Mapping Tips/Guides / Re: Gens KMod modifications for mapping
« on: November 04, 2013, 09:53:03 pm »
Really the only thing I can think of that's missing is a map viewer, e.g. Visual Boy Advance [Tools - Debug - Map Viewer...]

Feedback, a few minor notes. ~ Gens11svn341 ~
- With compressed screenshots you have to open a blank canvas to copy/paste them into. You will lose all colors from secondary screenshots that are not in the original image if you don't.
- Cannot load WWF Raw 32x. (Sits on a blank screen.) [I have the bios required.]
- When I load a save state in Genesis Savestate Viewer the map graphics change to random colors & the sprites black out.

I've got the first 5 levels mapped, I'll probably have the full game finished by Saturday or Sunday at the latest.

Map Requests / Re: Incomplete Genesis Games List
« on: June 28, 2013, 01:05:52 pm »
Yet here on VGMaps, the NES and Super NES have consistently had the most popular pages, and while the amount of Genesis maps we have is nothing to scoff at, it's never quite as close to the Nintendo consoles' amount of maps as I imagine it could be.  There seem to be a lot of Nintendo fans here (not that I've mapped much at all, but I am one of them too), but Sega should get more love.  Perhaps there are technical issues too (whatever features are available in emulators, etc.).  Though I guess it's easy for me to simply talk about it...

I think Aladdin is missing a few maps aswell.

For me personally it's the emulators that hinder genesis mapping. I'm currently using gens_kmod_maxim_003 (which I believe I got from a thread here) & while I hate almost everything about it, I haven't come across another that can change the background color. It's a necessary feature for me as I map everything in layers aswell as ripping multiple sprites for making enemy & item stat charts

I'm pretty sure it was only released as Genesis in North America and that the rest of the world knows it as Mega Drive.

I really thought pSX v1.13 was one of the emulators I tried but apparently not, I compared a screenshot from it with 1 of your maps and they are exactly the same. I probably wouldn't have gone back to it so thanks for suggesting it. Now I just need to test it with Arc The Lad, when I was mapping it I found a backdrop image that comes out all messed up in ePSXe aswell and it's not stitchable with alt+PS either.

Yeah, I was talking about just the colors, that guy has a breathing animation and he's just on a different frame in each image.
mechaskrom, you are too technical for me. I don't really know anything about the bits and codes. Anyway, problem solved but thanks just the same.

Map Requests / Re: Landstalker

I've done a small portion of Landstalker but decided to start over with a different emulator.
I got 1 off of a thread on here that seems to be best for Genesis mapping & spriting but it doesn't work properly with any of my controllers. Though considering I can't find any other Genesis emulator that lets you change the background color I figured I'd go back to it and just use the old keyboard.

It would be awhile before I start over on it. Feel free to tackle it but if you aren't regularly working on it, then I might come back to it in a few months.

Yeah, I am a completionist myself and have only been able to get everything in Alundra once. Getting to the end of the game and finding out you missed a Guilded Falcon in a dream sucks pretty bad.

I haven't put any work into mapping Alundra since the 1st half of last year, & since you've been doing it I haven't really thought much about going back to it.

I stopped mapping it because no matter what emulator and/or graphics plugin I use, my screenshots always come out slightely different than they look in the emulator.

It was great to see Alundra maps when they first came on the site. It'd be great to see the entire world map done if at all possible.

I mapped the overworld for Alundra but never finished editing it. I compressed it with PNGgauntlet but it's still rather large so if you want to see it you've got to tell me a good place to upload it.

First off, If hex is selected I suggest turning it off if you aren't familiar with it. Click the button in the top left under file and select your emulator.

Alright think of each map as a grid, the top left being 0. For your Y position do your 1st scan as an Unknown 2 Bytes scan. Move down and do an Increased Value scan, repeat a few times then move up and do a Decreased Value scan. Repeat as many times as needed to knock your results down as low as you can. You can also move left or right and do an Unchanged Value scan. Eventually you will have your list of results down to a pretty small number (between 1 & 50.) Select your results and copy them to your address list. Lock some of them and try to move up or down, once you have locked the right address you will not be able to move vertically, keep that 1 and delete the rest from your list. For your X position do the same thing but moving right is Increased and left is Decreased, up & down for Unchanged scans. Once you have found your addresses simply change the values and your character will automatically move to that spot.

I've found that some games change the addresses every time I restart the emulator but these are my results using Cheat Engine 6.2 & zsnesw.
These are all 2 Bytes
X - 0072C710
Y - 0072C714

On a side note the passwords in True Lies vary depending on how many lives you have. It was a little tricky to find the address as the value increases by 256 rather than 1 for every life you have.
Lives - 0072CEBE

When I can't find WTW codes I use cheat engine to find the X/Y coordinates for the character & move to the areas normally not accessible.
Here are 'The Slopes' & 'Overseas Highway: Florida Keys'. With the lack of static enemies & no civilians whatsoever there wasn't much for me to do with them.

First off I need to know what all you are adding into your maps (Items, enemies, civilians) so I can keep The Slopes consistent with the rest of your maps.
Overseas Highway: Florida Keys loops 4 different ways. The first loops a few times then goes to the second which will loop until time runs out or until you destroy a number of vehicles (not sure how many or which ones) then the third seems to loop until you get down to the final truck carrying a warhead and then the 4th starts to loop. I'm really not sure what to do with this, anyone have a suggestion?

I had this on my someday I'll get to it list & I hate to see a game go incomplete so I mapped "The Slopes" I haven't seen the other 1 yet so I'm not positive if I'll be able to map it or not. Here's a list of the Mission names taken from the game manual.
01. "The Chateau"
02. "The Slopes"
03. "The Mall"
04. "The Park"
05. "Subway"
06. "Dock"
07. "China: The Forbidden City"
08. "The Refinery
09. "Overseas Highway: Florida Keys"
10. "Office Party"

Maps In Progress / Re: Shadowrun (SNES)

I started mapping this game sometime last year with a WTW code. Once you get outside of the normal bounds there are a few tiles but ultimately the game is incomplete in some areas, I guess they figured nobody will ever see it so why bother. (The only other game I have come across that does this is "Juka And The Monophonic Menace" for the GBA.) I started to custom fill the areas with tiles from the game but it was kind of a lot of work & I ended up quitting after 3 maps.
