Movies You've Seen
« on: April 19, 2006, 01:03:20 pm »
Since Inty wants us to be a bit more active, How about talking about the movies we've seen recently? Be it at the theatre, newest DVD releases, or just an old favourite that you decided to watch again.

I've kind of gone on a movie spree the last couple of days; Scary Movie 4, Ice Age 2, Hostel, Canada-Russia '72, The Order, and Resident Evil.

Scary Movie 4: Pretty good comedy spoof on recent scary movies. How they managed to link the different movies was pretty good, and their Brokeback spoof honestly had me bent over laughing. That, and their "japanese". Oh my :)

ICe Age 2: Good for a kids movie. Storyline is predictable though "the Meltdown" kind of says it all. But cute none the less.

Hostel: Messed up, disturbing, definitely not for the faint of heart. Honestly, pay attention to the rating on this one. Despite  being a big horror gore film, it was really well done. What makes it hit so hard I think was the somewhat beleivable situation.

Canada-Russia '72: A good ol' CBC mini-series following the events during the hockey series between the two countries in 1972. Historically acurate (or so says my dad. But considering he had actually seen the games, I'll believe him). The CBC will probably play it agan at  some point, so if you''re a hockey fan, take the time to watch this one; it's a new classic. :)

That's about all I've got for now. It's your turn. Tell us what you've got.

I haven't seen as many movies as I always hope to (being a university graduate with a Film Studies major, you'd think I'd find the time), but this Easter Weekend I saw Rocky (for the second time), Stealth, and XXX: State Of The Union.

Those last two were strictly popcorny.  My dad's insisting I watch Fantastic Four on DVD which he got from the library yesterday (who needs Blockbuster) which I imagine is more of the same.

The last film I saw in the theater was V For Vendetta.  I guess that was pretty good, for an action movie.  Could've used more action, actually.

Man, it's been months since I've seen a movie in a theater, and it was an independant/art film at that. I *could* mention all the DVDs at home that I've yet to see:

-Blues Brothers

-Spinal Tap

-Whisper of the Heart

-Fitzcarraldo

And a few more I can't remember...

My friend and I have been watching a ton of movies lately.  He has the Hollywood video MVP pass, so he gets 3 free rentals pretty much whenever he wants, so just about every weekend and some weeknights we're both up late watching movies.  Some of the recent ones:

The Green Mile

Shawshank Redemption

Wicker Park

a slew of Chuck Norris movies :D

Dodgeball

Cinderella Man

Anchorman

Wedding Crashers

The Specialist

Cliffhanger

The Terminal

Castaway

All 3 Lord of the Rings - Extended Editions

and so on...

As you can see, we are into funny movies, Sylvester Stallone movies, and the occasional dramatic, Oscar-worthy film.

Horror movies is where it's at for me. I get so many weird looks that I'd rather see people die, while all of my guys friends want to see the "sweeter" flicks.

I actually work at a movie store, so I get free rentals whenever I want. The only that that keeps me from watching movies non-stop is school, and life in general.

Oh, where to start. Last movie I saw in the theatre was V for Vendetta, but I've seen plenty of movies on TV/DVD. I've seen 4 or 5 Kurosawa movies in the last couple weeks. He's been promoted to my very exclusive list of favorite directors. I also saw a German expressionist silent movie called "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari." It was very interesting. It's on IMDB's Top 250. Yeah... I doubt any of you care about my old movies....

Welcome back Revned! And about your movies, well I can't say I've ever seen any of them. I don't really know anyone who've knowledgeable in obscure (but high quality) movies with whom I could watch some.

Howdy. Kurosawa isn't obscure. Far from it. He's widely acknowledged as the best Japanese movie director. At least see Seven Samurai. It's on IMDB's Top 10. As for the other one, if you want to see it, you can get it for free off Archive.org.

I took a course all about Kurosawa in my last year of university.

Seven Samurai is one of the big ones.  Rashomon is fairly well-known.

I'm surprised at Revned's grasp of films.  I did, however, see Caligari.

Sounds like a cool class! I've seen thousands of movies. Yes, that ended with an 's'. I'm obsessed with Hitchcock, seen almost every one of his movies. Since I've run out of his films, I've been moving on to other directors. Kurosawa happens to be my director of choice, at the moment. I have yet to see Rashomon, hopefully soon. I like all his films I've seen immensely, but my favorites are Yojimbo and Throne of Blood. The music in the former was really amazing, and the latter was by far the best version of Macbeth I've seen.

All I know about Kurosawa is that he makes "mad films" according to Barenaked Ladies. :P

Well, I already knew that, but I meant obscure in that he's not that mainstream, and his work is hard to find in rental form around here.

Ah, I see. I guess Blockbuster stores in Canada don't have any taste :P Or is it because you're in the French area?
