Map Gab / RE: Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES)
« on: August 03, 2008, 02:38:55 pm »
I didn't really have much choice when it came down to Vista. New laptops comes exclusively with Vista, and if I formatted and loaded XP on my own I void my warranty and service agreement. And I *needed* a laptop for the coming school year.

I'll try out the Zsnesw142, but as for the cheats I use to help with my mapping, it's a "walk through walls cheat" so I can see the rest of the area that's not on the playable path but still part of the zone... it's basically a necessity now that I've found it. Stupid ista for not letting it work properly...

I've recently started maping this game again, butmI've encountered a snag; I've recently gotten a new laptop and laptop's nowadays only come with Vista. Problem is my SNES emulator (snes9xw) won't run with the cheats on. As in, when the cheats are active, when I move to a new screen the emulator resets the game. The point that I'm at the game now though almost demands the cheats.

Any suggestions?

You just made many a geek's wet dream come true Jon. :p

And wow, that's some major dedication to put all that together, and some real research. (I'm not into comic books, so if it's not that far-fetched to know all that stuff, it's just beyond me, haha)

Gaming / RE: I want a Wii, and Nintendo doesn't want me to have one
« on: July 16, 2008, 05:46:05 pm »
We finally picked up a Wii this past weekend. It came bundled with GH3 (old news since I beat it while away at school), but I picked up RE4 while at Future shop buying a new laptop. Haven't even cracked the plastic on the game yet, but I'll let you know my impressions when I do.

And I figure it's just as well we got a Wii, seeing as my sister destroyed one of the memory card slots on our 360 last week by trying to jam a UBS controller cable in there...

Having thumbnails for each map would make it even more picture heavy than it already is, and take up an enourmmous amount of bandwith. Does anyone remember when no maps were posted for months becuase of lack there? I don't think that would be enjoyable again.

But I definitely push for the search option. It's would be easier to directly compare maps from a series but on different consoles easier i.e. Zelda, or compare the same game on multiple platforms i.e. Prince of Persia.

A semi-easy way I can think of doing that is to have each different game that we have maps for have its own page with the list of maps found there rather than on the main console page. Keeps the page size smaller, and if the filenames were standardized to be the title of the game, setting the search function to find key words within that shouldn't be too hard.

I'll post updates of what's going on on IGN while at work. It's what I spend half my day doing anyways...

While at home though, I get to try and fight a new laptop and Vista all at the same time.

Map Gab / RE: 10,000TH MAP!

I love compilation stats. It always gives you a reason to sit back and go "Huh, we've really made something here. What an accomplishment" ... Or sometimes rather to some of us "We should get out more" :P

But no, stats are awesome, and this is a huge milestone. What would be really cool to see is the dates that the other listed milestones were posted (if that was ever kept track of) so you can see the progression of the size and popularity of the site.

And it's also a great way that we can all pat ourselves on the back for a few seconds before getting back to adding more :P

Map Gab / RE: Interesting Obeservation (Zelda)

...which would still result in hundreds of maps instead of thousands. Overall it's redundant. If the maps are randomly generated each time, there's really no point in mapping then at all, and just having a collection of all the map pieces is kind of pointless if you don't know which combination you'll come across.

So I checked around facebook (cause you mentioned that specifically) and while I didn't find a milestone tracker or anything like that, I did manage to find a few other applications that might interest some people. I only went through 250 pages of the gaming applications I doubt there are many more decent apps than these.

-- GamingSocial - Catalog your Video Games * See what your Friends are playing, Write Reviews, and Recommend Games * Meet new People who are Playing your Favorite Game

-- Wii Friend Number - This application will allow you to easily share your Wii Console number and Wi-fi friend codes on your Facebook profile

-- Video Game Quiz - Take the Quiz or add a question! This is the longest Video Game Quiz on Facebook and it's all created by USERS!

-- Mario Kart Wii - Share your MarioKart Wii License Number with your Friends and the Facebook Community more easly

-- Gamertags - Add a gamertag for your Wii / DS / Xbox 360 / PS3 / PC as well as for individual games. Share gamertags / friend codes / gamercard with friends or join a group. Makes it easy to find people to play online with

-- Video Games Q&A - Get help with your favorite games, trade strategies, or get cheat codes to give you that extra edge! Get answers from your Friends or anyone else on Facebook!

-- Wii and DS Friend Codes - See all your friends' Wii and Nintendo DS wi-fi connect game friend codes as well as share yours! Powered by nwiifi.com.

-- Wii Friend Codes - A simple application to allow users to share their Wii friend codes across their social network. It should be made clear that this application is not related to or authorised by Nintendo in any way.

-- And not to mention the several Xbox Live trackers.

So that's what I have. I'll check around the internet some some for anything else I can stumble across.

Maps Of The Month / RE: 2008/07: Wolfenstein 3-D (PC) - DarkWolf
« on: July 02, 2008, 06:02:13 pm »
Man this brings back some memories. It was one of the first games I played ever, and it's always had a close place in my heart. I have to say DarkWolf, these are more than impressive. I must have been way behind the bandwagon when these originally got posted, but you more than deserve the recognition here. Congrats.

Map Requests / RE: Mega Man Maps
« on: June 24, 2008, 10:44:48 am »
If we're going to get into the argument that "this element can beat this one because..." I think the biggest culprit of that is Pokemon, but in both instances they just use the most basic properties of the elements do that the average person can grasp the concept instead of feeling left behind in the gameplay because they can't think of all the application for one thing in particular.

And then as for manes of certain characters names not fitting into a certain theme or what not, eventually they had to run out of idea :P It always happens. Either that or they might have though ahead and thought that having too many characters named after musical terms might just not fit so well in an action shooter... It worked well for Eternal Sonata, but then the whole game was built off the concept of everything is influenced by music.

And I'll leave foray into unrelated topics there. :)

Maps In Progress / RE: Wario Land 2 (GB)
« on: June 21, 2008, 07:05:04 pm »
Now what I can't seem to understand is that you say you want to map this game, yet all you do is take the screens and piece of the levels and ask others to do the hard part for you. Mapping is doing both parts to the best of your ability, and that ability will only get better with practice.

So really, make up your mind. If you're going to map, great, but then try putting stuff together and submitting it for critique instead of constantly asking for tips if all you're going to do is pass it on to others.
