Metal Storm (NES)
« on: September 11, 2008, 10:49:53 am »
This post is temporarily to call dibs on mapping this game, which I'm already half-way through. I had a hitch for the challenge of mapping a NES game which featured tons upon tons of fake parallax backgrounds (sometimes two levels of it at the same time!) and it's really easy so far. It's just too bad that the game doesn't look anywhere near as good when not in motion.

This project was also greatly facilitated by FCEUX, the new version of the FCE Ultra emulator. It has a ton of features that make NES mapping a lot easier such as changing the overscan color, seeing the tiles and the map in memory, pausing and advancing frame by frame, etc.

Anyway, I'll post what I've done so far tonight (up to and including Stage 4-1).

Imageshack is surprisingly sucky, it's amazing how many images become 404'd after a few months. But with the above extension you can at least drag/drop an image and (after adding the appropriate template) get the forum code generated for you, no matter what the thumbnail filename is.

Do they become 404ed after a while?  I thought they had to be reported or something before being taken down.

Just a few days ago I found an old HTML file on my computer that directly linked to a bunch of ...NSFW... pictures I once uploaded to ImageShack (without an account) and surprisingly, most of them are still viewable there!  o_0  Of course, this was way back in the day when files couldn't be more than 500 kB (or maybe even less), and you could use ImageShack for file storage simply by renaming your file to have a typical image extension like ".JPG".  (ImageShack, or... Images Hack?)

Back on topic (kind of), I remember Metal Storm.  Interesting game.  Though I remember it more because I memorized all the 1991 Nintendo Power covers.  That was my first year of subscription so I remember loving every issue.  Metal Storm was on the cover of March 1991 (volume 22), after StarTropics in February and before Power Blade in April.  :P  (No, I did not just look that up.  I also remember most of 1992.)

Here's an example of what happens with "Imageshack rot":

Spanish magazine scans

I count 10 dead images out of 23 since February this year, and they really aren't anything worth taking down. I've had it happen to my own images that are certainly not in any way porn or copyrighted or whatever.

I always figured that images were randomly deleted after not being accessed for a certain amount of time.

Oh, and thanks for that extension. It will definitely make uploading maps easier :)

They used to say one year without access = deletion. They also said that if you upload them from a registered account, they don't ever go away.

Despite how much I've used it, I've never bothered with registering.  Go figure, eh?

Osrevad said that was the whole problem with me submitting my VGMaps.com Wikipedia article.  Other than the fact that I personally shouldn't have, myself, I mean.  I guess with these kinds of things they screen things a bit less if you're registered, 'cause they figure they can track you down if they don't like what you contribute or upload.

Anyway...whenever I see the word "maelstrom" (a word I only learned at some point after this game), I often think of "Metal Storm".  Or I used to, anyway.

Cool game. I was thinking about mapping it, but I was too lazy. :P If you're including the enemies, I'd recommend that you include the normal and expert modes in separate maps.

Also, I find the sheer amount of CHR-ROM this game has hilarious. Quite literally, about ~256kB (66%) of the game data consists of graphics even though it's only 7 stages long.

Enemies are included, and I'd already decided to do both Normal and Expert modes.

After actually playing Expert mode, I think I'll finish the Normal one and put the rest off for later. *Way* too many enemies coming at you every which way, which wouldn't be too hard, except for Stage 4.

Anyway, Normal mode is nearly finished, with only Stage 4-2 left to do.

Finally finished! Only the Normal Mode so far, but I *might* do the Expert Mode if time allows me to.

[LINKS REMOVED]

Already submitted to the site, and as always, no thumbnails thanks to the stupid ImageShack.

*EDIT 27/04/12*

I needed space in my free ImageShack account, so I've decided to remove the maps from this post. You can find them on VGMaps here.
