Maps In Progress / Coming Soon: Undertale Maps!
« on: Yesterday at 04:55:00 am »
(Seeing this website go nearly a decade without any maps from Undertale fills you with DETERMINATION.)

Truth be told, I was already making these maps and then remembered I used to frequent this website back in the day. I returned to see how this site handled maps from this game and was surprised to see there were none. (But nobody came!) Kind of a pleasant surprise, though, because now I get an opportunity to share my maps with this place! :D

They're still in progress, but I'm putting the finishing touches on Hotland, then they'll be ready to roll. I'll go into more detail about my methodology in a later post, but the gist of it is, I'm using the UndertaleModTool, which has rips of each and every single room in the game. So I'm stitching all those rooms together. However, the rooms are rather imperfect compared to what you see in-game (especially the Hotland ones, what with all their complicated backgrounds and whatnot). So I'm using Paint.net to polish the rooms so they look as close to how they appear in-game as I can get them.

There will be two different varieties of maps I'm doing: labeled maps (the rooms in the mod tool include a lot of interactable elements you can't see in-game, most of which I'm keeping for this variety--which is great as a visual guide to what you can and can't interact with, ideal for those on a second or later playthrough who want to experience everything). These maps include spoilers such as late-game and post-game NPCs, puzzle solutions, etc.

And then I'm doing unlabeled maps (without all the game data labels), which still include items and NPCs, but only ones you would see on a first visit--and no puzzle solutions either. This type will only show what you can actually see in-game and will be as close to spoiler-free as one can get with an Undertale map.

Anyway, I look forward to sharing more in the near future! (Fun fact: These will also be the first ever video game maps I've ever done. :D)

Hey everyone--so first things first, I'm an absolute neophyte at creating maps myself. Even though I've been here a long time, it's always been as a spectator/requester; I've never actually tried to make a map by myself.

So right I have about 40-odd screenshots from an overworld map, and I'm sitting down to put them all together in Paint.net when I realized... I don't have a friggin' clue how to actually do that. I mean, how do I get them to line up pixel perfectly? To do this properly (i.e. by hand) seems like it would take hours and even days of painstaking precision, lining up, moving them just so. Like the world's most obtuse jigsaw puzzle. But that seems horribly inefficient; I feel like I'm probably doing something wrong.

How do you all do it? Do you really sit down and measure things out pixel by pixel and line everything up by hand?

Map Requests / New Super Mario Bros. 2?
« on: September 08, 2013, 08:01:59 am »
I'm wondering, since it's on the 3DS, is it even possible to map this one? I know the original on DS was mapped, and there was talk about mapping the Wii version as well.

I think the main thing I'm interested in are maps for all the DLC coin packs, to see where all the secrets in those stages are. :)

Gaming / Very Touching Zelda Comic
« on: January 18, 2013, 07:41:39 pm »
It may be a Deviantart fan comic, but this gave me chills:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

I especially like how the art style is somewhat reminiscent of the official art of the first NES Zelda game (i.e. the instruction manual).

EDIT:
Fixed the links. >_<

Gaming / R.I.P. Nintendo Power (1988-2012)
« on: August 25, 2012, 11:48:48 am »
As Jon alluded to in an earlier post, this week we were met with the news of Nintendo Power's impending demise. And since the entire premise of this website has the old magazine and the maps therein as its inspiration, I think this is pretty big news for all of us VGMaps.com goers.

I suppose I sort of have mixed feelings on the announcement myself. For one, I'm surprised it hasn't happened much sooner. In the era of GameFAQs, VGMaps, and online walkthroughs, it's actually rather impressive that NP has survived all the way to 2012. As superfluous as the magazine has become in recent years, it's almost held on more out of tradition and sentiment than anything else.

But it's very sad. Having been born in 1980 myself, I'm old enough to have experienced NP from its inception all the way on. I wasn't a subscriber in the beginning, though. I ended up using my weekly allowance to start a subscription in 1991 (maybe 1990?) and not only got the monthly issues, but back then NP had a really neat back issue order program too, so I started collecting backward too. I don't recall if I collected all the way back to Volume 1 from July/August 1988 or not, but I wasn't far off, I know that.

My best NP memories are from 1992, the entire year. For that year (when the Super NES was still brand new), NP ran a comic strip story based on both Super Mario World and A Link to the Past in all twelve issues. I got so into it that I would literally wait out by my mailbox in the desperate hope that the mailman was bringing that month's issue of Nintendo Power that day. I think because of this, even now there's this subconscious part of my brain that gets really excited whenever I see a mail truck, even today (despite the fact that nowadays the mail brings me bills more often than anything else!). Back then, I would go so far as to ask the mailman if he was sure that was everything for our house if the day's mail didn't include my NP issue.

I also really loved the Super Metroid comics they later ran, even though it didn't go a whole year as the Mario and Zelda ones did.

Anyway, at some point we ended up cancelling my subscription to Nintendo Power, either when I was in eighth or possibly ninth grade. So perhaps 1994 or (at the latest) 1995? Once I entered high school, my video game interest seemed to dwindle down to nothing. (I think Yoshi's Island, released my ninth grade year, was the last game I played for a very long time.) Sadly, I not only cancelled the subscription, but even later, having believed myself to have outgrown video games, I threw out all my NP issues. =/

Yes, I still rather regret that decision to this day. But I was a very erstwhile teenager, what can I say?

Oh, and I had collected a veritable library of those early Nintendo player's guides too. NES Atlas, Mario Mania, A Link to the Past, Super Metroid. In some ways, those were even better than the regular issues!

Anyway, even when I became addicted to gaming again in 2006, I never renewed my subscription--it was a bit pointless by then of course, due to the aforementioned GameFAQs. I still even now collect the occasional strategy guide (Prima nowadays, since NP let go of those in 2007).

Out of little more than sentiment, I have been keeping up with NP, occasionally thumbing through an issue when I see one in the stores. I'm also very keen on looking online to see what the cover for the next issue will look like. Hell, one day I put together a document listing the covers of all 200+ issues, from 1988 to the present! It's been interesting watching the progression from those old vintage clay model covers to the schnazzy computer art of today.

But now there will definitely be an end. Volume 285 will be the last issue, December 2012. So I suppose the Mayans were right after all--except they weren't counting down to the end of the world, just the end of Nintendo Power magazine. :P

Map Requests / The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords
« on: October 01, 2011, 12:03:05 pm »
With the recent release this past week of Four Swords Anniversary Edition, I figured now might be a good time to request maps of the multiplayer game, Four Swords for GBA. The challenge with that of course is that the maps are randomized for all four of the main stages: Sea of Trees, Talus Cave, Death Mountain, and Vaati's Palace. I guess one could make maps of all the main boards, then of the various central areas (which change every time). The Chambers of Insight are set, so that would be easy.

Then for the DSi/3DS version, there's also Realm of Memories and Hero's Trial. From what I've heard, those are thankfully all set and not randomized, much more like Chambers of Insight.

Map Requests / Metroid Prime Pinball
« on: June 22, 2011, 08:43:21 pm »
Here's a fairly simple request for a Nintendo DS game: Metroid Prime Pinball. I have no mapping experience myself, but it seems like it should be easy enough for anyone with any DS mapping skills. The entire game consists of only 7 tables, 5 of which are only 2 screens large (the other two being 4 screens large when you factor in the Wall Jump segments of the first two tables).

So the maps would go like this:
- Pirate Frigate (+ Wall Jump section)
- Tallon Overworld (+ Wall Jump section)
- Phendrana Drifts
- Phazon Mines
- Artifact Temple
- Impact Crater
- Magmoor Caverns (multiplayer only)

Examples for how the tables might be laid out can be found here (not that I'm advocating anyone copying these maps of course)--see the bottom of the page:

Message Board Help / Formatting a list
« on: April 09, 2011, 05:41:03 pm »
See here: https://www.vgmaps.com/forums/index.php?topic=862.msg13640#msg13640

How do I get rid of that one lone bullet at the top of the list? I want either all the items to be bulleted or none of them (but still indented as it is now)--preferably all bullets. I kept fiddling around with the board codes, but everything I ended up with looked even worse than how it is now.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Map Requests / Ice Climber
« on: May 24, 2008, 02:26:28 pm »
Even though I've never been a Smash Bros. fan previously, now Brawl is getting me hooked on it. It's also gotten me thinking about old games that are represented in the game. And I'm surprised there's no Ice Climber maps here yet (unless I'm just completely blind or something).

Is anyone thinking about taking that one on? Since it's an NES title, it seems like it would be a pretty simple one to do (for those who know how to map, that is).

This isn't any major request or anything. More of a curiosity thing. =0)

Message Board Help / HELP!!
« on: May 16, 2008, 12:38:38 pm »
I have no idea why, but there is one map on this site that absolutely won't show for me. It's the Labrynna overworld present map for Oracle of Ages--instead of the map, it shows me that hotlinking message or whatever it is.

This is very strange because all over Oracle of Ages maps are working fine, and even the map in question was working fine too just yesterday (maybe even this morning too). Only now is it alone acting up.

Normally I wouldn't make such a bother, but I'm writing up content for Zelda Universe (due tomorrow), and that map would really come in handy...
