Terra, is there a way in FCEUltra to disable the water cycling?  If not, how do you choose which of the frames will be used in the map?  Is the choice arbitrary?

For me, college graduation did me in.

I stayed constant through high school and college.  Ate poorly, but the walk to and from classes burned it off.  In fact, I walked about 2 miles from a free parking lot to campus during college (unless it rained, when I took the bus that also visited that lot).

After graduation, I got a desk job where I sit and type on a computer all day.  Surprisingly enough, the weight started to accumulate in the chair.

I'm trying to get myself back in the habit of walking every day, to see if I can at least stay constant.  Eventually, I'll work on burning off some of the excess.  So far, so good.

I'm even contemplating riding my bicycle to work.  It's about 5 miles each way, but the terrain is flat, and the back-roads aren't so congested as to make it dangerous.  We'll see how that pans out.

So, I'm fat, huh Inty?!  Geez, nice to see you too!

Just kidding...I am.  The doctor calls it "obese", meaning I'm more than just overweight.  Don't get me wrong, I don't need a TLC special documenting my rehabilitation from a 600 pound man to my "normal" weight of 180.  I'm just well fed.

And as for out-of-shape?  I like to consider myself as in-shape.  A round shape, that is.  And we all know how circles are the perfect shape.

I was keeping my eye out for the launch of Mario DDR, and I wonder if I missed it.  Has anyone tried it, and is it good for a workout?  I'm not a DDR-junkie, but I have been intrigued by it, and since I like Mario, this one in particular was appealing.

Mapping Tips/Guides / RE: How do you guys make these maps?

I started a thread on this earlier this week.  You might check for the topic "Mapping Tools" in the Message Board Help forum.  Here's a link:

For the most part, I'm guessing it's pasting together screen captures, with certain layers turned off (like the character sprites).  Good mappers will also work to ensure that moving parts look consistent, like moving water or flames, so that the edges where the captures are pasted together aren't detectable.

I haven't done any maps worth posting, but I'm looking to start doing some in the near future.  Let's keep pestering those veteran mappers until they reveal their secrets to us!

Inty is right.  The forums are new, so there is much to be said.  Keep checking in for more information, and we look forward to seeing the contributions you make, both socially, and videogamemapally.

What kinds of things do you do when you're busy gaming?

Recently, I've taken to walking while gaming.  I hop on the treadmill, fire up the playstation, and pound out a mile or more while beating up enemies.

Yesterday, I was playing DW7, and was fighting some bosses in a tower.  By the time I had beaten them, collected the spoils, and gotten back to town to save my game, 30 minutes had passed. With the treadmill set at 3.0 mph (2.5 is too slow, and 3.5 is too distracting from the game), I finished a mile and a half without even thinking about it.  Good thing too.  I could stand to lose a few (dozen) pounds.

In Super Mario Brothers (NES), level 4-3 featured large mushrooms that Mario (or Luigi) walked on.

That's a great start.  Thanks, Terra.

I've been using ZSnes and VBA for a while, and I used to use Nesticle, but recently got something I like better (I think it's called Jnes).  So for the most part, I'm on the right track.

So you actually pull the maps out of the map browser, and not screenshot the current window?  If you ever do screenshots, do you display at 1x Zoom?  I generally play at 4x, so the screen is readble on my 1280x1024 display (otherwise things get tiny).

For MSPaint, I assume you're pasting in at 800% zoom to ensure the edges line up properly?  Seems like that could be a huge canvas you're working on at times.  I'll give it a go and see what happens.  I also have IrfanView.

I picked up MS Digital Image Suite the other day.  It has a feature that allows you to take panaromic shots and piece them together into one large image.  Does anyone know if this piecing together will distort the seams of the screenshots when they are merged?

JonLeung, does CompuPic Pro offer anything superior to Microsoft's product?

3. In Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (GBA), the mushroom is a rock-like object that blocks your path.  It can only be picked up in Autumn.

Gaming / Game: Easter Mushrooms?

The mushroom can be delicious and deadly.  In the world of Nintendo, though, it is more than just a food.  See how many mushrooms you can dig up.

Name the game, where to find the mushroom, and what the purpose of it is.  Be nice and take turns.  Only post one mushroom at a time (even if there is more than one type in a game), and wait for someone else to post one before posting another.  There's plenty to go around.

I'll start.

1. In Super Mario Brothers (NES), the mushroom item can be found in ? blocks, and it causes Mario to become big.

Seeing as this is a forum for a website whose primary purpose is the creation and hosting of video game maps, I was wondering...

What tools are the contributors using to create maps from their video games?

I know the job can be done (albeit slowly and painfully) using MSPaint, or the Mac equivalent.  Are there other tools that make the mapping process easier and faster?

What emulators are generally used for these mapping projects (my interest is in NES,SNES,GBA)?

What resolution are the maps usually drawn in, and are they scaled down to make the image more managable?

Are there special considerations that need to be accounted for with regard to water cycling, flame flickering, and other "moving" parts?  Generally speaking, how are these issues addressed?

Do mapping projects also include creating guides and charts to accompany the maps?  For instance, the original Dragon Warrior had an overworld map, and dungeon/town maps.  Are monster and item guides also useful and/or recommended for inclusion on this site?

Is the first one Mario from the Super Mario Sunshine game?  He is mistaken for the dark shadow who has painted all over the city.  I haven't finished the game, so I don't know if they turn out to be the same person after all (hence the "not mistaken" part).

Gaming / RE: Dragon Warrior VII

I've been spoiled.  Emulation at 500% is the only way to play RPGs.

Don't get me wrong.  Dragon Warrior VII is truly amazing.  So far, I am enjoying the game very much, and I have only beaten the first monster-filled cave.

My only complaint is that battles are so SLOW.  That, and the lack of turbo on my one-handed controller means that I actually have to pay attention in battles, and not just wail on the enemies mercilessly.

Thanks for the review Dan.  I am finding the game to be enjoyable.  But I fear that my enjoyment will suffer because of the lengthy delays in battle sequences.

As long as the game comes with free vodka, I don't mind!

NINTENDO: O Gamers of Wii, we have brought you a new system. Will you play now?

THRAXIAN: It is a good system. I like the controllers particularly,... but there is one small problem.

NINTENDO: What is that?

THRAXIAN: We are now... no longer the Gamers who play 'Wii'.

GAMERS OF WII: Wii! Shh!

THRAXIAN: Shh! We are now the Gamers Who Say 'Ecky- ecky- ecky- ecky- pikang- zoop- boing- goodem- zoo- owli- zhiv'.

(translated: why can't you just call it a Revolution?!)

RANDOM GAMER: Wii!

THRAXIAN: Therefore, we must give you a test.

NINTENDO: What is this test, O Gamers of-- Gamers who till recently played 'Wii'?

THRAXIAN: Firstly, you must find... another name!

[dramatic chord]
