VGMaps Social Board / RE: Transformers Movie discussion
« on: May 25, 2006, 06:29:52 pm »
Oh man, I've just seen painted pictures for some upcoming Classic Transformers who were leaked from the Transformers Club's website to the net. Well, I'm excited about them, though I expect that most here won't be.

Anyway JonLeung, if you want to give me the ability to post pics and links, *now* would be the best time, since I'd really like to make this a visual post you know ;)

Apparantly, Volkswagen wants nothing to do with anything war related, which is why Bumblebee never had an Alternator made, despite a complete working design existing for him (shown in a japanese book about the Binaltech line). Like many German institution, they seek to distance themselves from anything that could bring back the memories of World War II (some NES games like Contra were completely censored because of Germany; that's why for example Contra in Europe is known as Probotector and all humanoids have been changed to robots).

As for alt-modes, the Dreamworks apparently has a deal with GM so expect many of their vehicles being used. And as for Megatron, a jet could be cool; Energon Megatron looked great as a gunship in addition to being a cool G1 Galvatron hommage.

"The Collected Sam & Max: Surfin The Highway" is 167 pages long, and there's quite a demand for it which is why it's so expensive.

Well, I meant good luck getting it at a reasonable price. By the way, I have scans of the whole thing if anyone's interested. However, if Steve Purcell could manage to reprint it like he often says he wants to, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Good luck with the collection. It's been out of print for a while.

Oh yeah, I should mention at this point that all I'm really looking foward to in regards to the movie are the new transformation designs and the movie toys.

There's finally a more objective review of the script online at the following link:

http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-live-action-movie-2007-script-review.php

And frankly, this is about exactly what I was expecting from a live-action movie. Not entirely what I would *prefer* had I control of the project, but I'm not disappointed by a real re-imagining like this.

Well, that's what the Social board is for. Plus, it's not like the forum is all that active right now, so the fear of having countless strangers reading details from your personal life isn't really justified. But more importantly, we know you, and you know us. If you need help or just some moral support, this is as good as any a place to do it.

I'll add a bit of Trek wisdom...

"Let me help." A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He'll recommend those three words even over "I love you."

... Kirk, "The City on the Edge of Forever," stardate unknown..

My voice is too deep for my taste. Everytime I hear myself on an answering machine, I sound like I have the most boring voice ever, like a male Daria or something.

I'm really looking foward to the new series of game. Apparently, you'll either need some type of online subscription to play all the episodes or wait for them to put out a CD/DVD(?) which will have the entire "season" on it.

Also, just for fun, I wonder what's everyone's favourite set of voices for Sam & Max. Is it those from the first Lucasarts game, those of the Fox cartoon series, or the voices heard in the trailer for the upcoming game/episodes?

Me, as I discovered the duo with the Fox toon, they became the best voice to me, even though both other sets work fine too.

Incidently, without wanting to throw the discussion off-course too much, if anyone ever wants to play any of the original Build games (Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior) in Windows XP, you can find all the instructions I was talking about at the following link:

http://buildxp.deathmask.net/

I just did the whole thing for Blood and it works perfectly. Now I can set retarded people on fire and hear them scream "there's no place like home!"  as I could before :)

(Told you the game's humor was twisted!)

I don't remember if I talked about here on the old board, but after seeing the old Willy Wonka movie, I decided that the only good thing about it was Gene Wilder. The rest, the music, the other actors, the special effects, etc., were almost unbearable and made me cringe from beginning to end. Only Gene Wilder made a great impression and Johnny Depp's Wonka just doesn't hold a candle to his interpretation (and the cool dialog the writers gave him too).

"Portrait" remains my favourite album of his, if only because it's more demented and funny/creepy in an evil carnival sort of way than his other albums. "Smells Like Children" also carries some of that tone even though a lot of songs are just "more is better"-type remixes and/or plain weird speech bits like "Fuck Franky".

As for Blood, it used the old Duke Nukem 3D / Shadow Warrior engine, even though Monolith Software I think pushed it farther than for those two. I really liked the ambiance of the game, with evil cultists, mimes just waiting to be fragged and lots of cool and/or hommage levels like a moving train and one in Crystal Lakes where a mask on the walls is making the classic sounds you hear in Friday the 13th movies.

The only catch is that sounds doesn't really work well at all in DOSBox, being all choppy. There's a site somewhere which ga ve a very long and detailled procedure to patch the executables to get working sound in Windows but I haven't tried it yet.
