Life seems so fragile sometimes; it takes so much to live a happy life, and so little to utterly destroy it...

Last weekend, while reading the newspaper, I read a little footnote describing a car accident near my hometown. I didn't actually pay much attention (as usual for such articles), since the chances of people I know being involved in it are very low.

Two days later, I received a call from my father. He told me that a good family friend of ours was involved in a serious accident, and had fallen in a coma. It took me about 2 seconds to make a connection with the article I had read. He didn't have any other news at that time, and promised to stay in touch.

When the phone rang a few hours later, I had a bad feeling before answering. It was my mom, calling to tell me that our friend, and more importantly her *close* friend, had died from severe head trauma. We talked a bit about it and then she hang up to go to bed, still crying.

I'm still in shock. On one hand, I wasn't that close to her, since I live an hour away from my parents and thus I didn't get to see her much during my infrequent visits. But still, a few years back I and the rest of my family  had more frequent contacts with her and so I guess I should be crying right now, but I can't. It just... seems unreal right now. In fact, it might not totally sink in until I attend the funeral and my hugging brain finally realizes and accepts that yes, she really *is* gone. But it just feels weird right now.

It feels like the premise of a movie; after visiting a friend in the next town, she decided to drive home late at night while it was extremely foggy outside. Of course, she said she'd turn back if it was too hard to see on the road, but like most people do in a situation like this, she kept going, being sure that some fog wasn't going to stop her from coming home. And like a twisted turn of fate, her car crashed somehow, leaving her body practically intact but causing massive head damage.

It all feels unfair really. Back when I was a kid, she along with her kids were good friends of the family (the husband was a total asshole though, even if he was always pleasant with us to save face). Eventually we stopped hearing from her due to the fact that said husband, a local artist with a huge ego, kept treating her like shit, beating her, telling her he would gladly beat her into her grave sooner or later, and cutting herself from all her friends. That, plus he kept living the big life with the local wealthy class with frequent visits to his mistress (my hometown is pretty small, so everybody knew about it) while she stayed at home fully aware of his actions.

It took over twenty years for her to finally manage to ask for a divorce (after getting separated and accepting him back several times), that is enough time for the kids to move out and for her to feel ready to begin a new life single (and even then, it was a huge effort for her considering how emotionally dependent she was). Of course, because of various dealings of his, she was left with hardly any money. He manage to pay her using mostly paintings of his, evaluated to large amounts by expert "friends" but without much resale value for a woman with no connection to the art world. Then she had to find a way to earn a living, which isn't easy when you're a woman in her 50s with an outdated medical assistant diploma with no practical experience in 20 years.

In short, the last few years, she had to spend fighting to get whatever money she could in addition to trying to overcome her emotional dependency issues which, while she had found a nice and loving guy to live with, where still keeping her attached to him even though it was becoming clear that it wasn't working out in the long run between them.

My mom told me tonight that she wasn't really happy at the moment, and I can understand since all she went through made her depressive. It just seems cruel that, while she was working as hard as she could to try and put her life back on tracks, something as stupid and final as a car accident would come in and casually put a stop to all that.

It's hard to see all that makes a person what she is, all the pains, all the dreams, the happiness, the challenges, the memories, everything that she is, just vanish so suddenly. All that is left in the wake are the people who cared about her, of which there were many but in those case there are almost never enough.

I guess I wrote all of this to try and remember who she was, and yet I didn't even talk about that yet. Well then, this is who she was: she was a kind woman, a warm person, a good mother and a trustworthy friend. She was a hard worker and sadly she had much more potential than what she actually had time to exploit.

Farewell Lucette. You'll be sorely missed. May you finally find the peace you were never afforded on this Earth.

Incidentally, I've been feeling kind of down this week because of that, so I won't be posting much for a little while. Hopefully, the service on Saturday should help me with my grief and finally making me realize that she's gone forever so that I can finally cry and express my grief.

VGMaps Social Board / RE: Happy Holiday Season!!!
December 22, 2006, 09:59:36 PM
Well, I'm leaving tomorrow for the holidays and I won't be back until at least January 3rd.

Consequently, I'm wishing everyone here a happy holiday season, whatever it is that you are celebrating this time of year. So, leaving aside all this "politically correct" crap (I was once flamed for wishing an atheist a 'Merry Christmas'), please accept my wishes in the spirit they were intended, and most important of all, have fun and enjoy yourself :) !

If, like me, you are still using Microsoft's poor excuse for an operating system, and your copy isn't exactly, how shall we say... *legal* ...then you're probably having a lot of problems downloading things like service packs and DirectX updates.

Now, a lot of hacks and cheats were found to bypass the validation check over the last few years, ways that are almost corrected/prevented shortly thereafter. I was in this very situation a few days ago, and I found a neat page that features the best way around the check.

Direct links to download the files you need. It's so amazingly simple that it deserves a prize to however thought about it first. So in case you too need some important updates, have fun by going there:

Alright, first let's set the scene:

Right after work, I had trouble crossing a street just in front of where I work. It was dark, and cars kept coming in from both direction. At one point, it looked like the way would be clear for a few seconds so I headed toward the other side, timing myself to cross right after a minivan had passed me.

It turned out that said minivan was carrying a small flatbed trailer *with no lights* so in the dark, I never even saw it. I was expecting to cross the road and instead, my knee smashed into the side of the moving trailer, sending me for a spin or two before crashing on the ground. After the initial shock where I was wondering what the hell I had just run into, I managed to get off the street, and incidentally confirming that I had no obvious bone fractures.

Thankfully, my apartment is 5 minutes away from a hospital and 10 minutes from work, so getting to the emergency room wasn't too had even though my leg did hurt quite a bit. Turns out nothing was broken and I just had a major bruise above my knee. Heck, I didn't even bleed (at least, not above the skin). After receiving a tetanus shot just in case, I was able to walk home with one heck of a battle scar!

The following link explains everything, but here's the short version: in 1969, Jim Henson did an experimental television movie called "The Cube". It deals with a man who suddenly finds himself inside a cubic room he cannot seem to be able to leave, while people of all sorts keep coming in and out through hidden doors and panels; as a result, the man becomes increasingly frustrated and dejected. Anything more would spoil it, but just know that it is a fascinating and very cerebral story, and it's now public domain so you don't have to feel guilty for downloading it ;)

Mapping Tips/Guides / Taking a break from mapping...
November 20, 2006, 07:35:57 PM
I don't know why, but lately it's become increasingly harder to work up any enthusiasm about mapping. Seriously, no matter which of my project I think of, all I can think of are obstacles that are difficult if not impossible to overcome, and it just feels so tiresome and *boring*. My batteries are drained it seems, so I'm taking a break for a while. Hopefully just a few weeks, but maybe more.

Of course, I'll still hang out around here like usual. You're not getting rid of me so easily ;)

Seeing as I won't be home on sunday, I'm making my own birthday thread in advance!

Hitting the big 27 this year, I'll most likely party it out with friends this weekend. Plus, my sister's present is a theater ticket to see "Le Royaume des devins", a puppet theater piece adapted from one of Clive Barker's novel (who also did Hellraiser).

My mom also bought something I had wanted for a long time but always forgot to buy: a water-and-fireproof safe to keep important documents as well as my backup CDs in a safe place in case something happens to my appartment.

As for me, my present to myself was buying all 6 toys from the first wave of the Transformers Classics line: Rodimus, Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Astrotrain, Starscream and Megatron. Needless to say, I was quite glad to see all of them on the shelves tonight :)

I never could stomach any anime series butchered and then shown on Fox Kids or whatever the current name for their Saturday morning block is. However, this series of Yu-Gi-Oh parodies on YouTube made me giggle and even laugh quite a bit. Basically, they've turned each episode into a 4 minutes parody by redoing all the voices and spoofing all the stupid happenings of the real series. The voices are pretty good for something fan-made, and well, it's been a while since I've contributed anything to the social board. Hope it makes some people at least smile Smile

*WARNING, NTO FOR THE FAINT OF HEART*

Short story is, I hate some Tostitos corn chips with salsa yesterday. Not a whole lot, but a reasonable amount. Afterward however, I began feeling bloated and not quite well, signs I both recognized and dreaded. Well things came to head at around 5 pm where nightmares woke me up and forced me to head to the bathroom in a hurry to expel whatever was shredding my insides. Let's just say that vomit and liquid diarrhea were involved in large quantities, and that despite how unpleasant it felt while my body purged itself, I felt *much* better afterward.

Now, my question concerns the fact that this is the second time in two years where I got food poisoning from eating those damn chips with salsa.  I've eaten those on more than two occasions during that time, but it strikes me as odd that I't get sick twice on the same stuff. Is there anything about corn chips and salsa I should know? Anybody?

I used to be a big Star Trek fans, but I lost interest in the more recent series. Still, if you have any memory or interest in it, someone did a great montage set to music as a tribute to the franchise's 40th anniversary. It actually moved me.

Mapping Tips/Guides / How to map with ePSXe?
August 27, 2006, 11:00:36 PM
This is just a big 'what if' for the moment, but assuming I ever got it into my head to map, say, "Castlevania: Symphony Of the Night" by emulating it with ePSXe, how would I go about doing that? Right now, the emulator in question doesn't seem to feature any screenshot command, making capturing rather long and hard.

I also remember that before the board went under, someone said he was using a program that could dump/log any texture loaded with DirectX, allowing him access to them to help mapping. Does anyone remember who did that, or what he was talking about? I'd appreciate any help you guys/gals could give me :)

Here are a couple of maps I did today. Like the title indicates, my goal was to see if maps of this game could be done without too much efforts, which was a valid question seeing as I haven't found any on the net yet. As I suspected, the main obstacles is removing the background since it shares many colors with the foreground.

I might keep mapping this someday but for now, these will stand on their own. I'll probably add a map header for final submission too, just so they at least serve some purpose.

A good friend of mine has been trying to get me to participate in an RPG game he's preparing. Having a pretty big imagination and being quite the nerd, I would have been prime RPG material as a teen were I to have had the right friends.

In any case, he's asked me to try and draw my character, which I was very reluctant to do because of my atrocious drawing skills but after many sketches, I finally managed to somewhat put on paper what the character looks like in my head.

Taking place in the Rifts universe (I know nothing about it except that it's supposed to be a dark futuristic setting at the start of the game, a bit like Blade Runner). My character is a small time arms dealer who sells small guns and ammos on the streets of the underworld, and explosives too if he's lucky to get his hand on any. He's got enough street smarts to never get caught during his illegal activities and is kinda paranoid, which is why he's still alive today considering that he gets his wares by stealing them from armed gangs or other dealers. His goal is to somehow earn enough money to get off the street and go into more legal activites, although how legal those would be and if he even runs a chance of making it this far are up to debate.

He's kinda tall but very skinny which is a bit hidden by the coat he's wearing, and he keeps his hair bleached and in a punkish style to appear more badass which doesn't really fool anyone (but then again, his clients on average aren't that smart so it does the job).

And for the real artists on the board, be tolerant! I'm still struggling with basic anatomy and proportions, so anything advanced like expressive faces, shading and coloring and stuff like backgrounds and composition are wayyyyy out of my league :)

Map Gab / Castlevania: Harmony Of Dissonance (GBA)
August 02, 2006, 10:53:10 PM
I know Zeric claimed this game back on the previous iteration of the board and were he to finish before me, I'd gladly let him have his maps on the site. In the mean time, I've gona back and remapped this game from scratch since my first maps didn't include anything like candles, items and even had the edges of some rooms missing.

Seeing as I have no idea when I'll ever finish these and not wanting anyone to steal my work, you'll have to do with these half-size, color-reduced previews. Note that the red lines make up the grid that I use to align every room in the game, but unfortunately, because of inconsistencies on the part of the map programmers, some horizontal doorways don't align from one room to another (unlike Circle Of The Moon and Aria Of Sorrow).

Okay, so it's late and I've worked 13 hours today, so I'll be brief since my bed is calling to me. I loved this game over a decade ago when I rented it, and I finally got around to map it a little. I've finished two planets this week. Previews for now, hopefully final maps soon.

I've since completed all the maps and they've been linked at the bottom of the thread.

JonLeung, feel free to move this since it didn't really seem to fit any forum in particular.

Anyway, I had a few maps of unknown origin on my hard drive and I thought maybe others had some too that were worth sharing despite not being allowed to be posted on the site without knowing who made them.

<-b>Castlevania 64 & Castlevania: Legacy Of Darkness (for the N64, this map is a hand-drawn map of the castle and surrounding areas done by JorgeFuentes; it's strictly supposed to propose an arrangement for the various levels in the games and is thus aesthetic only. I don't mind as I've always found the design for Castlevania really interesting, especially that final staircase):
