62  General Boards / Mapping Tips/Guides / Re: how best to map LAYERS? on: June 02, 2013, 05:40:38 PM
yes its easy to edit repeating pattern background layers but when the hole layer is one big picture, what then?

but for something like this its bet to edit it, yes?
63  General Boards / Mapping Tips/Guides / Re: how best to map LAYERS? on: June 02, 2013, 06:12:52 AM
I use mame and pres F4 to view the layers. I have constructed the levels layers but have not put them (overlapped them) together to form the full map.

The question is how would you overlap the layers that are of different sizes to form a map from beginning to end?

I know that the main foreground is the sprites interactive layer that defines the size of the map and you have to assemble it correctly but the other layers are mostly to give the effect of depth.

horizontal scrollers like E-swat(stage5) and super Contra(stage3) for starters. As well as other games of that nature.
I wanted to get into this topic for some time but for get to do so.

Games with a lot of parallax scrolling layers are a bit of a problem to map because some payers are bigger than others and they don't aline properly as well as some just completely cover other layer so you cant see them at all so...
Whats the best way to deal with them?
Keep the layers separate? Crop and adjust them to fit so they look like how it is when you play the game? a little of both?
How would you handle it?
66  General Boards / Map Requests / Re: Landstalker on: April 05, 2013, 01:07:19 PM
I would like to map it but right now my main project is Alundra and that looks like it will take some time. The problem with landstalker is picking the right emulator for the job.
67  General Boards / Maps In Progress / Re: Alundra on: March 26, 2013, 05:34:30 AM
what emulator are you using?  I'm using "PSX emulator 1.13", no plug-in settings to bother with.

Is anyone ells doing Alundra? I have mapped the game up to Magyscar.
My main motivation for mapping it was to get all the items in the game (some thing I was never able to do before)
69  General Boards / Mapping Tips/Guides / Re: how big can a map be? on: March 24, 2013, 02:04:02 PM
there are places in the map that you offload the POWs you collected on to helicopters. I think the in game map (shown when you die or beet the game) shows them as flag check points.

Is any one going to map landstalker or is this game up for grabs.
71  General Boards / Mapping Tips/Guides / how big can a map be? on: March 24, 2013, 01:22:39 PM
I am mapping an arcade game that is a vertical shooter there is no levels just one long area from beginning to end.The map dimensions are, X= 416 and it's Y could go up to 16 to 19000 pixels. Is this to big for the site? should I cut the map in segments?

I too am planing on doing the full overwold map of Alundra some time (also doing other maps in the game).
It wont be difficult for me. Ys2 special and Brave Prove are much bigger and more difficult.

Hi, I'm a new member but contributor for awhile now. My name is George or George s as you have seen on my maps compiler/creator name ( GHS is my initials, not a nickname).
I have bin mapping for some time now and putting them up on VGMaps (over 2 years i think), but just now I decided to join the forum. Huh? Tongue (should have done it sooner)
Even before VGMaps I was doing hand drawn maps of games (one of them is Darkmere at way back in the 8 and 16-bit era (mostly dungeon crawlers).
My fascination with game maps started with the maps in video game magazines like Nintendo Power and EGM.
What I'm hoping to get out of VGMaps is help and support in doing maps more efficiently and translating other languages in games (like items and areas) to English.
I'm into action adventure games with a little RPG elements to it whether its side, top or 3D but I like the aesthetic look of 2D isometric games (sometimes 3D, if the art is good).

So that's it. I hope all goes well here for me and thanks for your time.  Smiley
