Map Requests / RE: map requests for super mario bros 2
« on: May 23, 2009, 08:11:15 am »
I think some people would still want to view the maps without any labels or enemies just to view the background and some people want to see the enemies, so I see no problem in having two sets of maps to cater to everyone.

However for SMB2 the maps on this site already have enemies.  There are no maps of SMB2 with just the background and there are no maps showing the items for SMB2 currently on this site.  That means there could potentially become 3 sets of maps for that game if someone else submitted maps with just the background and someone submitted maps with the items.  I think that is a bit much, so that is why I have not submitted any of my maps for that game.

However if I map a game that only has background maps on this site I will typically submit a set that is labeled with enemy and item locations, for those people who want to use the map as a guide to get through the game.

I think it makes since to have up to two versions of each map.  One with just the background, and one that is labeled with enemies, items and stuff along those lines.

There are two main reasons people like to look at these maps.  One is to enjoy the "art" of the game and see the backgrounds.  The other is as a functional guide to get through the game or find where stuff is in the game.

I think having more then two versions is a bit much however.  For example a version with just background, one with just enemies, one with just items, and yet another with both enemies and items.  I think that would be way too much clutter.

You have been doing a great job so far when deciding what maps to keep, and what maps to have two versions of.

The problem is I'm creating maps for my website as well as this one.  So even if I had permission to start with someones map as a base and then added sprites to them, it would not work for posting on my site, or for me to make money from selling a poster of that map.  Typically I will upload maps to this site if there are no maps for that game yet, or if my maps add enough information (like showing enemy and item locations) that 2 versions of maps would be welcome.  I often make two versions of maps for my website for labeled and unlabeled maps.  However for SMB2 the maps here already have enemy locations, so I would just be adding items.  So I was not sure if that was a big enough difference to warrant posting a second set of maps here.  What happened with Mega Man 6?

I also ran into another new on in World 2-2.  It is the one that kind of looks like a pumpkin but is red.  I'm guessing it is either a gourd or a pumpkin.  Does anyone know what this is called?

I did see the new Star Trek movie.  I thought they did a good job on it.  If any of you heard of Star Trek Phase II, I have been helping out on that project, and the person who plays Kirk in that was an extra in the movie so it was kewl seeing him pop up on the bridge in a few scenes.

It's hard to believe it's already been ten years since Episode I came out.  No where near as good as the first three movies, witch are actually the middle three movies.  I wonder if they will ever do the last three.

Another question.  I just got to World 2-1 where you pull out the vegetable and instead of the normal white one the manual calls "Unripened Vegetable" it is smaller and red.  Does any one know the name of this item.  It is not in the manual.

I have started making SMB2 maps that show all the items you can get.  They also show all enemy locations.  I only have the first 2 levels done so far, but I will be working to finish all the levels for that game.  Since the maps on this site already show the enemy locations I was not sure if it was worth have a 2nd set of maps where the only difference was showing the items.  If people want me to I can upload them to this site.  If not you can find the maps on my site at: http://www.nesmaps.com

You can also just turn off the sprites before captureing the screen shot and that solves the problems of multiple characters and enimies.  I have it set for F4 to do that, however I don't remember if I set that Hot Key up or if that was a default.  But FCEUX can turn off the sprites layer.

Basically you would need to first take screen shots and paste them together.  First do the stage with no sprites (enemies, items and stuff like that).  There is an option to turn them off in FCEUX.

Then after that make a map with all the area cleared showing all the sprites you want to be on the map, like the items.  Then place the map with the sprites on a layer on top of the first one you did.

Finally cut out everything from the top layer except the sprites(items) you want to see in the final map.  There are more ways to do this, but this is one method I use.

Does Birdo or Ostro show up in any games other then SMB2 and Doki Doki Panic?

Here a couple codes for Robowarrior:

Address: 004D   Value: 09   Big Bomb Item

Address: 0066   Value: 09   Life Item

Address: 01C6   Value: FF   Life Energy

The first one gives you infinity Big Bombs to make clearing levels easier.  The second gives you infinity Healing Life Items so if you get low on energy you can just heal as many times as you need to.  The last is a code to stop your health from dropping.  However the big chunks of heal next to the heal bar can still go down so it is still possible to die.  I have not found a code yet to stop the big chunks of health from going down.

These codes were found on the FCEUX emulator.  That should help mapping this game.

Thanks for all your help everyone, I'm capturing sprites from that game and I want to give them the proper names.

Did they mix up Ostro/Birdo?  In both the game and the Manual for SMB2 they have Ostro as the boss that spits out eggs.  Should it be the other way around?  I'm sure you are right about the Clawgrip and Clawglip since the Japanese can't tell the difference between the the sound of an "L" or an "R" in their language.

Map Requests / RE: Gauntlet - NES

Hi, I made the first 30 maps.  I currently have some other mapping projects I'm working on, but I do plan on getting the the rest of the Gauntlet levels at some point.
