ORIGINAL POST:

The Sega Genesis Mini comes out in less than a month, loaded with 40 classic Genesis games.  As with the NES Classic Edition (https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/index.php?topic=2194.0) and the Super NES Classic Edition (https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/index.php?topic=2254.0), it would be cool to see how far along we've already come to mapping this and how many more could still be mapped.

Thanks to G.E.R. for letting me know that Alex Kidd In The Enchanted Castle wasn't actually completed, as it was missing the aerial "To The Sky" stage, and then submitting it so that the first game alphabetically is now actually complete!  To think I was wrong in thinking that was complete for 13 years when it actually wasn't, sheesh...

I think that DarkWolf don't ripped this level, because it non-platformed level without objects. It includes only three small platform and enemies with a bombs or 200 JPY.

Another thing surprises me. It seems that SEGA abandoned Sonic 3 Knuckles, because this game don't rerelised in 201x years (along STH-1, STH-2, STH-CD, SA1 and SA2).
May be the reason is remakes of this levels is placed in other games? Only two levels (Carvaval Night and Launght Base) hasn't various remakes in a last games.

Concerning Sonic the Hedgehog 3, there (possibly/most likely) seems to be a long unresolved issue concerning music rights, specifically because of the involvement of Michael Jackson (there are many recent YouTube videos on the subject).

Given how complicated and expensive music rights settlements can be as well as Michael's involvement which is still being denied officially, it is most likely the reason why Sonic 3 & Knuckles hasn't been ported to any modern systems, only emulated. It also explains why the Sonic & Knuckles Collection for PC released in 1997 featured different music for several levels that included samples most likely taken from Jackson (Carnival Night, Launch Base) or where the music is basically an existing unreleased track (Hard Times by The Jetzons for Ice Cap).

Congratulations on the 20000th post, TerraEsperZ!  At least, that's what I assume "msg20000" refers to...

Anyway, The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time had a chant in the Fire Temple removed and EarthBound also had some music that was replaced in later versions.  So to Nintendo it was apparently worth replacing the offending/infringing bits.

So while Sega could have included Sonic The Hedgehog 3 with some kind of similar workaround, maybe they just don't think it's worth the trouble to replace the music, or fundamentally don't want to change anything about a classic game.

I find the Earthworm Jim maps for SNES (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/SuperNES/index.htm#EarthwormJim) in the atlas. If I remember it right, the SNES/Genesis maps is similary.
But I see that there are one map for EJ2 is missing. It's a not-platformed level between Villi People and Puppy Love Act 2. I just wanted to play this game a long time and I think that I will rip this level on next week.

Thanks, G.E.R., for submitted full maps of the Genesis versions of Earthworm Jim (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#EarthwormJim) and its sequel (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#EarthwormJim2), which I put up last night.  Surprised they haven't been mapped until now, and the first one checks another one off this list.

I guess I didn't mention yet: my brother got me a Sega Genesis Mini this past Christmas - though the only game I made time to play fully so far is Mega Man: The Wily Wars.  It was fun but I didn't think the three new Robot Masters were super great - but I guess they still have a legacy, because I more recently bought Sonic & Mega Man: Worlds Collide (as well as Worlds Unite, its sequel), a comic series involving Mega Man and Sonic's worlds, obviously, and (though I'm sure they showed up in the Mega Man comics earlier,) I like that the three new Robot Masters are collectively referred to as the "Genesis Unit".

I guess I didn't mention yet: my brother got me a Sega Genesis Mini this past Christmas - though the only game I made time to play fully so far is Mega Man: The Wily Wars.  It was fun but I used it in this d-bal review (https://www.rippednatural.com/d-bal-review/) because I thought it will make it easier to understand the benefits of this bulking and bodybuilding supplement. I didn't think the three new Robot Masters were super great - but I guess they still have a legacy, because I more recently bought Sonic & Mega Man: Worlds Collide (as well as Worlds Unite, its sequel), a comic series involving Mega Man and Sonic's worlds, obviously, and (though I'm sure they showed up in the Mega Man comics earlier,) I like that the three new Robot Masters are collectively referred to as the "Genesis Unit".

You didn't think that the tree Robot Masters were great, wow I personally think that they are amazing plus the legacy that they have makes it more fun.

I never played Light Crusader and don't knew what is this game about, but I saw that this map would be interesting here (for Genesis Mini map set and for two user requests). However, we can see a review of a game on Youtube. This map include all all rooms and locations from the game (I found it by usind a cheat code and level select menu).

We now have maps of Ecco The Dolphin (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#EccoTheDolphin), thanks to Cleeem and Ecco the Dolphin Online (https://eccothedolphin.online/)!

Also thanks to them we have Ecco: The Tides Of Time (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#EccoTidesOfTime) and Ecco Jr. (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#EccoJr) fully mapped now too!  While they're not included in the Sega Genesis Mini, they are still very welcome here on VGMaps.com!

G.E.R. submitted a number of maps today for various games, including the rest of Contra: Hard Corps (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#ContraHardCorps) and the only "map" of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#DrRobotniksMeanBeanMachine).  I looked it up; apparently the playfield is a dungeon.  Weird.

Yep, at the time I wasn't really good with generating maps from savestates or rom data.  I also made these before video recording was practical and it would have been hard to place everything accurately.

Out of curiosity, why is ToeJam & Earl marked with a dash? Does that mean incomplete? The maps uploaded should be all of the static maps possible in the game. If I remember correctly the randomized world, according to the devs, should actually be randomized and not just a random selection from a bank of possible maps. If that's the case, it's not really possible to make maps of the randomized game. It's has been a while though since I worked on this, and if someone has information otherwise, please let me know.

Haven't updated this list in over a year, but today, zagato blackfirst submitted a number of Genesis maps today for various games, including all of Altered Beast (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#AlteredBeast)!

I'm not supremely familiar with ToeJam & Earl, I suppose I could take a look at some YouTube videos when I get a chance.  If there's a bank of possible maps, then yes, it's mappable.  If it's totally random, then can some examples be shown (like with Dr. Mario (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/index.htm#DrMario))?  Or would those randomized maps just look the same as, or too similar to, any Fixed World maps?

I would love if someone could map Vectorman. If you're crazy and dumb enough to care about 100 percent completion for each level (me), then you need to find all the photons and TVs, and the levels can get a little complicated.
Title: Re: Sega Genesis Mini - full map set
Post by: JonLeung on August 20, 2022, 11:29:11 am

The Genesis Mini 2's release date of October 27, 2022 as well as the full list of games were revealed yesterday.  If you don't want to watch the video, you can also see the full list on the official site (https://sega.jp/genesismini2/#titleList), or the full list including all regions on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Genesis_Mini#Sega_Genesis_Mini_2).

It's advertised as having "over 50 classic titles" but it sure looks like there are 60 games there (actually 61 with Space Harrier), including seven games listed as "BONUS!" on the official page.

The BONUS!es include:
- Devi & Pii (previously unreleased)
- Fantasy Zone (a newly developed port)
- Puyo Puyo Sun (a newly developed port)
- Space Harrier II (though originally a launch title, this version is enhanced, the first game is also included)
- Spatter (a newly developed port)
- Star Mobile (previously unreleased)
- Super Locomotive (a newly developed port)

Besides Genesis games, there are 12 Sega CD games, with Sewer Shark exclusive to North America and Europe, but the Japanese Mega Drive 2 has nine more Mega CD games (or ten? Not sure what the deal is with Romance Of The Three Kingdoms III being listed for both the Mega Drive and the Mega CD), including two Lunar games!

All in all, there are 38 games (39 including Space Harrier) that appear on both the Western and Japanese versions.  The West additionally has 22 exclusives and Japan has 23 exclusives (I guess that means they have one more game), so there is a pool of 83 games (84 including Space Harrier).

I don't know if it would be worth adding them to the list on the front page because I don't know if there's much interest... the first Genesis Mini hasn't been fully mapped yet...

John Brain has mapped out World Of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#WorldOfIllusionStarringMickeyMouseDonaldDuck).

Thanks, John Brain!

Until the Magical Quest games on the Super NES, I remember being envious of the "Illusion" games on Sega platforms.  I don't remember why, it's not like I'm a huge Disney fan.  I mean, I enjoy the classic Disney stuff, sure, but I'm not sure why I would have gotten console envy from that.  Even so, I should actually play the Illusion games one day.

BTW too bad this can't be done - on some levels you can't get 100% photons/TVs without cheats, and Day 6 can't be cleared even with them, because the developers somehow forgot to put a few photons on the stage.

Ah, you're right, John Brain.  You did indeed map Dynamite Headdy (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#DynamiteHeaddy) earlier which was published on the site on May 10.  (Maybe I was so excited for my Japan trip that my own head was exploding with things to process at the time!)  Sorry for not mentioning that.

I see you made a topic about the Sega Genesis games you've mapped and are planning to map (https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/index.php?topic=4067.0).  Looking forward to some Shinobi III: Return Of The Ninja Master!

I'm afraid there are no more of my childhood games on this set, so I'm done with my part. And I have not a slightest idea how to map racing games like Road Rash 2 or Space Harrier 2, so I guess we can only dream on making a complete set. But I was glad to make a contribution here. :)

G.E.R. completes another two games for the Genesis Mini.  This includes the completion of Ghouls 'N Ghosts (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#GhoulsNGhosts) as well as all of Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#StreetFighterIISpecialChampionEdition).

Thanks, G.E.R.!

Coincidentally, these are both games with confusing apostrophes...

For "Ghouls 'N Ghosts", the title screen looks like it lacks a space before the "'N", so maybe it should be "Ghouls'N Ghosts"?  But then instead of "Ghouls (a)N(d) Ghosts", it looks like it would be "Ghouls(i)n(g) Ghosts", which doesn't make sense.  I don't know what "ghoulsing" is.  I know "ghosting", so are goblins doing that?  Because "Ghost'N Goblins", the previous game in the series, looks like "Ghost(i)n(g) Goblins".  And that's not a typo if you're looking at the European version of that game, as "Ghosts'N Goblins" there actually lacks the "s" at the end of "Ghost(s)".

And then "Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition"... why have an apostrophe at all?  I've heard that mark referred to as "dash"... sure doesn't look like a dash to me.  Perhaps it was a way to make it stand out, which makes more sense in an arcade setting, but even so, when there's multiple versions of Street Fighter II, I wonder if it actually makes any real visible difference.  Does the "Champion Edition" text - sorry, the "SPECIAL Champion Edition" text - not stand out enough?  It's also funny timing because I just watched the "Here Comes A New Challenger" documentary about Street Fighter II only a week ago, and one of the Facebook Groups I'm in just this past week had a discussion about the Super NES versions vs. the Genesis versions of the various iterations of Street Fighter II.  Interesting timing.

So now we're at 29 out of 40 done (or 30/40, if ToeJam & Earl really can't be mapped any more).

Why you think that ToeJam & Earl is incomplete?

As mentioned above (https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/index.php?topic=2461.msg22738#msg22738), I understand there are the Fixed World levels and some Random World levels.  I haven't really played the game to understand how it works.  I just wonder if there's a way to represent the Random World levels, like is there a bank of possible levels that are different than the Fixed World levels?  Are there possible pieces that the levels are made of?  Could there be images of numerous examples, just so we have the graphics available (if they are any different than the Fixed World levels), that kind of thing.

I might as well load up the game today and take a look.  If everyone is sure mapping anything of the Random World is worthless or futile, then I will mark it as done.

Well, G.E.R., one thing that definitely isn't in question is that you are really coming through for us!

G.E.R.'s submitted yet another two games for the Genesis Mini, only a day later.  We now have Alisia Dragoon (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#AlisiaDragoon) and Strider (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#Strider)!

Thanks, G.E.R.!

I was honestly surprised that we didn't have maps of Strider, specifically the Genesis one, until now.  But that's remedied.

Now that these platformers are among those with a "complete" status, looks like the only Genesis Mini platformer left is Gunstar Heroes (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#GunstarHeroes)... also a surprising omission.
(This is also in my own personal requests list (https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/index.php?topic=2478.0), along with the GBA's Gunstar Super Heroes (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#GunstarSuperHeroes).)

Another huge update, once again courtesy of G.E.R.!

Today, we now have maps of:
-Gunstar Heroes (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#GunstarHeroes), a cult classic that I had personally requested,
-Super Fantasy Zone (E) (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#SuperFantasyZone), which wasn't originally released in North America so I guess I should put the "(E)" on it,
-Thunder Force III (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#ThunderForceIII), which I'm not sure if I should link Thunder Spirits (Super NES) to, and
-Virtua Fighter 2 (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#VirtuaFighter2), which I'm not sure if it should be called "Virtua Fighter 2 Genesis", but in any case, is not the arcade/Saturn hit with the groundbreaking polygons...

Thanks, G.E.R.!  You've done eight games in half a week!  What a great few days it's been, and we are grateful for you and your hard work!

While we're checking things off, I've decided to mark down ToeJam & Earl (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#ToeJamEarl) as COMPLETE as well, just as you guys have been trying to get me to do.

So we're now up to 36/40, with only four games left to do.  Or 36/42, if we count Darius and Tetris.

I was play Darius and Tetris on Gens emulator.
Darius comprises 26 non-platformed linear levels and I ripped them like Thunder Force III.
Tetris is specific game and I found only 4 images that can be ripped - a foreground frame (main play area) and various backgrounds. I don't shure that it is informative and usefull but I ripped it too for for completeness SGM map set.

Indeed, G.E.R., your maps for Darius (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#Darius) and Tetris (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#Tetris) are now up.

I don't know why I was originally concerned about these two "bonus games", as the ROMs for both are easily available and playable in Genesis emulators, so they're like any other Genesis game.  Indeed, Tetris is a funny one, as are other puzzle games like it.  Thanks for mapping what you could!

G.E.R., you have mapped/completed ten of the games on this list this week alone!

So now we're at 38/42... could it be possible to get this fully mapped?

Well, all that remains are:
-Eternal Champions - a fighting game, shouldn't be too hard
-Phantasy Star IV: The End Of The Millennium - an RPG - I noticed Dammit 9x started this 15 years ago (!), I'll see if he made any more maps since then, if he has any interest in completing it, or if someone else is willing to do it
-Road Rash II
-Space Harrier II
Those last two have a behind-the-character-as-they-move-forward perspective, so they can't be mapped conventionally.  I feel like there should be some way to get them on the site somehow...

Phantasy Star IV include view-from-above locations and world maps. Dammit 9x ripped only world maps.
I wasn't play it and I don't know what is the game about, but I think all locations can be ripped by using Gens emulator with debug functions and Screenshot Autostitcher.

Road Rash II and Space Harrier II hasn't any "classic" maps and I think that original type is only way to get them.

I got a hold of Dammit 9x, and he says he's submitted everything that he has.  He says,

"I have not done any work of this kind for a long time and I don't expect to continue. Other mappers are free to build on what is available."

So if anyone is interested in mapping Phantasy Star IV - which, as an RPG, I understand is quite an undertaking - at least you don't have to be concerned about anyone calling dibs.

G.E.R.'s submitted full maps of Eternal Champions (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#EternalChampions)!

Since July 30, only eight days ago, G.E.R. has mapped out 10.7 games (10 games on his own, and the remaining five maps of Ghouls 'N Ghosts).  That's literally just over 1/4 of the 42 games, in just barely over a week.  Funny how that's so much progress in such a short amount of time, considering this topic is four years old this month.

G.E.R had actually contributed more earlier, including doing all or most of four other games and contributions on two more.  Thank you for all your hard work!

But, of course, while G.E.R. really came through, especially with this colossal push, he isn't the only one involved in this by far.  This all couldn't have been done without the help of so many other mappers, including John Brain, DarkWolf, George s, TerraEsperZ, xyzbilliu, Dammit 9x, Vorpal86, Anonymous, Tymbrimi, zagato blackfist, Cleeem, ScHlAuChi, Apocalypse612, Grizzly, Geminiman, Stealth, Ultragm2003, Captain Drake, Jester, Spinjump, and WKSchraff.  Thanks again, everybody!

That's not to say we're done, I'm just not sure how soon we will be from here on.

I'm still hoping we can get maps for Phantasy Star IV: The End Of The Millennium.  And that someone comes up with something creative for Road Rash II and Space Harrier II.

Should I add the games from the Japanese and Asian versions of the Genesis Mini?  There are some games on those that weren't originally Japanese or Asian exclusives, like MUSHA, Revenge Of Shinobi, Snow Bros., and Target Earth, so those should probably be on the list too, right?  And of course, we accept maps for games from any region.  (Though I guess I didn't expand the selections on the NES: Classic Edition and Super NES: Classic Edition topics to include the Famicom and Super Famicom counterparts.  Hmmm.)

Then after that, should I consider making the request list for the Genesis Mini 2?  Would there be interest in that?  That has more games and even some Sega CD games.  (Funnily enough, the Genesis Mini 2 also includes Space Harrier II - but a different version...)  Should it be part of this topic thread, or a separate one?

Well, G.E.R., looks like that person is you!

Your maps for Road Rash II (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#RoadRashII) and Space Harrier II (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#SpaceHarrierII) are now up.
I wasn't sure HOW they could be mapped (as in, on a technical level), but they do look like how I expected them to.  Glad they were indeed possible after all!

The only issue is that all the Road Rash II maps - with the exception of the Alaska one - are too big for my browser to view.  Probably just the image area, I'm guessing that anything over 30000 pixels (or probably something binary like 32768 pixels) seems to be problematic.  But they download okay.

Also, the updated Alisia Dragoon (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#AlisiaDragoon) maps you revised with Cleeem's help in this topic (https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/index.php?topic=4081.0) have been uploaded as well.

And now, all that's left to complete the mapping for all of the original Sega Genesis Mini are maps for Phantasy Star (IV): The End Of The Millennium (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#PhantasyStarIVEndOfTheMillennium)...

I think no need for a big size Road Rash II maps, then hasn't any objects.
I compressed it to size 3000px and 100kB - https://disk.yandex.ru/d/ze-qcUDmv5dq7Q may you replace them?

That makes sense; these are much more reasonable.  Thanks again so much!

As someone who exclusively sticks to screenshot maps, I'm glad to see people like G.E.R. take on weird games like Road Rash II and Space Harrer II and actually figuring out a way to map them!

Anybody working on them at the moment?

Not that I am aware of.

I do know there's one mapper I floated the idea past who is interested in possibly eventually doing it, but has 15 other projects they're prioritizing that would come first, so it may not be anytime soon.  If you want to beat them to the punch, you probably could do it... or just call dibs.

G.E.R. has dealt the finishing blow by contributing maps for Phantasy Star (IV): The End Of The Millennium (https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/index.htm#PhantasyStarIVEndOfTheMillennium)!

That is it for the Sega Genesis Mini!  Hooray!

How does it feel to have mapped about 1/3 of the entire Genesis Mini library all on your own, G.E.R.?

We can talk about the Mega Drive Mini or the Sega Genesis Mini 2, perhaps.  Or one of the other ones like the TurboGrafx 16.  And I should update the original post to be like the NES/Super NES: Classic Edition topics and make a front page thumbnail sometime.  I'm swamped with stuff with the moment, but it will be done at some point.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this!
Once more, that includes
G.E.R., John Brain, DarkWolf, George s, TerraEsperZ, xyzbilliu, Dammit 9x, Vorpal86, Anonymous, Tymbrimi, zagato blackfist, Cleeem, ScHlAuChi, Apocalypse612, Grizzly, Geminiman, Stealth, Ultragm2003, Captain Drake, Jester, Spinjump, WKSchraff and Cleeem.
Great work, everybody!
