I thought it was a decent movie.

Mapping Tips/Guides / RE: Emulators for best screenshot muraling
« on: July 14, 2009, 10:45:44 am »
I know FCEUX is the best for the NES.  You can turn off the sprites layer and then take a screen shot.  I use ZSNES for the SNES along with a tool called vSNES. ZSNES lets you toggle the various layers including the sprites.

Gaming / RE: Weird video about video games

I'm sure you could ask the people who are working on the FCEUX project to add a feature to automaticly save each frame as an image.  They helped me out when I asked to be able to customize the BG color when turning of the BG layer so I could more easily capture sprites.  You can contact them through their website: http://www.fceux.com/web/htdocs/

The first few maps I did, I did in the style of Nintendo Map Guides.  Like having your character in every screen shot.  Also back then I had the enemies on the same layer as the background.  Some day I will probably go back and put the enemies on separate layers and get rid of the main character in ever screen.  The problem is I would rather work on mapping a game I have not mapped yet.  But someday I will get to it.  That was smart thinking with the Roman numerals :)

Maps In Progress / RE: Moving objects

I have used the frame advance technique that Terra was talking about to get the starting position for enemies for games I can't find a Freeze Code to use on the enemies.  Also if you find a map editor for a game that sometimes will show the starting point for enemies.  I almost never use the map editor to make the actual map, since they almost never have the correct colors, and there is normally extra stuff in there or glitches in some of the graphics.  However they work great for starting points for enemies.

I agree with TerraEspwerZ.  I enjoy going through the game and finding every little nook and cranny as well as using vSNES to see parts of the game I never saw when just playing the game.  Once the BG map is made, the more tedious part is going back and putting in all the sprites.  Then the labels.  I'm not quite as bad as TerraEsperZ, since I normally just try to find a font as close as possible to the game font in Photoshop and use that.  But adding legends like I did for the Soul Blazer maps on the SNES takes a lot of time and is no where near as fun as creating the BG map.

If your lucky you can find an emulator that has a cheat search, then you could stop the timer.

I also try to put the enemies as close to their starting point as possible.  If there is a code for the game that freezes enemy movement, then that makes it much easier.

I downloaded the emu and game to see what it was all about.  It is like playing SMB on the Atari 2600.

I see why it was forgotten and why it never made it out of Japan.  It is hard to believe that was made after SMB for the NES and not many years before.

What is the NEC PC-8801?

This is kewl, I always knew there was a problem with different NES emulators using different colors, but I never knew why.  I take it the SNES uses RGB so that is not a problem?

132
I have found I like the colors from FCEUX the best.  I stick with that to make all the games I map consistent.

Yea, I think a new and improved page is needed so as not to scare people out of submitting :)

134
I would suggest having the contribute button take you to a page that warns people to only submit maps they have created, and from there have an e-mail link button.  I'm sure some people just check out the maps and then go to submit something with never looking at the forums.

Map Gab / RE: Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES)

If the maps are at the same quality, I would keep the ones with labels as long as they are ascetically pleasing.

On a side note, I do plan on making labeled maps showing all item and enemy locations for Secret of Mana (SD2) at some point in the future.  I'm currently going through a NES mapping phase, but at some point when I go back to mapping SNES games I plan on doing that one.
