2,000,000 hits (?)
« on: August 14, 2008, 03:14:07 pm »
I'm pretty sure the counter is broken.

Two days ago I was surprised that the hit count was 1.7 million, when I had previously seen it only approaching 1.2 million.  If it took 6 years for the first million, another half million in any short amount of time was exciting, but I was soon suspicious when I could find no evidence of an actual hit increase.  Any graph of traffic showed things as normal this past week.

So at some point I'll have to find out why the counter's behaviour changed, and see if I can get a new one or fix that one, and just assume that we've had about 1.2 million hits about now, not 2 million, and hopefully be able to start it at that point rather than zero.

Not that anyone cares about hits but me.  :P

Here's something I found interesting.

I ran VGMaps.com through McAfee SiteAdvisor.

http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/vgmaps.com

I saw that digits.com where the web counter comes from is a RED site.

But I don't know if the counting thing is related to the site being red though.  Just thought I'd show you this.

At least VGMaps.com is considered a good site.

SiteAdvisor is pretty lame. Digits.com links to FileHungry.com which hosts some software which includes adware, so that makes digits.com bad by association?

It also says the site is American.  o_0

I guess the host is American, but I'm Canadian, and I'm managing/updating it from within Canadian borders...

I'm pretty sure they only check the host's location. There might even be privacy laws involved between you and your host.

Anyways, what other places can I get free web counters other than digits.com?

Just google 'web counters'.  It gives you a good list of them.

I use sitemeter.com who have been around for years and have reasonable features for me. However, you might want to go with Google Analytics since you're looking to analyse on a slightly larger scale (I can manually check my referrer list every day and not miss anything) even though it's very geared up to websites selling stuff.

I didn't get around to changing the meter but it might have gone back to the old behaviour on its own.

Let's see...it's 6:56 AM my time, 2569852 hits...I'll check in a few minutes and see if we're still getting like 120 per minute like earlier.

If it is "stable" again then we'll just read the counter as 1.25 million less than it says.  :P

EDIT: At 8:13 it's at 2569913.  That means...61 hits in 77 minutes.  I guess it is back to normal after all...
