Mega Man III was on the cover and reviewed in the first issue of Nintendo Power I got (Vol. 20, Jan. 1991, because it came with a free copy of Dragon Warrior, sweet!), and it's my favourite Mega Man game.  I find it funny that it's the Nintendo Power you looked at so often, too, Terra.  Apparently it might be one of Revned's favourite Mega Man games as well, since it's one of the ones he did best in and the first he remapped, and I think the first he Mega Man game he even fully mapped, if memory serves (also note it was the first to be honoured as MotM).

Yet everywhere else on the Internet, people seem to prefer Mega Man II better.  Indeed, it is really good too, and classic, and so very well-known (that was the first one I played, long before I played the first one).

I weep for Maxim, whose life experiences are deprived of true Mega Man action.  :P

Though I do have to get over the fact that all the games I deem fundamental to play can't be expected to have been played by everyone who's a gamer.  I've had so much difficulty convincing people that pre-VII Final Fantasy games or pre-Solid Metal Gear games even exist to "fans" of those series.  >_<  I imagine it'd be daunting to recommend Mega Man to someone who's never gotten into it, especially if they get turned off by all the various incarnations and spin-off series.

If you stick to the main series (including Mega Man & Bass), there's "only" ten.  :P  I think some of those are redundant though, so I'd recommend Mega Man II and III at the bare minimum.  >_>

III was the only one I ever had back in the day. Snake Man was also the only stage I could ever beat, but I never grew tired of it.

II is innovative and all, but the stages are still a bit empty feeling to me. They just weren't as detailed as the following games.

Now that Sporcle is open to user submissions, a load of quizzes have been added for Mega Man X Mavericks.  I have tested all of them, and the following one seems to be the most complete:

Can you name the Mega Man X Mavericks in 10 minutes?

It accepts both English and Japanese names for all of the bosses.  (Except for one Mega Man X6 boss.)  My time was 3:58 remaining.  Anyone care to challenge?  I got hung up a little on the weird post-X4 names.

I collected pictures of all of these Mavericks at one point, so I have some familiarity with all of them despite never having played X 7.

These were my results.  39/64.

I could visualize a whole bunch of them that I just couldn't remember the name of.  I did pretty well in X 5 because it was the first time the names got all weird so they were memorable in that sense, but X 6 - X 8, graaagh.  The guy from X 7 whose name ends with -or I knew but kept spelling it as -er.  The earth-based guy in X 8 I forgot the second half of the first part of his name and got frustrated about that.  The ones I modified the sprites for the April Fool's joke a few years back, I felt particularly dumb for forgetting.

One of these days I will get around to playing X 7, though maybe it's not that high of a priority, sad to say, if it's really worse than the already not-that-hot X 6 and X 8...  Even if it was a joke, they really should consider making X 9 as a Super NES-like WiiWare game (you know, like how they made Mega Man 9 a NES-like WiiWare game).

The X series is when the Robot Mast..., sorry, Mavericks, got overly complicated designs and names. Aside from those from the first game, I can't name a single one, but I've only played up to X3 anyway.
Current project that are on hold because job burnout :
-Drill Dozer (GBA)
-Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis)
-Naya's Quest (PC)
