FlyingArmor has mapped Hydlide for the NES!  Yes, another unusual request.  We all know this game is infamous.  But at least it's done!  Perhaps there is hope that every official NES game can be mapped after all, if this one is.  That's a commentary on the game itself, not of FlyingArmor's map, which is perfect as usual.

Thanks again, FlyingArmor!

You're most welcome, Jon! :D

Speaking of the NES atlas, I haven't updated my spreadsheet that tracks the completeness of the American released titles since February 2020. There's probably been a number of NES games that've been submitted since then, so I'll be sure to find some time to update the numbers. ;)

Speaking of the NES atlas, I haven't updated my spreadsheet that tracks the completeness of the American released titles since February 2020. There's probably been a number of NES games that've been submitted since then, so I'll be sure to find some time to update the numbers. ;)

My count of official North American NES games featured on VGMaps.com is 322 games.  I didn't check the completeness, just counted the title images.  So hopefully I don't have a title screen here for some reason that I don't currently have maps for.  That number could be 323 if you count Conquest Of The Crystal Palace, which is listed here by its Japanese name, Matendouji, which GameFAQs lists as "Maten Douji" and now I'm wondering why the submitter's name is different than the name on the maps, and if I should just list it as "Conquest Of The Crystal Palace" if the maps are the same...

The official count of North American NES cartridges is 677 games, but a few of those are compilations.  Still, we're close to halfway to getting at least one thing from each game (released in North America).

Then I've also counted:
9 PAL region games,
98 Japanese games, and
49 Unlicensed/bootleg/cancelled/unreleased games.

Hmm... my spreadsheet gives me 319 games, so I probably missed a few when updating it. I'll go through it again when I have some time to spare.

But with what I have at the moment, the current total percentage coverage is 47.47% right now, and that's including both complete (44.79%) and incomplete (2.68%) map sets. So it looks like it went up from 41.69% in February 2019 by 5.78%. We're slowly getting there!  ;D

You're welcome!  :)

As mentioned in the email, I'm surprised I don't have more NES RPGs listed.  Unless you count stuff like Majou Densetsu II: Daimashikyou Galious (J) on the Famicom.  But I guess it's not surprising if all the popular ones are done already.

I was thinking about adding Ultima (V): Warriors Of Destiny, but I don't think I personally want that as much as anything else listed.  You've heard me say so many times that I LOVE Ultima VI: The False Prophet, but I have had trouble getting into any of the earlier games, to be honest, and I'm generally not sure about the console conversions.  So Ultima (III): Exodus and Ultima (V): Warriors Of Destiny on the NES don't pique my interest much.  But Ultima (IV): Quest Of The Avatar, which you have already mapped, actually looks like it's meant to be a NES RPG, and so it's one of those games that I've been curious about, that maybe I should get to it one of these days.

I'm sure I can think of more stuff on the NES that I'm surprised we don't yet have, since we're not even halfway there (though we are close).  There are a lot of generic/unmemorable games (as is the case of most platforms, especially if they're really popular), so I don't know if we will ever get enough interest to map absolutely everything - unless people are dedicated enough to make that an actual goal.  Are you saying you'd like to lead that effort, FlyingArmor?  It would certainly be neat to have all the games mapped for one platform, and the NES is popular enough to be a good one to put effort behind!

The NES version of Ultima V is so incredibly lackluster that it's more or less not worth looking at; the computer versions are far superior in pretty much every way. Though saying that, I do wanna try my hand at mapping it anyway, along with Ultima: Exodus, and maybe even the SNES port of The Black Gate while we're at it, haha.

Yeah, Ultima IV on the NES plays very much like a JRPG, and as I was playing through it to at least get to one of the dungeons, I noticed a lot of changes from the computer versions that I liked quite a bit. It streamlines a lot of stuff, like not having to mix reagents before casting spells, not having to worry about food, etc. One aspect I really liked was being able to equip both melee and long range weapons at the same time, so no need unready and ready them in the middle of combat if there's need for that. But compared to the PC version, some things were stripped out. While I only have mapped one dungeon so far, the magic fields, and a number of dungeon rooms were removed. It at least made mapping it easier.

While I won't promise anything, I'll at least tackle whatever catches my fancy, like the aforementioned Ultima games. :D

Alwa's Awakening, a NES-like Metroidvania which has been on my request list, is on GOG's giveaway today.  I think it's for everyone that uses GOG, but it's worth looking into.  Probably should have GOG Galaxy installed if you are a PC gamer anyway...  I earlier bought this on Steam, so I guess I now have two copies...

And also available on Steam, and on sale right now on GOG, is another version, "Alwa's Awakening: The 8-Bit Edition".  This version is literally provided as an NES ROM, playable in an NES emulator, or a flash cart to play on an actual NES.  The original game is very NES-like to begin with, so the NES ROM is very faithful.  It's made to fit in the NES's resolution, so it's downsized in that sense, but then there's also additional content, including new areas and new music.  I'm not hugely into aftermarket NES games, but here, that seems like a good fit and a neat option.  Now I wonder if I should also request maps for the NES version because of the new content, but that's just strange to me because I don't think I've ever requested anything unlicensed/homebrew/aftermarket before, in preference for "official" games.  And I guess depending on how people map, like if they are good at extracting assets from the NES ROM, then maybe the NES one will be easier to map?

Spanettone has mapped all of Drill Dozer!  This GBA game with a built-in Rumble Pak has been longtime requested.  Sorry that I couldn't get these maps up when I received them yesterday (May 6).

Seven years ago, almost to the day (well, May 4, 2016, so, two days off) TerraEsperZ submitted the first half of the game.  It's nice to now have a complete set!

Thanks, Spanettone!

ScHlAuChi and George S have mapped out the delightful Monster World IV (J), and John Brain mapped out the beat-em-up, Streets Of Rage 3!  Thanks for the Genesis love!

A couple of HUGE maps for DS games just went up...

A 160 MB JPEG image showing all of Johto as seen in Pokémon: HeartGold Version and Pokémon: SoulSilver Version, the DS remakes of second-gen main Pokémon games from the Game Boy Color, and
a 154 MB JPEG image showing all of Sinnoh as seen in Pokémon: Diamond Version and Pokémon: Pearl Version, the DS games of fourth-gen Pokémon.

I've always felt that we need more Pokémon games mapped, and it's good to see that the slight foray into three dimensions with the DS entries isn't an unsurmountable obstacle keeping these from being mapped.  So thanks for these, G.E.R.!

I check it and compared two games on a level editor. There aren't fundamental differences between Platinum and Pearl versions, I found only textures differences:

Gray or brown sidewalk

Blue or violet jetty

Gray or light-yellow road

Buildings design

If you will play the Platinum version you can use the Pearl map.

Well, true, but for people who look at these maps because they want to see the actual graphics... then I would consider Platinum to be worth its own entry.

It's the same reason that I put Pokémon: Emerald Version as a separate entry apart from the Pokémon: Ruby & Sapphire Versions.  I think anyone playing Platinum would know they can look at Diamond/Pearl maps for navigation purposes, but if I list Platinum with them, that could be confusing for people that want the Platinum graphics.

G.E.R. has submitted full map sets for various Genesis games in the past few days, including my request for Gunstar Heroes!

This cult classic is also on the Genesis Mini, so, while it is of course awesome to finally see mapped in any case, it's nice to also be able to have that checked off there too.  Thanks yet again, G.E.R.!
