember correctly, each floor could be captured with pretty much one screenshot. But I guess there's still the "tedious" aspect. :P

I use 1964. I know other emulators support a VRML dump feature, but this one is the easiest to use.

However, after the VRML is dumped, it still requires quite a bit of work to get it to look like it's supposed to, let alone presentable.

Sorry for the multiple posts in a row, but I wanted to announce that I finally mapped out the last special promo level from Super Mario Advance 4! And, since there'd be no point in re-mapping SMB3 again, this means I'm finished with the game! It's a shame they didn't continue releasing levels. Look for the map on the site soon.

Also, I'm at Dry Dry Desert in Paper Mario.

Mapping Tips/Guides / RE: How to find scroll and camera control codes
« on: January 17, 2009, 02:50:35 pm »
The only downside to using cheat codes to manipulate the camera for 3D games is that even if you manage to get yourself complete control of camera movement, the size of the map you're able to capture is limited by the size of the emulator screen. Not only that, but the bigger the room, the smaller everything will have to be to fit inside. And of course, there's perspective distortion to handle.

That's why I rip the VRML data and render with a 3D Modeling program to give me complete control over not only the angle but the level of distortion or lack thereof. Once I finish Paper Mario, I do plan on mapping several other N64 games such as Space Station Silicon Valley, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and the Target/Platforms stages in Super Smash Bros. I imagine that places like Hyrule Field and Termina Field would end up with incredibly tiny details if done with a screenshot.

I know in some games, moving your character off-camera downwards actually kills you due to how the engine works. I found this out the hardway in Yoshi Topsy-Turvy. I use Cheat Engine with it to warp around the room.

I might try screwing with the camera on Yoshi's Island some time, though I don't think I'll really have to.

Mapping Tips/Guides / RE: Background Styles
« on: January 13, 2009, 08:36:39 am »
No problem. And just as a note, I plan on ripping all the full 512x512 backgrounds in the game for use in my maps and other personal uses. However, you are more than welcome to use them as well.

Right now, I'm still getting used to my new class schedule for the semester, so I don't know when exactly I'll get to them. Until then, you'll just have to continue using the normal method.

Unless I'm mistaken the full background itself is 512x512, which would not only be tall enough to fill the map, but tile perfectly horizontally as well. In fact, the background you posted could tile horizontally if you cropped it to 512.

As for actually acquiring the full 512 in height, I'm not sure... You might have to get it from another room that uses the same background and match the palette.

Map Gab / RE: Mario Party Advance: Is there more?
« on: January 03, 2009, 09:20:36 pm »
Well, one looked somewhat small, but the other one was actually surprisingly large since it involved moving platform hopping. I might put them all into a single image, or might keep them separate, depending on dimensions and shape and such. We'll see. It'll be a while though. Thanks.

Map Gab / Mario Party Advance: Is there more?
« on: January 01, 2009, 07:24:18 pm »
Now, I myself have never really played Mario Party Advance until just today. I've mapped out all of "Shroom City" which seems to be the only board in the game. Also, from what little I've seen of the "mini-games", they seem to be all little story-based things or random little things that use only one screen and don't really seem like they'd even be considered "maps".

So, to anyone who has played this game fully, is there anything left to map?

On a whim, I decided to start mapping Mario Party Advance, since I figured it would go quickly. I might have a map done by the end of the day.

Map Gab / Talk about timing! (Super Smash Bros.)
« on: December 31, 2008, 03:55:22 pm »
A few days ago, (the 28th) I got a hold of the N64 Super Smash Bros. and started ripping various things, mostly the stages, just for kicks. After ripping half the stages, I remembered that this site doesn't have maps of all of them and that I could maybe make some maps and submit them. Yesterday, I checked the site only to find that the very next day, someone had submitted three excellent maps of the three 1-Player-exclusive maps. Though lacking backgrounds, his maps are more accurate since the 3D program I use doesn't seem to support the kind of shaders that the N64 uses (for things like the rainbow gradient on the center of Final Destination). However, I still might make maps of all the Break the Targets/Board the Platforms stages and the Race to the Finish stage. Unless someone beats me to those too. :P

Of course, this sorta thing happens to me all the time, so I'm used to it. :P Once again, good job to Perfect for making those maps.

Maps In Progress / RE: Paper Mario maps: .PNG to .JPG?
« on: December 27, 2008, 10:39:14 pm »
Yeah, even if I switch to .JPG, I will still keep the raw .PNG files that I made the map with. Now THOSE are large. With all the layer and vector and text data, some of them are upwards of 25MB.

I still haven't decided, so I'm going to let this topic go on longer to see if it helps. As for the blurriness of the textures, I've actually been leaving them pixelly because the program I use can't emulate the bluriness the same way, and it screws up certain objects' tiling (leaving blurry pieces around the edges for objects with alpha transparency). However, it does get blurred a tad when I reize it from the render to the size used for the map.

VGMaps Social Board / RE: How did you find VGMaps.com?

I did sign up at the message board when it was hosted on omega-something and had a yellow-black-and-red theme, but I never re-signed up after it changed. I didn't post very much then, though. I'm just not one to join many message boards. You're right, though, maybe I should have came here sooner. :P
