Gaming / RE: You will be Wiiing soon! (A Wii countdown topic)
« on: August 09, 2006, 07:36:42 am »
August 9, 2006

85 days until Nov. 2, 2006 (a possible launch date, says IGN)

95 days until Nov. 12, 2006 (a possible launch date, says IGN)

99 days until Nov. 16, 2006 (the last day before the PS3 launch)

100 days until Nov. 17, 2006 (PS3 launch day)

106 days until Nov. 23, 2006 (Thanksgiving (US))

138 days until Dec. 25, 2006 (Christmas)

144 days until Dec. 31, 2006 (New Year's Eve)

It's now 100 days to the PS3 launch, for those of you who can afford it and think it's worth it.  If you want to talk about a chancy launch purchase, that would be it.

I've never had a problem with getting Nintendo products at launch, and the most recent ones are the ones that I did.

Ironically (at least from your perspective) the only one that I had a problem with was the DS Lite - which I didn't get at launch - that had a dead pixel in the middle of it.  It was more of annoyance, really, the store let us exchange it that same day for one that was good.

Not that you're wrong, some products can be rushed - it was kinda scary, that first batch of Xbox 360s that ate up DVDs and/or died within a few months.  I don't get the feeling that the Wii was as rushed as the Xbox 360, and Nintendo has a good track record about these things whereas Microsoft does not.

86 days until Nov. 2, 2006 (a possible launch date, says IGN)

96 days until Nov. 12, 2006 (a possible launch date, says IGN)

100 days until Nov. 16, 2006 (the last day before the PS3 launch)

101 days until Nov. 17, 2006 (PS3 launch day)

107 days until Nov. 23, 2006 (Thanksgiving (US))

139 days until Dec. 25, 2006 (Christmas)

145 days until Dec. 31, 2006 (New Year's Eve)

As you can see, there are 100 days (or less) left until you Wii! Well, assuming that Nintendo holds to their insistence that they'll launch before the PS3. I really don't think they'll launch the day before...but the point is, it's now got to be a two-digit number of days remaining! (Unless they launch this week or next - which is, of course, extremely unlikely.)

If you're not getting one until Christmas, then you'll have to wait 139 days regardless. (Unless, of course, Nintendo pulls a fast one on us, but keeps their promise of 2006, in which case you may not play with your Wii for 145 days. Unlikely, but I put that date there anyway.)

(I call this a pre-countdown topic, no sense making a countdown topic until an official date is revealed.)

Map Gab / RE: Kid Chameleon (Genesis)

They're up.  They took a while (my being sick didn't help), but they're up!

It's always nice to see completely mapped Sega Genesis games.  This is, what, only our fourth - after Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Granada, and Castlevania: Bloodlines?

It's part of the contract, so I don't think I like that being in the hands of the coder.

When I get bustin98 set up, I'll have him change the ads to be an inline frame of the other ads I have up everywhere else on the site - meaning that I'll have direct control over them without having to rely on anybody else.

Though all I'm asking from bustin98 is to fix the little irksome things here and there, and then I probably won't call on him too much.  It's not like it's a full-time job...

Inty may have fallen off the face of the earth for all I know at this point.

I wish he hadn't made those text ads so small before leaving for so long.  And why - after all those times that I told him they needed to be big and bold?  Sheesh.

And other fixes too, that he said were easy - they probably are easy for someone who knows PHP - but why'd he have to disappear like that?

If bustin98 wants, I will give him access to whatever he needs to be an admin/coder and hopefully get some of those persistent irks out of here.

As for Inty, I dunno.  He hasn't answered my PMs or emails.  And how long has it been?  A month or two or more?

Map Gab / RE: Adventures In The Magic Kingdom (NES)
« on: August 04, 2006, 03:42:22 pm »
Weird how the second map is blocked off at work but the first one isn't.  Something about personal storage sites being blocked, but they're both ImageShack!

I'd like to see this done...it fits in the "NES Atlas recreation" I had hoped for.  This game wasn't in there, but other Disney games by Capcom were.

I'm finding that by checking on "Brute force compression" in PNGGauntlet, I can compress .PNGs even more!  o_0

Maps Of The Month / RE: 2006/08: The Lion King (Super NES) - Grizzly
« on: August 04, 2006, 12:38:02 pm »
Sheesh...I finally break the habit of picking Maps Of The Month the night before by getting it ready a day before that, but then the site runs out of bandwidth and then it looks like I'm eighteen hours late anyway. Gaaah!

And it's been a few days...no comments for Grizzly and his maps?

Lions and grizzlies and lateness, oh my!

Gaming / RE: Now I'm really getting excited for the Wii
« on: August 04, 2006, 07:51:55 am »
FPSes are all over the spectrum for me, in terms of interest/non-interest and I don't think it has to do with whether it's on the consoles or PC.

I've played Halo on the PC just because of the hype behind Halo (and I'll probably play Halo 2 on the PC once Windows Vista comes out).  But just to see what the hype was about (and was a little disappointed, but at least I'm allowed to criticize it.

I've played Doom 3 because of my nostalgia with the original Doom.

I've played most James Bond 007 games, and they're okay.  Nothing seems to touch GoldenEye in terms of fun, though.

I'm interested in Half-Life (2) because of all the physics and stuff, but haven't actually played it yet.

I enjoyed TimeSplitters: Future Perfect a lot more than I thought I would, and my brother loved the ability to create stages - despite the fact that he generally doesn't like FPSes...

Metroid Prime, if you call it an FPS despite Nintendo's insistence that it's an FPA, is cool.

But generally, if it's another one of those WWII games (other than the original Wolfenstein 3-D), or another one of those squad-based counter-terrorism things, if it's anything realistic or generic, I'm turned right off.

But yes, the Wii controller should hopefully turn the genre all around, and then all those people that need their "mature" games will turn to the Wii.  After dispatching some Yakuza with the Wii controller as a sword and a gun in Red Steel, it will feel pretty lame to just push a button while aiming with analogue sticks in Halo 3.  I tried it at E3, and despite being overly sensitive as a gun and seemingly undersensitive as a sword, it was still more natural, and I already felt that FPSes would be awkward to play the "old" way, whether with analogue sticks or a mouse.

Let's compare these pics:

They both have Unicron up above, three Decepticons in the air, an Autobot commander in the middle, with one other Autobot to the left, two on the right, and one in the background visible between their legs.

And I see a spelling error and a capitalization error in your last post.  ;)

I wonder if the Mega Man comic books by Dreamwave were any good?  I remember seeing one page and thinking that it was neat.

VGMaps Social Board / RE: RPG Character Art (shameless art boasting)

Something looks awkward about his right hand - especially the part that I assume to be his fingers gripping the gun.  And I agree with bustin...if he's an arms dealer, he should be older...or at least tougher.  Something like a scar on his face or at least more rugged features would be cliche, but seems more fitting for the type of character than not.

I'm not sure I could do much better so I have nothing to say about the rest of it.

TerraEsperZ took my top choice at the time of my writing of the first post...  the world of Mega Man (classic) is cool, you can tell from my Roomba topic that I like robots.

And I was also thinking that Mega Man X, Mega Man Zero, and now Mega Man ZX, each approximately a hundred years after each other, just get all apocalyptic and strange and weird.  Mega Man's world is cute and cool and a neat place to live in before all that.

And I'm not a grammar bully.  Though I notice a lack of use of proper punctuation...heh.

« on: August 03, 2006, 09:18:19 am »
If you had to live in a video game world, where would you live?

Assuming that you can deal with the world's physics, atmosphere, are able to ingest its food, etc. and be about as skilled and equipped closely to how the main characters in those game worlds do so as not to be killed off in the first few minutes that you are there.

(Now, right off the bat I'm going to exclude the DOA Extreme games, the Sexy Beach games, the Artificial Girl games, or any game like those.

Also excluded are games without worlds, like Brain Age, Big Brain Academy, or any other quiz/trivia/brain games.  I guess that would also exclude Tetris and the like.

Games that include Earth aren't particularly interesting for the sake of conversation, unless that version of Earth is radically different enough (a normal sports game would be boring, but most superhero games less so).)

I will mention my choice of world later...(I'm at work!)
