Hi, I noticed there are some differeneces in enemy names from the Manual and from the ending of the game where it shows the names:

Manual      Game

Bob-Omb      Bob Omb

Hoopster   Hoopstar

???      Subcon (Angel Thing at End?)

Clawgrip   Clawglip

Tryclyde   Triclyde

Does any one know what the correct names are?

The Ultimate Koopa

The correct ones should be:

Bob-omb

Hoopster

Subcon

Clawgrip OR Clawglip is correct

Likewise, Tri or Try is correct

Will

Do these names vary from the USA to the Japanese version games? I think that's why are somewhat different.

JonLeung

I would say "Clawgrip" ("Clawglip" sounds like Engrish, with the R and L confusion).

"Triclyde" is probably in reference to the three heads ("tri" meaning "three", after all), though I may have spelled it "Tryclyde" myself a few times.

I thought this was about the Ostro/Birdo confusion in the manual...though I guess Birdo's appearance in later games clears things up.

snesmaster

Did they mix up Ostro/Birdo?  In both the game and the Manual for SMB2 they have Ostro as the boss that spits out eggs.  Should it be the other way around?  I'm sure you are right about the Clawgrip and Clawglip since the Japanese can't tell the difference between the the sound of an "L" or an "R" in their language.

DarkWolf

Other than the case of mis-translations in-game, I generally have found the the game is more accurate than the manual.

marioman

Yes, Ostro and Birdo are mixed up in both the manual and the credits.

snesmaster

Thanks for all your help everyone, I'm capturing sprites from that game and I want to give them the proper names.

The Ultimate Koopa

Ostros are those ostriches that shy guys ride on, aren't they/

marioman

Nope, they are Birdos according to the manual/game.

snesmaster

Does Birdo or Ostro show up in any games other then SMB2 and Doki Doki Panic?

marioman

The pink bird who shoots eggs is in a fairly large number of games (Mario Tennis, Mario RPG, etc.) but it is called Birdo instead of Ostro.

Peardian

I'm fairly certain the ostriches are the ones called Ostro. :P

Personally, I think that they should be, but http://www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.262">have a look at the manual for yourself.  It says that the name of the black ostrich is Birdo and that the pink bird is Ostro.  The credits of the game also say this.  It appears that Nintendo swapped the names in later games though.

Peardian

It was a mistake, and Nintendo has corrected it already in later games. The manual was probably made from looking at the already-erroneous credits translation.
