Mapping Tips/Guides / New Super Mario Bros. Wii
« on: June 06, 2013, 08:32:35 pm »
So I was dicking around experimenting in Reggie, and found something that may make mapping New Super Mario Bros. Wii a lot easier.

If you don't already know, Reggie is a level editor for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which I find very impressive. Probably as intuitive as Lunar Magic. It basically extracts the level files from the NSMBW game disc and onto your SD card, which you can then import into the editor and, well, edit.

Anyways, I found out that the editor has a "Screenshot entire level" button. Or at least, a "Screenshot entire zone" button. In the game, the levels are broken up into "Zones", which are basically camera zones: the camera can't exit the zone. Each zone has different settings (backgrounds, music, tilesets, zoom level).

So, I took a screenshot of each layer, put them together, and bam, this happened:

Sadly, Reggie doesn't support backgrounds and some sprites (notably the big rotating ground-things). They usually would just show up as squares. So, there are two viable options:

1. Take multiple screenshots of all 113+ background layers and god-knows-how-many sprites and try to compile them together.

2. Rip the backgrounds and sprites directly from the game files.

Obviously the second option is more reasonable.

If I'm not mistaken, all Wii game assets (including the graphics) are stored on the discs in .arc (archive) files, which can easily be viewed and edited by certain programs. So, correct me if I'm wrong but, mapping this game can just be as simple as taking a few screenshots in Reggie, ripping the required backgrounds and sprites, and putting them together.

Thoughts?

I meant the Wii wasn't as successful as its competition. Originally, everybody was really excited for the Wii, but then it died down and the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 became more popular among most people, though not all people. I do like the Wii, but from what I've heard, it gained a bad reputation compared to the other consoles in its generation.

Gaming / Cave Story 3D

So apparently Nicalis remade the popular freeware game Cave Story in 2.5D for the 3DS, and was released in November 2011 (how did I not know about this before?). It looks really nice.

Fun fact: Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya, the creator of the original Cave Story, originally wanted Cave Story to be a 3D game. Now he got his wish.

It's kind of nice to see the Wii U get more attention than its predecessor. Maybe the Wii U will actually be successful.

I can't for the life of me play any games with Dolphin on my computer, it'll be too slow. :P
Besides, Dolphin is still in its early stages and won't help with any 3D mapping of any sort.

It`ll be hard painstakingly difficult, but I may be able to do this (with the Reggie! program), though it (probably) won`t look good. :P
And plus, I`m already doing something right now.

Maps In Progress / Advance Wars (GBA)
« on: July 16, 2012, 05:35:40 pm »
Was bored, started mapping Advance Wars. It shouldn't take too long, I already mapped all of Field Training (13 missions) in a day.

The way I'm doing this is recreating each of the levels in a sort of map editor/viewer. I don't know if this counts as ripped or original, since some sprites are different, but it's all 95% the same.

Mapping Tips/Guides / Possible Super Mario 64 maps?
« on: April 29, 2012, 09:45:21 pm »
I'm surprised nobody's taking on Super Mario 64, as it's very well easily possible to map using Toad's Tool 64. I sort of messed around with it and got these very low-quality low-res maps (below).

METHOD: Using Toad's Tool 64, I loaded up a Super Mario 64 ROM and browsed the different areas. Then I took screenshots of the areas using the top view. Or, if you want, multiple screenshots to make it more high-res.

It doesn't have to be viewed from the top, too. You can make cross-sections, view it from the side, make cross-sections from the side, view it upside-down, etc.

...just something I found out. :P

Proper order sent, along with some things that probably should be changed. And by probably I mean need to be. :P

So I haven't been here in at least two years. I didn't really have anything to do, so I recently just started working on this again :P.
Also, I realised that someone else is already working on this game, but no news has been heard from that since 2006, so I think it's safe to keep going.

I've already done about a third of the game, but unmarked, since I don't have the time to add in all the sprites, entities, enemies, etc. Expect this game to be done fairly soon.

MAPS DOWNLOAD (ZIP FILE):

COMPLETED AREAS:
Start Point & First Cave
Mimiga Village + All buildings
Egg Corridor + All rooms & eggs
Grasstown + All buildings
Sand Zone + Most rooms
Labyrinth (one room)

METHOD: I use Cave Editor (since no other editor works for me) and screencap the rooms.

Maybe when I have some time, I can add in everything else.
