Title: JonLeung's Requests
Post by: JonLeung on October 19, 2019, 01:38:07 PM
The past few years have been slow, so I figured I'd throw in a topic of my requests, for what it's worth. These forums don't have a history of fulfilling requests, but I figured I'd at least get these out there, if someone's hankering to map.

There are already many requests here, and normally I'd prefer requests to be in their own topic, but as I run VGMaps, I feel I have some clout to say "I'd really like to see these mapped." Does that count for anything? It'd be nice if these maps will be on the site eventually, though there's no actual rush. Though I'd probably rush to get them up in my own excitement...

Some have been requested before, so I'm "seconding" those requests. There are obvious (popular) requests and obscure ones (I enjoyed but not well-known). Some may be partially mapped but appear abandoned. Some have technical challenges. But I think most of these are reasonable. I may update this at any time. Take them or leave them; they are what they are.

Hey JonLeung, it's been a while.

I don't want to make any promises on map projects because I tend to not follow through and especially since I just don't have that much available time anymore.

But I have a few projects from your list that are pretty far along and it's good to be reminded that there is interest in them. I tend to forget just how many unfinished project I have lying around...

The ones I'd like to commit myself to are the following:

Shantae (GBC): The whole overworld is 99% done but the labyrinths are only about 40% done. I'll see what I can do about it this year.
Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis): I'd really like to finish this, especially since I was on a roll for a while with almost 40% of the game mapped.

I've got a few other projects that might possibly be continued/done this year, but I won't even bother mentioning them otherwise it'll just be disappointing  when I don't deliver.

I looked at this list. There is no games familiar to me, but some projects is interested for me.
I can ripped Super Mario 64 (N64) with using Quad64 level editor. It can visualisate a full technical maps on one screen. As an example, map for Wing Cap area:

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (GBC) including an unused levels.

I've been working on Dragon Warrior II on and off for the past year. I just have a few more dungeons to map out, then labeling can ensue.

Secret of Mana is also a game I've been thinking of working on for a long while. With all the hard work done thanks to Tropicon, arranging and labelling the maps should be a piece of cake.

And I see you're requesting the PC version of Ultima VI. :) Seeing that it will be 30 years old this year on June 1st, it would be a fitting time to have it all mapped out by then. Though listing out every item that can be picked up is going to be madness... I'll try mapping out a small area, like Cove, and see how crazy it gets! :D

Thanks, FlyingArmor!

Finishing off Dragon Warrior: Part 2 (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/index.htm#DragonWarriorPart2) completes the Dragon Warrior NES quadrilogy!

I'm not sure how to deal with fulfilled requests from the list, but for now I'll just strike it through with a thanks, and keep that up for at least a little bit instead of unceremoniously removing it immediately...

Hadoken!  Thanks to George s, arcade fan, who has mapped the classic Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#StreetFighterIIWorldWarrior) (Arcade).  As you can see, I've also updated the background of that page to Suzaku Castle, Ryu's arena.

Will Mallia has mapped the classic The Island Of Dr. Brain (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/PC/index.htm#IslandOfDrBrain) (PC).  I don't know if it is as much of a classic as Castle Of Dr. Brain (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/PC/index.htm#CastleOfDrBrain) (which he also mapped the day before), but I believe I played the sequel first, back in the day, and replayed it more.  Good times!  I actually played it again recently (like within the past year) and on the hardest setting, but the copy I got is messed up at literally the final puzzle and therefore unfinishable...

Okay so I hope I'm not promising in vain but I think there's a good chance I might eventually check another request on that list *eventually*...

I don't want to bog down this thread with a ton of unnecessary details (I *do* tend to rant a lot) but I've been working on mapping Equinox (SNES) for the past few weeks. Long story short, this game finally forced me out of my comfort zone and I started using the BizHawk emulator which has made mapping this game possible. I've found a way to render the Mode 7 overworld in an isometric perspective with pixel-perfect accuracy (better than the actual game) and adding sprites over it as I go. I only have one dungeon done, but a lot of the time was spent experimenting with presentation so the rest *should* go faster and smoother but with me, you never know...

So yeah, I'm looking forward to sharing my progress in a dedicated thread :).

Thanks, to G.E.R. we now have maps of Kirby: Squeak Squad (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/DS/index.htm#KirbySqueakSquad).  It's not the only DS Kirby game that G.E.R. has recently mapped, because I forgot to mention that we also have Kirby: Super Star Ultra (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/DS/index.htm#KirbySuperStarUltra), and upgraded version of the Super NES game (of the same name minus the "Ultra") (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/SuperNES/index.htm#KirbySuperStar).

TerraEsperZ, I am very much looking forward to any Equinox maps you can do...

Today I edited the first post to have the release dates for the PC games to be clear about which ones I'm requesting.  Noticing that there aren't currently any games I'm requesting from the first decade of the 2000s (reminds me about what I was saying about point and click games in that same time period (https://youtu.be/fxMXr3MSAuI?t=392)), and that the games in the 2010s are retro-style games that resemble late '80s or '90s games.

Since near to the start of VGMaps.com's origin, or maybe 2006, only one original map for Zelda's Adventure made up the entirety of our CD-i Atlas.

But finally, yesterday, thanks to Jackster's submission of ripped maps from Link: The Faces Of Evil (https://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/CD-i/index.htm#LinkFacesOfEvil) that atlas isn't quite as sparse anymore.  And that page now has a nice new background, too!

I'm super happy someone finally mapped one of the first two CD-i Zelda games.

Those two games might have horrible animations but the background graphics are gorgeous!

I was super happy to actually beat one of the CD-i Zelda games TBH (unlike my first attempt many years ago when I use to own an actual CD-i myself). But yeah, I do plan on making more maps for the CD-i when I get the chance, but first I need to finish up Shining Wisdom.

Those two games might have horrible animations but the background graphics are gorgeous!

That's true.  On one hand, the games are maligned for their weird animated sequences, combined with them being for the unpopular and otherwise almost entirely unknown CD-i (especially in contrast to the very mainstream and very popular PlayStation of which its origins are linked) and the bizarreness that Nintendo would lend out the rights of their otherwise incredibly-polished and popular AAA franchises ever, not for one, but MULTIPLE games.  The lack of availability of an actual CD-i adds even more intrigue to this, as does Nintendo's pretending that this never happened, so most people only know it for what makes it weird.  (Sort of like the Star Wars Holiday Special, which is infamously bad, even joked as such by many people even if they haven't experienced it, though it does have its place in canon, and a LEGO "sequel" that comes out today on Disney+.)

But on the other hand, the face value of the maps themselves are that they are actually quite cool.  Imagine, these were done by an artist or artists who are no longer limited to building worlds out of tiles.  While you can tell there is still a need to create traversable landscapes, they went wild with the colours and shapes (compared to the "blocky" nature of tile-based graphics).  At this point, pre-Ocarina Of Time, there were only a handful of Zelda games to reference, plus their art, and likely some inspiration from The Legend Of Zelda cartoon segment on the Friday episodes of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.  Considering that, I don't think they did bad at all.  I guess now we're used to Zelda games being all over the place with their style, so this actually isn't too weird, really.  I like them!  Still have to really play them (sheesh, what kind of Zelda fan am I?), but I can at least say, and with Jackster's maps more confidently so, that this at least looks good!

Thanks! Let me tell you all that that Tolemac map took FOREVER to save. The original PSD file was almost 160 MB big and would take 10-20 seconds to save it every time. There were even times when my computer monitor will black out while it's in the middle of saving. It was kind of frightening and frustrating.

Jackster's submission of ripped maps from Zelda: The Wand Of Gamelon (https://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/CD-i/index.htm#ZeldaWandOfGamelon) completes the Triforce of CD-i Zelda games!

To think this was all in the span of only two weeks, as a fortnight ago we first got Link: The Faces Of Evil (https://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/CD-i/index.htm#LinkFacesOfEvil) maps, but now have the unmarked maps of that as well.

Thanks so much, Jackster!

Relatively new contributor Jackster can do more than just CD-i games, and submitted maps from Kirby: Nightmare In Dream Land (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/GBA/index.htm#KirbyNightmareInDreamLand) (GBA), the remake of the NES game, Kirby's Adventure.

There are a few Kirby games still not mapped, so I'm glad that Jackster's Map Projects topic (https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/index.php?topic=3578.0) shows that he plans to do three more!

I returned to our community after long time break and read all discussions on the forum.

First, I want to thank JonLeung for recomendation
If you haven't played Kirby: Super Star before, you should!  It's one of the better Kirby games, if not the best (though the DS remake, Kirby: Super Star Ultra, has even more stuff).
The game is really interesting, I like it.

So, what is games is need to rip now? May be it need to some Kirby's game, or Sega Genesis Mini games?

Jackster has done it again - another Kirby GBA game under his belt - this time, it's Kirby & The Amazing Mirror (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/GBA/index.htm#KirbyTheAmazingMirror) (GBA).  I love Metroidvanias!

George s loves arcade games and has finished Dragon Buster (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#DraginBuster) (Arcade).  I hear it repeats some rounds after Round 12.

Jackster has completed a non-Kirby game... though it's cute and colourful all the same.  (Hey, that rhymes!)  We now have SmartBall (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/SuperNES/index.htm#SmartBall) (Super NES).

Funny thing is, as I was copying the Skyblazer (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/SuperNES/index.htm#Skyblazer) table nearby to make the SmartBall one, coincidentally it turned out to be the same developer - Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc.!

Jackster knocks out another Kirby game, one that I'm surprised we didn't have any maps for until now, Kirby's Dream Land 3 (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/SuperNES/index.htm#KirbysDreamLand3) (Super NES)!  Love the tips for getting each of the Heart Stars!  5-2 features Samus Aran and the Metroids from the Metroid series, and there are other cameos like the Japanese characters Donbe and Hikari.  Thanks for doing this so thoroughly!

zagato blackfist took out my only three ColecoVision requests (as of now, or rather, just now, since they're now complete)...  Donkey Kong (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/ColecoVision/index.htm#DonkeyKong) (our family's first video game!), Front Line (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/ColecoVision/index.htm#FrontLine) and Jumpman Junior (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/ColecoVision/index.htm#JumpmanJunior), two of my brother's favourites on this classic console.  Thanks so much for the memories!

Cleeem has taken care of the rare Game Boy Color game, Shantae (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/GB-GBC/index.htm#Shantae) (GBC)!  It has since spawned several sequels, but for a while it really felt like a one-off cult classic.  Limited Run Games has recently rereleased this as an actual playable GBC cartridge, so at least a few more people might be experiencing this (unless they are just collectors that buy things just to never open them).  In any case, thanks, Cleeem!

Refresh with Ctrl+F5 or Shift+F5.

G.E.R. has bunched the main Mother 3 maps into large "A", "B", "C" and "D" maps.  Then the rest are mostly in-game maps.  Are there any maps of these that are not showing up for you?

Despite today's date, no joke, all of Britannia and the Gargoyle World of Ultima VI: The False Prophet (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/PC/index.htm#UltimaVIFalseProphet) is now completely mapped!  The PC version is a personal favourite of mine, it's nice to now have every pixel here.  Confession: I don't think I've ever finished this legitimately, I'm always tempted to say "spam" x3 and "humbug" to Iolo...  We have FlyingArmor to thank for all these area maps, which must have been a lot of work, especially listing all those items!  Zerker contributed the world map of Britannia way back in 2012 which is awesome too.  Thanks again!

George s, who loves arcade games, mapped my recent request of the Namco arcade classic The Tower Of Druaga (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#TowerOfDruaga).  Thanks so much!

Coincidentally, Pac-Man 99 was just announced the other day and released yesterday for the Switch.  At 2:01 in the trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ2c-6CJ-tM&t=121s), you can see there is even a The Tower Of Druaga theme for it!

George s is keeping the Pac-Train going by fulfilling my requests for Baby Pac-Man (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#BabyPacMan), Jr PacMan (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#JrPacMan), Ms Pac-Man (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#MsPacMan), and Super Pac-Man (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#SuperPacMan).  Okay, I didn't request Baby Pac-Man specifically, but sure, I'm not going to say no to more of the Pac-Family!  Though there is a physical pinball element to that one, so it is certainly a unique game.

Thanks yet again, George s!

George s fulfills some more classic arcade requests, including Frogger (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#Frogger), Q*bert (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#Qbert), and the original Pac-Man (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#PacMan), which we didn't have until now, believe it or not!  Yes, the original arcade version!  Isn't it, like, one of the most iconic video games ever?  Also, though I didn't specifically request it, he also mapped Pac & Pal (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/index.htm#PacPal) for good measure, because why not get some more "Pac" games packed away?  Thanks as always, George s!

(I'll be publishing a review of "Coin-Op: The Arcade Guide" on my YouTube channel, most likely later today.  One of my concerns is the lack of coverage of classic games such as Pac-Man, Frogger, and Q*bert.  Then I realized how bad it looks saying that but not having maps of those games here on VGMaps.com...)

While most Pac-Man stages look identically to the mapped stage 1, it also has the infamous final level 256 (https://pacman.fandom.com/wiki/Map_256_Glitch) which looks half different. If it needs an extra map though is debatable because it is unbeatable, even with a map. :)
Title: Re: JonLeung's Requests
Post by: JonLeung on May 17, 2021, 07:59:27 AM
I would certainly accept a map of that.  Perhaps there could be a raw one and one that highlights the areas that Pac-Man can actually traverse.

Is the proper name "Maze 256" or "Level 256" or "Round 256" or "Stage 256"?  I always like to use the in-game terminology, but if there isn't any, I would prefer to use something more accurate, like "Maze" in this particular case.  I would also use "Level" if that is indeed the accepted term for something like this that I imagine must be talked about a lot, I just usually avoid "Level" unless it is explicitly said somewhere within the game, as I feel the word is overused.
